Riding Through Grief
United Kingdom
Приєднався 12 лип 2021
Can riding motorcycles help me navigate the unbearable journey of loss and grief? - hopefully even help others who’ve suffered the same by showing them it’s ok, not to be ok.
I am a passionate biker, and was a photographer, musician and drone operator. Over the past few years my focus has been on Sarah, and due to the stresses of her illness I let everything else go - but I will eventually get it back. Caring for her, especially in the last few months where it became 24/7, had been the greatest privilege of my life. To have loved so deeply, with such an amazing connection to my wife, best friend and soulmate, makes me a truly lucky man.
She left a list of things we wanted to do, and she wants me to continue - this is her story, this is my journey.
This is dedicated to my Sarah, the love of my life ❤️

Gordon and I decided to head out on the bikes, despite the cold and damp weather. We had a great couple of hours, and cleared our heads in the process.

Charlotte is my closest friend, and someone who has helped me get through this difficult time. She raised money from her store in Sweden, in memory of Sarah. Today, after having a lovely weekend catching up, we headed to the Beatson office to pay the money over. Massive thanks to Charlotte ❤️❤️ @KickisHandarbeten

Nice vid guys. I look forward to meeting you Craig at some point on a clan ride. A smashing route around the Cairngorms led by the lovely Rab. I met Gordon briefly on that Dundee meet. He was very distinctive on his KTM and full leathers !
Thank you for the message. Would be nice to meet up with folk, and get on a clan ride. Maybe one day. Big G likes his KTM, it’s distinctive!!
Proud of ya bro keep up the Counciling
Thanks big lad. See you tonight mate
Hi Craig. This was virtually like listening to myself talking. I'm 2 weeks into my group grief counselling and we're starting to open up as a group. However it was the photograph bit that hit home. Exactly the same happened to me last week. I found a photo I had taken of Sylvia a week before she died and you can see the pain in her face. So I jumped onto her laptop for the first time since she died and found a photo she took of us in the Cairngorms 4 years ago. Just the 2 of us lying on a bed, head & shoulders, 90° from each other. And she looked so happy I just broke down and sobbed. I didn't even know it existed. I showed the family and our son got a canvas print made of it for me. Again, as soon as I opened the package I broke down again. Daft really considering Sylvia looks so happy in it. As you say, these things will come from nowhere and I have the same mindset as you, I will always love and miss her for the rest of my days but she would hate for me to not live my life fully just because she's gone. I've actually been out on my bike more this last fortnight than the previous 6 months. She would definitely appreciate that!
You talk very eloquently mate. Keep going 🙏🏻
So glad the counselling working, have had to deal with sudden death of parents at different times but was different for me and not have problems but respect you looking for and getting help as needed. Keep going and 100% behind you. Love you for your honesty through this. 👍🏍
I am off to the same place next June but going the other way starting from Scone to Loch Katrine then on to Glasgow then Lanark the last leg of a four day moto camping trip I am planning on my Rebel 1100, Lanark to Glen Coe ( the long way) Glen Coe to Foyers and Foyers to Scone taking the scenic routes but planning the alternates in case of really bad weather.
That sounds awesome!!! I can’t wait to get some more camping done 👍
Great video as always. Cant find part 4 with the tent set up though.....
🤔 it should be there, let me have a look 👀
Wow. That was actually a very emotional video for me to watch. Sylvia and I drove up Dukes Pass a few years back and went on one of the boat trips on Loch Katrine. I have photos somewhere. Sylvia would literally travel miles just to go on a boat. This brought back happy memories for me. Thanks Craig.
Cool video. Subscribed
Sorry for your loss Craig. Awsome drone footage. I visit Dunure regularly on my Harley and I've recently purchased a drone and a flight around Dunure is on my list. If my footage is half as good as yours I'll be well chuffed. Take care and ride safe....
Thank you 🙏 Dunure was always a favourite wee spot to visit. Looking forward to seeing your drone footage!!
Another great vid, you do seem to be enjoying life a bit better now. Keep it up my man 🤓
Hi Craig good to see your getting out with your mates ,nothing like a blast on the machine to clear the head . Stay safe my friend, Frankie from OZ.
