@ but you need to set the bit in the sprite. Maybe the engine can’t do this? I would try pure additive to keep the artwork simple. Maybe there is a bug in the emulator?

@ I mean the color banding. Nebula have smooth gradients. Maybe individual stars are visible. Never do they look like stairs or rice fields. AtariJaguar is a 2D powerhouse. A huge amount of transistors is spent on its sprite engine to have more colors and resolution than the SNES. Do the math: 320x200px -> 64 000 px. 32 bit per pixel: 256 000 bytes << 2 MB RAM. Thanks to the sprites we don’t need a double frame buffer. A 6 MB cartridge can store these backgrounds uncompressed. PNG will compress low noise images by a factor of 3? At least 2. See video mode register in Tom.

@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt The backgrounds alone have more colors than the SNES. They are converted from 24 bit True color to 16 bit CRY, which causes some banding. 24 bit is not really feasable for games on the Jaguar. Read the tech manual for reference.

@ just I feel that it could be better. When converting to CRY, dither could be applied. I don’t know how to persuade Jerry to show 720px. Ah, so the pixel width in the video mode register sets the resolution. 3 bits. Values from 1 to 8. 700 to 175 px . Ah, all the timing in Jerry is for the mainboard designers. There is a remark in the pixel width field where I did not know if this is about Jerry. But turns out, it just says that the vertical deflection rate is not affected by pixel width. We don’t destroy monitors with the mode register . Maybe 720px are possible with overscan on some monitors?

I grew up on atari 2600 and NES but it's baffling to see people defend Defender. I love shooters and I love Kaboom for Atari 2600 which has similar frenetic horizontal defensive gameplay, yet Defender always fell flat for me. Would rather take Missile Command or like I mentioned before, Kaboom!

I haven't played it in years so I'll have to play it again to see what you're talking about. I just remember having a really great time with it and I'll put it above all other versions because it's a 4player game with the teamtap. I don't use emulation so mine plays as intended.

@@TeeroyHammermill play it again and take note to how many times u lose. There’s plenty of footage online of people who played on real hardware and 90% of them lose every match against the cpu. They would have to set the difficulty to the easiest and still lose. I played through the entire game and it’s atrocious. There’s another user who did a challenge by beating the game on a real jag too and he rage quit so many times. Matter of fact, have u beat the game? If not then take up the challenge to see if u can play 3 consecutive games and you’ll begin to see how flawed and how badly it plays And if u want a real challenge try playing it on the hardest difficulty. It’s the most absurd broken ish ever It’s nearly impossible to block jump shots in this game. Why have a jumping block animation if it doesn’t work?
