You know what they say,"youth is wasted on the young”
I subscribed. Great content! You’ve got a mininstry with this podcast. Keep posting. Eddie from Atlanta, Ga. 53 year old two stripe white belt. I love this martial art. I’ve learned patience, persistence, and humility. I’ve lost 26 pounds and counting. And, I’ve finally found a community to be a part of since I got out of the Marine Corps.
Sweater and shirt chokes are the same. You bunch up the material and use it for collar chokes
Terrible audio. Why the music?
because I've had music on all the shorts...youtube has made some changes, and I'm working to adjust. Thanks for the heads up though. They should improve.
I couldn’t hear the music because of the video😢
Sorry... Trying to fine tune the volumes in the app
You guys are killing it
Thank you very much.... Next week is REALLY good! We truly appreciate your support
Just discovered your channel today, as it came up on my feed. Looking forward to more, keep up the great work! 💪
thank you! We try to get out a new episode every week. We appreciate your support.
I think training in the style you may not compete in CAN benefit you if you are focusing on the principle behind the techniques because all fighting really just comes down to physics and biology . So if there's say a choke you can do using the gi, how can you translate that same choke into your no gi game? Sorry I can't give specifics , my grappling knowledge is pretty basic but this reminds me of training empty hands vs weapons . I may be doing something with a stick or knife that gets me thinking "ok , now do that with just your hands "
For sure.... There are plenty of ways to make what you are doing translate. It's a matter of training with a purpose of you want crossover. I don't think it will be as natural a transition if you don't really pay attention to how it applies in various scenarios

Rolling with Manny is always a fun yet humbling experience
😂 He said King of Practice
That’s my professor & my friend Julio C.
Let’s Gooooooo
LABOR is worse
@@beccasuemclean HAHAHAHAHA, I guess I'll have to take your word for it😆
33:24 while shoyo does provide a 13% increase in skill, few know the origin gives an 18% boost. Bit the bullet and signed up for JJWL next month in Stockton. First comp as a blue belt but wish I competed just a bit more as white. Otoh I’ll be with other masters 3s roughly my weight so it should be good 😅🤙
My discount Amazon Gis are pretty much a zero sum gain on skills
Harold doesn’t like to be called Professor. If it’s a PhE, wouldn’t he be Professor Shafer?
yeah, I guess I would have to accept it then... LOL
Does Harold hate circles or running more??
I hate them equally LOL
One time at an open mat at Capitol, an older guy put on a Spotify playlist called Dark Country. Damn, it was cool! I love going there for how close it is compared to Buena Vida. And Maxwell but it’s further. This chat was fun as hell listening to
I used to live in Texas...I have had country music playlists for open mat for sure
I show up to warm ups!! I just watch and stretch with the other purple belts 😂😂
Hahahahahaha typical
Harold and Rod doing a podcast on not skipping warm-ups. This ought to be rich.
HAHAHA!!🤣

Hawaiian reggae
nice.....I definitely play some of that
I'd prefer functional warms ups. When I was teaching on my last trip, the warms ups were repitive drilling of the nights prior techniques to compliment the current night's technique. Meaning that it would flow. On day five the whole warmup would be the entire weeks sequence of techniques that would flow into each other both offense and defense.
I've done enough team building in the military.
same here brother...it helps
I learned something new. Being unfamiliar with the BJĴ culture, I didn't realize this was happening. Decades ago we used sandbagging as a metaphor (in manufacturing) to describe anyone who retained a job at any point in a multiple step process. That is, building up work disproportionately at a particular station to change worķ-rate perceptions. I never really understood the mindset.
Ha facts! That is definitely sandbagging!
Don't talk about my purple belt like that. My mom cares 😂
Good job guys👏👏
Debating reg on this golden state jjwl comp in Stockton next month. As a blue belt one thing I’m concerned about is the notorious blue sandbaggers. Otoh the late great Anthony bourdain (rip) competed at blue as a 58 year old.
Go for it! Listen man, understand the risks, but remember that when you stick it out there... You have to be willing to get it cut off. You can't control who shows up, you can't control how they've trained... You just do your best. Get out there and display your love for the art. Be safe, have fun, and learn something.
