I hate the dublin accent of the singer of fountaines dc sounds like dustin the turkey 1 of the most overated bands and a awful accent
Bug is the best, starburster second IMO
Thanks for the review!
Great song, great album. I was the only person in the world who didnt get Skinty Fia. The new stuff is in a completely different direction again, but i love it
Totally, I think Skinty Fia could be seen as a transitional album for the band in future? Like a blueprint but not the finished idea?
I loved the Fontaine"s DC from the get-go, I'm an old punk rocker and their sound was pretty much post punk but they've kept progressing over the years, this song is something else, it's kind of way out there, I'm not a rap guy and I absolutely love this song. After seeing them live in San Diego in September I was absolutely blown away by their live performance, this is a must see band, they are amazing live. The new album is also amazing, it has so many elements from so many influences, some of it reminds me of old Depeche Mode/Cure then it heads off in another direction, it's fantastic and unpredictable.
Nice one. I found the pod thru this review. I'm surprised by the lack of noise around this album. There is a real buzz about Gurriers as a live band, which hasn't quite crystallized yet in the recording metrics. I wonder if it's partly due to their independence, which I admire. Another ballsy move. Or maybe it's just the fact they've dropped it relatively early in their lifecycle like you say. A couple of things you picked up on that made the album stand out for me. Firstly, this album makes me want to dance. From start to end. No matter where I am at the time. Secondly, the calmer moments like "Prayers" were completely unexpected. They show a sense of self awareness you normally see later in a band's development. (Also, "Interlude" forces the listener to consider the album as a whole.) Gurriers have made a few ballsy moves. I really hope it works out for them, as they also seem like nice guys from the very brief encounters I've had with them. I honestly think people will look at this as a seminal album in years to come. Even if it's just in relative terms.
Yes! Totally get your point about the album making you want to dance! Which is so important for bands starting off, the ability to make audiences move! Also, they were smart to include moments of calm to make the louder moments more impactful. Definitely agree on the buzz around them and I think they have what it takes to capitalise on it! Thank you for your in depth comment!
Great choice, Fontaines DC best band on the planet currently..
Honestly I was also thinking of Favourite as one of my songs of 2024 too, such a great track
You have to go see them live, best show I've seen in years (and I go to a lot of shows)
I‘m obsessed with this song, so it wasn’t surprising it was my number one song of the year. Just perfect
Such a great and unique track, and the amount of people I’ve heard saying it’s their top song of the year really captures this!
Romance is album of the year. In the Modern World is my stand out track.

@@maryburke5423 Merry Xmas to you too!
It’s a wonderful album. Heavy cynicism, wry wit, and gorgeous sounds. It’s great that you liken FJM to Lana Del Rey. You probably know this, but they are great friends, and have written together for years. I love FJM’s acting in Lana’s video, Freak. If you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend Lana’s cover of Buddy’s Rendezvous.
Right off the bat, this dude needs to clean his face.
The best xmas song ever!!

FD is always watch every time
Such a huge fan of his work, have binged watched so many of his essays
I am also a big FJM-fan and like the album. However it gives me a hard time to LOVE it, and this is strangely because of its instrumentation! You used the term "kitchen sink-melodrama" and I totally agree! I would also add the term "wall of sound taken to the maximum". What to say: Yes, the Scott Walker of the late 60s would love it and the instrumentation is immaculate, but it is somehow "too much" for me." "Time makes a fool of us all" and "Mahashmashana" is also a little bit repetitive, whereas "She cleans up" sounds refreshing. It is also a pity that he did not put "God´s favourite trash" on the album. This is an amazing. Well, overall I have to say: It´s a little bit like "Sergent Pepper" by the Beatles. You hardly dare to critizise is because it so ambitious and well produced, but it gives you a hard time to love it. Just my humble opinion.
Love this comment, albums that are great but don’t make it easy on the listener is such a great topic! I always feel this way about Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
@@TheLastMixedTapeIRL Maybe there is a "secret science" about "how to plot an album emotionally right" and this is a problem for me..F.e Mahasmasha would be a perfect closing track to the album, but the lines "Yes, it is, yes it is, yes it is" at the end of the FIRST song are too much for the beginning. Well, let´s see what they will say about the album 5 years from now. I prefered "Cloe" - it was more versatile and not that polished and bombastic ("Q4" and "Funny Girl" were, but as they were rather the exception I loved them).
@MarcusCzamay very fair criticisms! I loved the album and loved the over the top instrumentation and wall of sound. I was captivated by the gorgeous strings. I do think the title track would have been better as a closer but if not a closer, I really like it as an opener. Right now, this album and the Lemon Twigs album are fighting for the #1 spot for my 2024 AOTY!
It is totally comprehensible what you are talking about. I just have to admit, it's (almost) never too much sugar on the Father John Misty-Cake. Mahashmashana is fabulous!

