The Artist/Collector Experience: Interview with Josh Kasper
Great tips! My newsletter has always been the most important marketing in my 20+ years in business.
Thanks for actually showing how to do this, as well as providing great tips!
So many good ideas! Thank you for this!
This is so helpful!
Smart, creative, and instantly useful ideas for the artist who needs to be in the social space for self-branding (which means every artist.) Thank you, Hallie!
Thanks so much Chris!!!
One of the most common problems artists run into is manipulating their images to be in a format and appropriate size for use on social media, to attach to emails, or to send to potential collectors/galleries, etc. This tutorial shows just how simple it is to resize, reformat, crop and improve images of your art.
Really helpful thank you
Great ideas, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing these ideals in such a lovely way.
Love this! So many great ideas, inspired me to make a goal list of future short films to create. Since I work in many different mediums; short films will allow me the opportunity to show my fan base, what I do and what I use to do it. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your feedback Jean! Short videos can be very powerful. Glad you found yourself inspired!
Which of these social media post strategies works best with your art? These ideas run the gamut, and can be easily created by artists who don't have a lot of experience creating posts or videos, up to those who regularly use special effects.
Even though I am a seasoned artists with many shows behind me, I found this video totally inspiring and informative. Learned a couple new tricks. Thank you for your post Carolyn.
Glad it was helpful for you!
Very helpful! I know some artists they need to show diversity. Have continuity in your work is a great tip!
Absolutely!
This is a very good video. We concur that AI can be an invaluable tool for art creators, both for image creation and as a business tool. Used ethically, AI image generation opens up exciting possibilities, making it a powerful asset in the modern artist's toolkit. Good job! Thank you for posting it.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your opinion!
This is such good advice. I was lucky the one time that I consigned my art. I had no contract! It worked out better than I had hoped, but now I realize how many mistakes I made!
Mistakes are always the best lessons learned. I'm glad your situation worked out.
Great video! I'd like to see more videos on how to use AI for the business side of being an artist.
Great idea! We'll work on that.
Yes, I notice lighting is a big challenge when photographing artwork.
Absolutely! Here is an article on how to take great photos www.artsyshark.com/2018/10/17/how-to-photograph-your-artwork/
These tips will help any artist improve their portfolio shots.
This was great information. I was struggling to write a fitting description of two of my paintings. AI gave me perfect descriptions of what I was trying to say. Mind-blowing! paintings
It is very useful for putting words together!
This is a very engaging and informative video! I agree with the artists who said AI is going to be another tool in an artist's toolkit. It is there for those of us to use if we wish, or not.
Wonderfully informative video! I really like seeing the varied approaches from different artists.
Thanks. We agree that seeing what artists are doing makes the video very relevant.
Congratulations, Jan McCarthy! 4:55 Wonderful, personalized exposure plus fine storytelling. You wisely retained a professional to produce the video, an excellent investment that works so well! I voiced and edited my own video BUT also included a colleague's invaluable drone video clips to establish artist Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico homes. Of course, with permission, credits and URL: ua-cam.com/video/rt0Wu1a1ocw/v-deo.html
Thanks for your comment and kind words, Christopher!
thank you for sharing my website! you provide such great information about website content
You are so welcome Jan!! Gorgeous home page!
It's probably very good. However, I can hardly understand the American English.
Where are you from? She doesn't seem to have a distinct accent. But I get it! I struggle to understand people from Great Britain! 😆
Really helpful for artists, and thanks for the shout out!
Thank you Carolyn for including me in your video!
You are so welcome!
Thank you Carolyn!

Excellent information - thanks for sharing!! I really appreciate the examples you refer to -- they really help.
This is great advice for me. Short and simple - yet not easy. A good way to start 2024.!
Maybe even use a professional photographer
That would be the very best solution. We always recommend pro photography, especially for an artist's portfolio. If you have an appointment for a photographer to come to your studio, have him take shots of you working on your art, etc to get as much marketing collateral as possible.
