I went through a similar search for tone. But the amp I found that’s dug it’s way in like a tick that gave me what I wanted- to throw the pedalboard in a drawer and go straight into an amp and sounding fantastic clean, or dirty and everything in between - it ended up being a FSR wine red 1x12 Princeton Reverb. Came with a Jensen P12Q, and solid wood construction. It is the best amp that I’ve ever heard in a room not named Magnatone. Funny story. I then kept searching bcuz of people like the guy you’re talking about- I figured surely pcb must be the devil, right? Well- I’ve now played 3 vintage blackface princeton reverbs, 2 silverface ones, and some assorted vintage fender amps like a blackface deluxe etc. and guess what? None of them come close to my fsr bordeaux 1x12 princeton reverb. So I decided that was my amp. I still keep searching for something better old or new- and the only amp I’ve ever heard or played that definitely beats it is nearly $4k after tax- and that’s the magnatone panoramic stereo 2x10. Maybe someday I’ll get it. But till then- my princeton reverb is the amp of my dreams. It sounds so good with no pedals that it makes me and anyone in the room make stinkfaces. The trick is to use a little reverb and vibrato on everything. It sort of spins the notes around the room in 3d and turns little undertones into a beautiful soup of yum. And the natural overdrive that comes on around 4-5 on the volume knob sounds better than any overdrive pedal I’ve used, and I’ve been thru plenty. I have had 0 issues with the amp for years now. An amp nerd told me a few things that may have helped with longevity- Always keep a speaker load plugged into it when on. When I first turn it on I don’t start immediately cranking it, I let it warm up a tiny bit first. And lastly I don’t turn it off and then right back on. I’ve never had an issue. I keep it on a tilted back amp stand. I try to not use pedals on it with the volume beneath 4

My wife bought me that Sunset Strat after i had a real close call, 5 days in ICU last year. It's become my number one for worship and college ministry. As far as amps, it's the ones that we/ I can't wait to play. Tend to prefer tube or hybrid, modelers just fall apart if there's another guitar with a real amp, but in some cases they're the best option.

180 bucks to fix my fender frontman 212R today. The servicemen said he won't touch any peavey. The parts are hard to get or unit has to be shipped out. I'll stick with older Fender amp til I can find a 77 super reverb. Not ready for a tube amp anyway

I got 3 small amps. Tubes and Solid State. I get any tone out of them I like and this varies. So far I had no issues and am happy. I do not get them fixed, but buy the very same one again. They are such good cheap amps I do not care about anything. And with 71 in your case I would stop chasing tones anyways. It is just a waste of time and takes all the sense out of all you might try. This is just how I see your situation.

I went down a similar rabbit hole when I got back into guitar some years ago. So many more choices now and varying opinions. Started out with the digital stuff (not as heavy, more "features"), including the Boss Katanas, Roland Blues Cube, the Boss Cube Streets, Blackstar Debut 50, a Helix Stomp pedal through a PA, etc., but wasn't satisfied with them (except for home practice). Also bought some tube amps: a Vox AC10, a few Blues Jr.'s eventually and Monoprice's 15-watt tube amp, but returned or sold those. Even bought a higher-end Mesa Boogie Mark 5 amp, but it sounded very boxy. After all that, I realized the best amps I ever had were the simplest tube ones: The Fender Pro Junior IV and Monoprice's 5-watt tube amp. I sold those at the time, but now that I know more and have been in some bands, my new Pro Junior IV (SE model this time, though the tweed one is just as good) has really been impressing me. Relatively light weight (23 lbs), easy to dial in (just 2 knobs), keeps up with a drummer and band easily, has a nice Fender sound, and doesn't sound boxy. They key is to put together a good pedal board for it (even a small one with just an overdrive, boost, and delay or reverb may be all you need). I may buy that 5-watt Monoprice tube amp again, too, and then be done with it. Went down a similar rabbit hole with guitars, too...

Being old (69) I was raised with tube televisions and stereos. My dad fortunately invested in the best they had back in the early 1960's. I've always loved tubes, and in recent decades tube amps, which I've accumulated a few of. Little old tube amps running on a couple 6V6 or EL84 power tubes for the most part, Gibson and Ampeg, but a couple good clones too. A 1964 Deluxe Reverb clone with Weber 12F150, and VOX AC10 (JMI circuit) head through an Avatar version of a Celestion blue (A25) 12" speaker cabinet. Those old Gibson amps have gone way up in value recently, but the Ampeg amps can still be bought at excellent values. Look for an old Mercury, Jet, or Rocket from the golden era, they have some on Reverb last time I looked, under $1K for most of them. Lyle at Psionic recommend the new Vox AC15C (not AC15CC, which is a different version). He doesn't like the AC10C as much, which I understand from the tech perspective, but it sounds great and is light weight, plus you plug it into a larger cab for a bigger sound. It gets the top boost sound to my ears, maybe not a real AC30 but similar. Friedman makes good sounding amps, I've heard good things from most users, not anything bad yet. My latest love is a Marshall JTM-1H, I was dubious but it really does get THAT SOUND, even the 1 watt is too loud at overdrive, for that you hit the .01 watt button on the back (a push-push). Incredible sounds from what appears to be an overpriced (don't ask me what I paid) little piece of tech with few components, but it gets THE SOUND...!

I'm glad i didn't have your luck with amps. My Marshall jcm900 at 15 years old never had any problems and never replaced tubes. Sadly because of financial problems i sold it.

Hello from STL. I'm in the same boat. Looking for that perfect clean Fender sparkly tone. Unfortunalty I don't trust the most recent fenders on the market. (Thank you Psionic Audio) They all seem to cut corners... Expecially for the current exorbiant prices. I was actually looking at the Runt 20 today myself. Ansking myself, am I really going to spend that much for an amp when I primarily a bassplayer. Anyway, glad you like the Runt. I might have to put a few extra pennies asside... Buy once, Cry once!

We never ever had problems with PC boards through the decades until manufacture's began cutting corners and components went cheap cheap cheap ! Leave the Boss Katanas well alone, ( fools gold ) you WILL pay !
