    I subscribed. Great content! You’ve got a mininstry with this podcast. Keep posting. Eddie from Atlanta, Ga. 53 year old two stripe white belt. I love this martial art. I’ve learned patience, persistence, and humility. I’ve lost 26 pounds and counting. And, I’ve finally found a community to be a part of since I got out of the Marine Corps.

    I think training in the style you may not compete in CAN benefit you if you are focusing on the principle behind the techniques because all fighting really just comes down to physics and biology . So if there's say a choke you can do using the gi, how can you translate that same choke into your no gi game? Sorry I can't give specifics , my grappling knowledge is pretty basic but this reminds me of training empty hands vs weapons . I may be doing something with a stick or knife that gets me thinking "ok , now do that with just your hands "

    • @OpenMatChronicles
      @OpenMatChronicles 8 днів тому

      For sure.... There are plenty of ways to make what you are doing translate. It's a matter of training with a purpose of you want crossover. I don't think it will be as natural a transition if you don't really pay attention to how it applies in various scenarios

    33:24 while shoyo does provide a 13% increase in skill, few know the origin gives an 18% boost. Bit the bullet and signed up for JJWL next month in Stockton. I'd prefer functional warms ups. When I was teaching on my last trip, the warms ups were repitive drilling of the nights prior techniques to compliment the current night's technique. Meaning that it would flow. On day five the whole warmup would be the entire weeks sequence of techniques that would flow into each other both offense and defense.

    I learned something new. Being unfamiliar with the BJĴ culture, I didn't realize this was happening. Decades ago we used sandbagging as a metaphor (in manufacturing) to describe anyone who retained a job at any point in a multiple step process. That is, building up work disproportionately at a particular station to change worķ-rate perceptions. I never really understood the mindset.

      Go for it! Listen man, understand the risks, but remember that when you stick it out there... You have to be willing to get it cut off. You can't control who shows up, you can't control how they've trained... You just do your best. Get out there and display your love for the art. Be safe, have fun, and learn something.

    Im curious: How does the attacker wearing a coat matter? If someone only trains no gi, wouldn't they just as easily dismantle an un trained attacker no matter what he is wearing? On the flip side, if someone only trains Gi and has to defend against someone in a t-shirt and try to grip, it's going to be an issue. Just my opinion, of course.

      @@OpenMatChronicles It really does depend on your focus right? One could argue that if you improve your control in no-gi as far as positional control and submission control then you gi performance in that area would also improve because of the additional gripping. Conversely you could also argue that if you have improved and really great defense and escapes in the gi your defense and escapes in no-gi would be even better do to the lack of gripping. But again, just improve your bjj in general and it all gets better. :)
