Baby Be Mine (Michael Jackson) synths with FREE Vital synth and TAL-J-8
As a kid I used to listen to Thriller over and over again I was often fascinated by the funny sounds especially on this song. So as a grown up, why not train my ears and try to recreate some of that magic? But as always, there's an extra challenge: as little synths as possible, and if possible, they should be free plugins. I almost managed to do everything just with the free version of Vital, but the funniest sound of all on the chorus needed a good Jupiter-plugin, so I chose my long time favorite TAL J-8 (paid, but affordable).
The rhodes couldn't be synthesized with a simple synth, so I just used Keyscape.
That quacky lead sound on the left was also a pain, couldn't reproduce it as accurately as most other sounds, the original might have been programmed on a Prophet or any other late-70s early-80s synth with hard sync capability.
The original song was written by Rod Temperton and produced by Quincy Jones.
This is a repost, I omitted the iconic drum fill sample from the beginning for copyright reasons, hopefully now the sounds in the video are audible across the globe :)

How to program Baby be mine synth parts with Vital and TAL-J-8
Переглядів 1957 місяців тому
A quick video-reveal of how I programmed the sounds on my Michael Jackson cover. Vital can be downloaded for free at vital.audio and TAL-J-8 is available for a very reasonable price from tal-software.com. Support great indie developers. This is how the synth tracks sounded in their raw form before mixing, so some saturation, compression and reverb were added during the final mixing session. Thi...
Stranger Things theme sounds with one free synth, patches revealed
Переглядів 1738 місяців тому
Last week I published a cover version of Stranger Things theme I made utilizing only one free synthesizer plugin and a handful of free mixing plugins. In this short video you can hear all the main synth sounds individually and see how they were created inside TAL Noisemaker. The reverb you hear on the video is actually TAL-Reverb-4, even though on some patches you can see some reverb added on t...

Stranger Things theme recreated with only one free synth plugin, the great TAL Noisemaker. And mixed with free plugins by Analog Obsession. November is close, and so are the winter discount campaigns full of inviting plugin offers for musicians and producers. One of those times when it's hard to resist the temptation of investing in yet another bundle of synths and effects. I decided to find ou...
Live jam with Softube Modular, Gig Performer and some hardware

Quick and simple synth jam experimenting with Softube Modular and some hardware, routing one Softube module through an analog synth. The whole thing was recorded live with one take directly from Gig Performer, no further mixing or editing. Mastering done with CloudBounce. For "behind the scenes" information and some screenshots of the module rack, check out this Gig Performer community thread: ...

Thanks ! I've been looking everywhere to find this f*ckin' intro riff, cause I didn't manage to find the right notes with the effects applied on the mix. Thanks, you're savin' a part of the tribute show I'm gonna play on keys.

Do you mean a tutorial on how to play it or tutorial for the sound? There is another video on this channel where each Vital and TAL-J-8 sound is revealed one by one, I can also send you the Vital sound.

Hard to tell exactly since I easily lose the track of time when doing hobby projects like this just for fun 😀 I'd estimate something around 5-6 hours designing the sounds and recording the tracks (plus drawing all the automation curves and trying to time them just right). Mixing happened in a different location, propably 2 hours max. Mixing is my weakest point, I'm mainly a keyboardist slowly learning how to mix and I've already learned quite a bit since I posted this video. At around 00:35 when the climatic buildup starts I remember sort of giving up, now that I hear it later I cannot help thinking I propably could've done better there. But life is too short for remaking youtube covers, so I've moved on.

I’m just starting to use TAL noisemaker, this is great stuff - did you use any stock presets/patches?

    • @mikkopatamamusic
      @mikkopatamamusic 6 місяців тому

No presets used here, I wanted to challenge myself so I programmed everything by hand. Also, in many situations when dealing with basic analog-style patches, I find it quicker to program them instead of trying to find a preset that's close enough for me. Of course tweaking presets is always an option, at least with the bass drum sound I'd have saved some time using something found in the preset library.

Yeah, they are too good to be actually free! I recently had the chance to compare FETish and LALA with their real hardware counterparts and the differences where very, very subtle. Ended up removing some of my UAD native plugins (no more iLok hassle).

@@mikkopatamamusic As someone who exclusively uses software, that's awesome to hear! I love his saturation plugins too--Tupre, Tuba, and Konsol are probably my favorites... And my SSD died that had a lot ILok activations, so I hear you about the ILok hassle :P

To be honest, I'm still impressed at how great the Noisemaker can sound considering its age. I'm still frequently using it live and producing when I need basic bread-and-butter sounds with low CPU-hit. I do have loads of paid plugins and even hardware analog synths with prettier GUIs and more "vintage-mojo" in the sound, but for covering the basics Noisemaker is more than enough in many situations. Pair it with some nice saturation plugin and it'll cut through any mix like the best moog-clones out there.