Great chat and enjoyable, did the pass many times on the cruisers, managed to avoid sliding on the gravel that seems to lie on it all year round however. Well rode there. Cheers !
Hi Craig and Gordon, great to see you guys having a good time. That was a nice demonstration on how to ride through grief, showing that it's ok to not be ok, but it's also ok to be ok, well done to both of you - ok 😁
Nice one Craig - well done - that’s was a fantastic ride out - was only cold when off the bike . I actually felt I was riding the pass all over again - Magic !
it's been grey for weeks it feels like nice ride thanks for taking us along mate loved the patter lol
You were getting along that dukes pass at a fair rate. Thanks for the mentions. Good video mate. You looked as if you were heading for the crow road at one point also a great bike road.
Good to see u back out on bike Craig Loch Katrine run a lot less stressful than your commute mate 👏🏻👏🏻
Love the Trossachs one of my favourite places to go for a wee hike up a hill or a ramble around a forest track.
Hey I miss the Scottish beautiful scenery. Grey or no !! Xx
Gday Craig, dude met u and George through Bruces channel, u bounce off each other brilliantly i was in stitches and tears watchin the three of you open up. I lost both parents to the dreaded C mums passing was the worst like Bruce, however 4 years later i lost my best mate to a dickie heart he didnt do bikes but we did old Mack trucks together , it hit both my wife and i hard 5 yrs on we have days of rememberance , please keep up the great work you do but also look after yourself first. Us blokes are hard nuts to crack but once the world changes we find it hard. Cheers Glenn. PS watchin all the way from Aus.
Thanks Glenn, and so sorry to hear about your mum and your best mate, absolutely tragic 😔 It’s true what you say, some blokes just go about life and harbour all the pain, it’s not easy. Thanks for commenting, and good to have you with us :)
Happy belated birthday Craig. I think that's me finally caught up with all your videos!
Thank you to everyone who donated and thank you of course to Craig for putting me up and putting up with me!
Found the channel through Gordon. Whilst I have not experienced grief through death of my husband but a break down of my marriage. You both are incredible and so very inspiring and let me tell you am more than sure your wife’s will be very very proud of you. Much love and strength to you ❤
Happy belated birthday. Fantastic that your friend Charlotte came over from Sweden to donate, another fab video 😊
👌👌👌👏👏👏
happy birthday that was so great all the way from sweden amazing work.
Happy Birthday and lovely of your friend to donate all the way from Sweden. Excellent vid.
Happy Birthday Craig, very well done Charlotte, a great effort! That was probably the happiest 1.17 sec vlog I have ever viewed 🤣
It was a nice day, with great company :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Craig. Just great to see you and Charlotte too. Xx
Thanks Fiona, hope you’re ok x
I started my counselling walking group a couple of weeks back and have my second session tomorrow. Then i have my first group counselling session on Thursday. I'll let you know how I get on. The difficult part will be returning to the hospice where Sylvia died. She only died at the end of August but I decided that I needed to get counselling very early on.
Good to hear mate, I wish I’d went earlier if I’m being honest. The group sessions are certainly helping me get through things, and understand things. Keep me posted. Feel free to PM me instead of on here for more privacy :)
How do I PM you on UA-cam Craig? I've never done it!
@@col0362 my email is neofire72@gmail.com.
Teied emailing you but that email address comes up as invalid@RidingThroughGrief
Ignore that!
Brown leaves - scourge of the autumn biker. I've also done exactly the same - got somewhere then immediately left. With me I put it down to not having Sylvia with me to chat with. Being alone gives me too much time to overthink things even if I'm just having a coffee.
Until i watched this i was ignoring that knotted feeling in my stomach that i get most mornings but you're right Craig, i need to pin my GP down to a proper assessment appointment. My issue is i get fobbed off by the receptionist and get told it's at least a month until the next available appointment. Absolute joke. Meanwhile i have stumbled across a great biker cafe over the water in Fife which i have started to frequent and the warm welcome i received helped me a lot. I plan to make frequent visits dependent on the weather!
GP should be giving you priority, disappointing to hear you’re having to wait!!