It’s interesting that you don’t like The Emptiness Machine. For the long time fans, TEM is one of their favorites. It’s usually Heavy is the Crown or TEM as #1 and #2. This album is definitely a re-introduction of the band to the fans. Not only because of the death of Chester, but also the 7 year gap since their last album. As a result, they really seemed to play it safe so fans would have that tie to the past. I’m really looking forward to the next album. I’m hoping that is where they take more risks and go with songs that take better advantage of Emily’s voice and style. The controversy around Emily is mostly a nothing burger and, tbh, is something LP fans are used to. Starting with their 3rd album, Minutes to Midnight, LP started to move away from nu metal and it became common for people to claim the new album wasn’t LP. So much so that it is kinda a running joke among LP fans. The issues with Emily are more of a way for people to justify why they don’t like the band continuing on without Chester and/or that they picked a female singer over a make singer that sounded like Chester.
Thats interesting, I think Heavy is the Crown most emulates the version of Linkin Park I first got into, I like that even though TEM doesn’t speak to me it does speak to fans who’ve been on the journey all the way!
Very interesting analysis. I think because you weren't familiar with their later stuff tracks like overflow, good things go, and likely cut the bridge made no impression on you. Which is very much stuff they did later on. This album is a snapshot of different eras while also pushing new sounds which they always do on every album. One thing I have noticed there is a lighter tonality with the new version of Linkin park because Chester truly let out a somber tone or level of despair. While Emily does more fury or rocker energy to her songs. I feel like a lot of the fans or at least the people who have been sticking with them for every release are celebrating this music because it's kinda like a celebration of all that came before, but the energy IS different by design. I feel like they don't want to play that level of despairity in the music anymore because those other songs will always exist. Good video 👌
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! It’s so interesting to get a fan’s perspective, I think the idea of the album having an album that overarches what came before is an added layer I didn’t get as someone from the outside looking in. It’s also interesting that it would be an added item of celebration for those in the know! Thank you for your awesome comment

3:53 having a chuckle at yr Gilla Band impression Looking forward to spending some time with this album, have had the singles on rotation for a few months along with Chalk, Enola Gay, Cardinals and Dust (Aus).
Haha, glad you liked my Gilla Band audition! Love Chalk and Enola Gay too, gotta check out Dust!
Absolutely this. My article in Blitzed Magazine for November is about the Gallagher's working class pub music. Their first album was a breath of fresh air in the early 90s as producers were ruling the roost.(I was in my late twenties- a working class guy who had just went to uni amongst middle class people who had NO idea of our experiences). I'm not a huge lover of their music nowadays, but it says more to me than Blur or Fat Boy Slim. My only criticism is their apolitical (verging on to right wing) anti intellectualism. We aren't all like that. The pogues, pulp, even the sex Pistols were definately more cerebral. But much of the immediacy of working class life is not cerebral.. it is immediate, short term because of our shorter lives, shorter free time, our having to scramble for every pound. Great podcast as always 👍🏼

"Don't be a dick." Great advice for all areas of life. 😊As a long-time Taylor fan, it goes for people on both sides of it, as you say. If you don't like it, don't listen, love it, and can't understand how others don't? Get a greater level of awareness and understanding for why people don't like it, or simply carry on your day. I guess strong opinions are currency these days. Loved the video, thank you!
Hey! Thank you so much, I’m glad you liked especially from a Taylor fan. “Strong opinions are currency” is such a great line!
id love to see you cover the decmberests new song, joan in the garden!
Awesome! Thanks for the request, I’ll cover it next week!
I'm glad they were that way. It's been so long since I want a more street flavour of rock in the 21st area. The Arctic Monkeys bring that with their first album because it was part of them, and what they were listening too (Roots Manuva for example). I fell in love with trap and other styles of “rap” music, and they had a lot of energy like punks back in the days. I remembered a member of Kasabian saying in 2008 “Rock should definitely look up to rap culture”. Rock music needs to evolve like it did in the 2000's when everyone said that rock was dead.
Huge agree! Love that quote from Kasabian as well! Changing up what rock means is so vital
Great review!
