    Thanks for another great upload! I'd like to ask a couple of questions if you don't mind. I'm curious about how Eng Subbers learn their Japanese and I'm interested in learning too. Assuming Japanese isn't your native language, where have you been learning Japanese? Furthermore, do you have any tips for people who wants to learn conversational Japanese so that they can understand these kind of contents? Thanks in advance!

    • @oveldas
      @oveldas 4 роки тому

      Hi, thanks! My Japanese studies have been somewhat unorganized, honestly. I started by getting some textbooks from the library and learning by myself, then I took some elective language classes at the university, and later I did a foreign exchange in Japan and took kind of "intensive" classes there. (All the while doing at least a little bit of self studies.) There are a few key points: 1, regardless of the format, it's been very long since I first started learning Japanese; 2, I made some Japanese friends and started talking with them early on in the process; and 3, I lived in Japan for a year. I'd like to be able to say I have some great tips, but I'm not coming up with much other than using spaced repetition (there's a free program called Anki) to ensure the vocab you learn stays with you and trying to speak/write it early on (there are free language exchange apps too, I used one before I had the friends). Since you said "conversational," I'd like to make it clear that in my opinion, you can't really skip learning kanji, although I don't know if you had that on your mind in the first place. Kanji support learning vocabulary and help you make connections between words. Sometimes I can understand a new word I hear simply by my brain coming up with the kanji it would be written with-even if I've never seen it written before. I don't really know how people generally learn. Well, I'd assume quite many of us have spent longer periods of time in Japan and have consumed too much anime (which does support learning if you also have proper learning materials!).

      Thank you very much for your elaborate response! That's a damn strong Japanese learning experience you got there. I had been wanting to start learning from textbooks, but I was discouraged to do that because of my watching a youtuber (Japanese who makes videos in English) saying that textbooks is not that good a way to learn conversational Japanese. But after reading your advice not to skip learning kanji, I'm gonna start learning from textbooks to start learning phrases and kanji in one go, supplemented by other kanji memorizing methods such as Anki. Now I regret not taking the Mandarin classes I had in my school years seriously (still don't know why I passed all those classes...), could've at least learnt a number of kanji from there. I'm gonna look up language exchange apps too, but only after I've got basic conversational skills. My experience conversing with my Japanese cousin proved that my Japanese is nowhere near enough to hold a basic conversation exclusively in the language. Had to rely heavily on gestures and riddle-like descriptions to explain something to her lol. BTW your English is very good, I'm sorry if I made errors here and there (English is not my native language). Once again thanks for both your response and your subbing efforts, I'll always appreciate that.

      @@jonabadrajonabadra7891 Sorry to hijack this comment of yours, but if you're an EU citizen I would recommend the Japanese language program from Dalarna University, because it's completely free for EU citizens, all classes are held online and you get a bachelors degree after 3 years (which is equivalent of N2 level Japanese). www.du.se/en/about-du/organisation/subjects/japanese/bachelors-degree---japanese/ You can also take their courses at 50% study pace if you have a full time job, but be aware that this means that you will be able to get the degree after 6 years. You can also just take individual courses, without trying to go for the degree, but you have to finish lower level course in order to apply to the higher ones. They also offer an exchange program during the second year, which means that you can go to Japan and study there. You can also apply there if you're not an EU citizen, but you'll have to pay tuition then. And depending on where you live it would probably be cheaper to take Japanese course at a local university. I really recommend studying with a professional teacher and in a professional environment, because self study is hard (believe me I tried it). There are people who became fluent by self studying of course, but I definitely think that that's the harder way. About "conversational" Japanese and not learning from textbooks, you basically have to start with some basics (basic vocabulary, grammar, etc.) to be able to have a conversation. Textbooks may don't teach you everyday conversational language, but without a strong foundation you won't learn anything. You basically have to know how to read and write a language in order to speak it and construct sentences, especially since you'll learn new vocabulary, expressions and sentence structures from reading books, manga etc. I agree with Ovel, the best thing you can do is immediately learn Hiragana and Katakana, before you learn anything else, please don't rely on romaji because that will just make things more difficult in the long run. After that you can start the first 3 chapters of Genki One (that's the textbook I would recommend), the first kanji are introduced in chapter 3 and you can learn them from there on. You should really learn the kanji together with the vocabulary and how to use them in sentences instead of just learning the kanji on its own. That's another good thing about textbooks, especially genki, pretty much all the kanji you learn are used in the books dialogue. Oh also another advice, because I used to do that in the beginning, DON'T SKIP BETWEEN RESOURCES!!! Stick to one resource (like genki for example) and only supplement it with things like Anki for kanji, but don't use other textbooks, or other methods of learning like apps (looking at you Duolingo), because you will just get confused and won't remember anything in the end. I would recommend the first two Genki books and after that Tobira, there's a small jump in between, but you'll get it pretty quickly, especially if you have a teacher (university or otherwise). I hope my comment was at least a bit helpful and best of luck for your studies!

    Thanks so much for the sub! Very excited to see Amuse VA Channel upload being translated. If you haven't decided the next vid to sub, I would like to recommend Moeka's solo livestream. I watched it live and it's very interesting, most of it was her interacting with live-commenters, doing impersonation requests and answering questions. Also, considering how popular she is, I think the vid's a great way to 'launch' your channel. It's long tho, and I would never expect a subber to sub a solo livestream of an artist they don't like that much (I still don't know your preferences). Other alternatives which are shorter but still very interesting (quite packed with funny moments) are where the 4 of them (moeka, kaori, hinata, yuri) play games. All in all thank you for the hard work!

      Hi, thanks for the comment and the suggestions! I've actually been toying with the idea of translating the word wolf game you mentioned. That's easier length-wise. (I've also considered some videos from other channels.) I know I only uploaded one video so far so it's not like the activity on this channel can go much lower, but I'll just mention that I'm suddenly a bit more busy with other stuff, so I'm going to make no promises on the schedule.