I couldnt get it into the receptionists head I should get priority. But she was like it just after Sylvia had died. No empathy whatsoever. She actually said a few weeks back that she didnt think that I could even see our doctor if it wasn't for medical reasons. This was when i wanted to discuss the balls ups that were made. It was only after I kicked off that I actually got to see the doctor. Unbelievable @@RidingThroughGrief
You will love the Pyrenees 👍 I went in early October was also my first trip abroad at the age of 60 😮. Like you I went with someone who is a seasoned traveller, which made it so much easier. The roads and views were stunnning and even on the tops of the mountains it was mid 20’s and dry. It won’t be my last trip like that. As most people do I took far too much stuff, but each journey is a learning experience. Talking is important, haven’t watched the podcast yet, but I’m sure it will have helped you and others 👍
That traffic is mental you need to move to the countryside mate 😂
Hate it mate, with a passion lol 😜
Hi there. Looks b...y hairy what you are doing that filtering thing. Well, Tip Top as I call you now, well done x
Getting better every week, look forward to your visits on here. 👍
I hope you're doing well today. That Podcast on Teapot one was incredible. I cannot believe that the 3 of you were openly talking about that which must never be talked about, in case some gentle soul gets upset by a brutal dose of reality. I absolutely identified with everything you talked about, and I felt really good at the end of it, a heartfelt thanks to the 3 of you, and "Eddie" 🤣
I know you want to be busy but it’s good to give it a wee sense check every now and then for fear of drowning in work, live you’re life buddy 👊 You’ve had it shit, great to see you’re getting a little me time, you’ll meet nicest people on the bike deck they ride on the left in europe 😁
Ahh remember that commute and some to Helensburgh from Glasgow and yes hated it too, was just as much fun on a fjr passing all the frustrated car drivers though 😂
Great to hear you and Gordon are doing Norway! It'll give you something to look forward to.😊 I did Norway two years ago and it blew me away, like Scotland on steroids!😂 My advice, don't underestimate how big Norway is. The Nordcap is a bit like John O Groats by that I mean, there's not much there and it's a long way to get there. If I was doing it again I wouldn't bother. The speed limit is low in Norway and the fines are eye watering, so getting around takes time. Definitely visit the lofoten islands and trollstigen. Watch out for Moose, huge things that wander onto the road. When boarding ferries, go to front of queues, it is expected, bikes go on first.😊 Hope you like tunnels, there are hundereds of them some very long. That said you are going to love it and I'm glad you have this in front of you. I've also done the Pyrenees but I'm sure you'll have the best fun with Bruce.😂 Totally agree with your comments on the RT. You can improve the riding position by fitting lowered pegs and importantly, removing the "hero blobs" from the pegs which keeps the standard ground clearance. If you're like me, you'll still scrape them, my hero blobs were well worn anyway. Footrests are plentiful on eBay if you ever wear them out and they spring back as they touch down so safe enough. The lowered pegs do improve the riding position, a bit less cramped. Take care guys!
Morning!! Thanks for all that awesome advice. Having never done it, people like yourself are valuable for advice and tips, so it’s much appreciated. I find the standard high pegs on the RT ok, but big Gordon couldn’t ride it with his 7ft long legs 😜😂 We’ve decided to do the Pyrenees first, but I will get to Norway, it’s got to happen. It will take a while to do everything, working around my job, and other projects, as well as finances of course. Maybe when I get some closure on the legal case, I might be able to move on properly and start planning things in more detail. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and give great advice. Take care :)
The joys of vlogging. I did like the voice over. 😊
Thanks Mark, much appreciated. Yeah nothing more annoying than finding you spend a day and the audio is shit!! The videos improve as time moves forward, there was zero motivation at the start, it took a while and had to really force myself to get out there. Thanks for joining us :)
@ I’m all in pal. Time to binge your content 😌
❤
I’m looking forward to following you tick off Sarah’s wishes 😊
My journey start here with you Craig 😊
Never been abroad on a bike either.
Bloody hell you can filter man
Great chat mukka ❤
Good work mate your keeping busy well apart from work lol nuff said eh?
Hang in there mate, it does get easier, it never goes away but trust me it gets alot easier. I've been there. ❤❤