Great, informative video, short and to the point. It's given me a lot of food for thought. Thank you
Thanks, glad you were inspired!
Thank you for the excellent advice
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video, thanks so much Carolyn! ❤
You are so welcome!
These are definitely good things to note! I was thinking, while listening to this video, maybe a muse about taxes, and resources for artists on doing taxes themselves might be interesting
I charge for shipping. (I use Pirate Ship in the US) If I offer free shipping - it's truly that - the art price stays the same but it is a special offer. As an individual artist - I am not amazon. I am not competing with them or big box stores. The shipping supplies (boxes, packing) are added as business expenses and are figured in how I price my work just like paint and other supplies. I struggled a long time with all of this and found that no one expects free shipping from me and expects to pay sales tax too. I've not lost anything, and gained my peace lol. ✌🏼(Side note: I do realize international shipping can be very very expensive and some artists do cut a deal with collectors. That is a different ball game - I'm not in that arena yet)
Fantastic advice. Thanks for your input Melissa!
This is a good point! I think especially applicable to using "art speak", which is super vague, and irritating even when one "gets" art.
You are right! "Art speak" is vague and confusing. And annoying.
When the wording sounds too scripted I know it is false. It is almost daily that someone sends me a message and it is usually from Instagram. It happens a lot if I post in a commission type tag. I get it so often that now I just start out with you will have to purchase through my website so I don't waste a bunch of time coming up with proposals for them. As soon as they start whining and saying they don't understand how to use the site I block them.
Scammers are everywhere these days. Glad you are trusting your "spidey sense" to steer clear of them.
Attempts are made in me every day, multiple times. The red flags for me? Interest in my art😳
It's true that scammers profess interest in the artist's work to draw them in with a potential sale. At that point, some artist's common sense goes out the window and they fall victim to the scam.
Thank you for this informative video! Whenever someone approaches me online to purchase (not through the cart) my art or commission me to make some art for them I reply that I only accept payment through PayPal invoices and the always stops them in their track!!
Glad it was helpful!
One way how we can discourage the scammers is to make them believe they found a victim, make them work hard on "explaining" how to make a NFT, telling them - I do not understand, please explain i simple terms, make screenshots how to do it, I really do not understand, you have to explain it better... untill they get disappointed and finally give up. Let them hope they are going to be paid and get nothing!
Although speaking with a scammer is a waste of your time, I'm sure you got some satisfaction in wasting theirs!
You said it best at the beginning of the video, "do not give them control of the transaction." I was taken advantage of by two middle aged ladies with "venmo", It was a hundred, sixty dollar sale, and because of the typical delay using wi-fi I allowed them to leave with her "warning", "is that satisfactory for you?",....my alarms went off. but foolish me "sure". Never paid/went through. Live and learn. PEACE dear Sister, and God bless your steps/sales with Favor.
Thanks for sharing your experience as a heads up for others!
This video is awesome, Carolyn! Helpful, and informative! I once fell for something I think was a scam on eBay, because a person purchased my work for more than I had put on there, and I accepted the offer, then they inboxed me on eBay with some question about the thing they had just bought, and after reading a bit I was incredibly crest-fallen and cancelled the transaction. The point about scammers taking control of the situation is such a good observation, which I think works for any different swindling method that might prop up in the future.
Thanks for your comment Gabriela and for your support of this channel. I’m glad you cancelled the transaction before you could be robbed. It’s hard to feel you lost a sale, but is much worse to know you were robbed.
What a great explanation on starting from zero!
Thanks for your comment and for being a subscriber Gabriela!
I have tried something similar for a few years and have made a few sales. I will include your advice about "appreciating their friendship and support of me as an artist". Thanks!
In that way, you personalize the communication. Friends and family are the best place to start your list.
This is a really great idea and a really good point about what a potential buyer of art might want to know about the purchase itself!
Thank you Carolyn!
Yes, absolutely agree with what you shared. I was just talking to another artist today how not everyone is your customer. And lije you said, most peoole are NOT your customer. It's kind of freeing to hear that. So important not to waste our time with them.