Weapons aren’t equalizers, they’re force multipliers.
Thank you for the shout out! You guys are amazing!
Of course...can't wait to come check you guys out
Thank you for the shoutout! Ethan and Izzy are awesome and are both hardworking kids! Hopefully you can visit Blackeye sometime and see them train! 👊🏼
No doubt brother. They love training with you.
Im curious: How does the attacker wearing a coat matter? If someone only trains no gi, wouldn't they just as easily dismantle an un trained attacker no matter what he is wearing? On the flip side, if someone only trains Gi and has to defend against someone in a t-shirt and try to grip, it's going to be an issue. Just my opinion, of course.
Great points in this episode. BJJ is expensive! It sucks because the people who need it most can't afford it.
Totally.... Need to get rich and sponsor some lower income satellite schools for the youngsters
Esther is a BEAST! I've never seen anyone more dedicated. Without fail, I'd see her show up to train day in and day out.
Esther definitely put in the work.
The great Chris Haueter once said "To gi or not to gi? Is a stupid question! its like asking should I do this sex or that sex? You do both!"
It was more along the lines of...If you're focusing on one style, will training in the other style be beneficial? But yeah ideally learn both, at least starting off.
Your Jiu Jitsu should be good jiu jitsu no matter what clothes you are wearing.
I agree... that's why I am always cool, Gi or No....but if you are concentrating on one in particular...will training the other actually help?
@@OpenMatChronicles It really does depend on your focus right? One could argue that if you improve your control in no-gi as far as positional control and submission control then you gi performance in that area would also improve because of the additional gripping. Conversely you could also argue that if you have improved and really great defense and escapes in the gi your defense and escapes in no-gi would be even better do to the lack of gripping. But again, just improve your bjj in general and it all gets better. :)
Hell yea!!! Purple belt for life! Love you all. Baby tank for the win
Great guest. Props to Esther for earning that purple! I like how her universe resembles Harry Potter. You’re either a BJJ wizard from one of many schools, or an ungifted muggle (normie).
Man, we loved when she said normie!! LoL
🔥
ESTHER!!
BABY TANK!!
*Promo SM* 😳
One of our affiliate guys got his lower leg splintered at that F2W and Rod is more upset about his boy being disrespected😂. I really want to know more about the former event and how to not be that guy, but gotta respect the loyalty to a friend.
Audio much better on this one 🤙 At a Sacto arte suave a couple years ago an opponent coach was screaming at his blue belt to put his balls in my teammate’s face. Maybe normally not a big deal but kids were there 😑
Jeez..... Yeah, that fits being unsportsmanlike... Especially around kids
I gotta make sure you guys know my skills 😂😂
Hahahahahaha....no doubt brother
Brown belt 100 lbs lighter and older. Sounds familiar
it was about you brother!!
Go figure story was familiar. @@OpenMatChronicles
Harold “IM TIRED BOSS” 😂
LOL stay strong😂😂 that's what they always told me
I started at buena vida and God willing my family and I will remain there. Maxwell and Capitol are alright but you can’t beat a great place that’s less than 5mi from your home. Btw bald guy’s audio is real quiet
Thank you.... We will check on 1865 Rod's mic. My current jujitsu academy is maybe 5 minutes away from my house with traffic, but for the first 13 years or so I traveled 45 minutes one way four to six times per week sometimes on a good day I would do a double and just chill out in my car until the night class starts.
@@OpenMatChronicles I love the dedication! 🤙 man, if BV was that far nooo way would my wife let me train as much as I do lol
Thanks for the support brother
Cheers to the 6 stripe OGs!
Yeah buddy!
What a great episode. Thanks for having us on! Was such a blast. Also everyone make sure to watch the extra after credit scene for a good laugh 😂😂
M an, that was a great time.. Thank you for coming out
You said it right . Great job!
I’ve been very fortunate to have had many people pour into me from the start including both of you guys and I have seen how much faster you grow when you have someone guiding you. Nowadays, I have my good friend and Instructor Professor Manny, who has been pouring into me every single day. I can visit other schools and I always get asked if I train with manny because of the similarities of the game.
Oh he's been pouring into you everyday huh? 😂😂😂
