What page is this script on? I just ordered and read and couldn’t find it. Definitely worth the read but also very interested in the script for land access. I also just subscribed so therefore I feel that you now have to answer me! Please and thank you of course
It's in chapter 2 on page 12. If you want, I have a downloadable template in the companion article. It's similar but tweaked a bit. It's what I send out and have great success with. huntkillcook.com/hunting-permission-form-how-to-get-free-hunting-permission/
...and thanks for the sub! It definitely gets you a little extra attention ;)
All you need is yourself, camo, a gun and the most important Toilet paper
oof yeah TP is essential. Getting caught without it can be.... tricky
Good video! Plucking is the term. Deep hook as you described is the term for your solution. Another solution is to assure you are expanding on release with elbow going straight back by having a follow through anchor path. For me it is pulling my index finger across my ear lobe long after the arrow is gone. Keeps release motion in a perfect plane of the arrow path.
Awesome advice; thanks for weighing in! I'll have to keep the release follow through in mind. Having a point to pull through is definitely helpful.
Great tip. Instant subscribe
Thanks so much! Glad you're with us
Torquing the bow can also cause this. I changed my grip form and noticed the difference instantly. I also shoot deep hook, 3 under. Cheers!
I know I've said it but it's just crazy how many factors affect the shot. Coming from the compound world, it's been quite the adjustment for me. Thanks for weighing in!
This was extremely informational, thank y’all
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching
I got permission to hunt 66 acres for free just from a phone call. I'm in Ohio too. It can be done.
Boom! Way to go!! Thanks for sharing some encouragement
Great video subbed! You need more subs
Thank you kindly! Keep watching and engaging and more subs will come :)
@@huntkillcookkeep it up bro, also I bought that book where does it talk about sending the letter what chapter ?
It's a great book, you wont be disappointed. It's in chapter 2, in my book, the bit about the letter is on page 12.

I second that!!
Big thanks
when i read your comment i was like no way they only have 700 subs, they def deserve a lot more
@OakleyB136 yea I was really surprised. Thanks for commenting. Needed to watch this again 😂I'm asking for permission to hunt some ground tomorrow
I don't agree with your choice of weapons to many people just shoot without knowing were there bullets are landing especially newbie's
Thanks for the comment! I agree that unsafe shooters do unsafe things (usually without realizing it). My comments are my opinion on the most effective squirrel eliminator without having to remove many bbs from the meat. I assume that you are a shotgunner? I do concede that shotguns don't shoot as far and thus could be considered safer for society in the event that a new hunter is unaware of what is behind their target. (Queue the Dick Cheney jokes). Great point and thanks for contributing!
Question, Im unofficially disabled. What rifle would you suggest . I walk with a cane . Any advice would be helpful
I would look into a super light rifle like the Henry Survival, Winchester Wildcat, or the Ruger 10-22 Takedown (ordered from lightest to heaviest). They are all under 4.6 lbs and are great rifles. A good sling will also be really helpful with walking through the woods safely. I know some people hunt with .22 handgun with a red-dot or small pistol scope attached. I've never done it personally but it might be something to look into if one-handed operation would be beneficial. Another suggestion would be to just carry in any 'ol .22 with you (again a good sling is vital), bring a comfortable folding chair or stool, set up near good squirrel sign and sit quietly. If you've picked a good spot you will definitely get some shot opportunities. Good squirrel hunting isn't only available to those who still-hunt or stalk through the woods. They may see more squirrels in a day, but sitting in one spot can still be really productive. Hopefully this is helpful and that you get out and nab some tree-chickens :)
@@huntkillcook thank you
I do this same thing. I bet there are so many people doing the same thing and thinking their arrow spine is too stiff. Great video!
Thanks! Like I said, I love to blame my equipment, it can't talk back so why not? :D
3 fingers under for lazy archers...
LOL I'm the laziest :) I started split finger but found that 3 under worked a lot better for me. In fact, it worked so well that I'm considering going 4 under... I mean, more is better, right?? What works best for you and why?
Hey man great video thanks for the tips!
I'm glad it was helpful to you. Thanks for watching!
Loved the video. One suggestion. Put an old cast iron pan or equivalent on top of coals and fill with dry small chunks. Wet wood creates "dirty" smoke. Again, just a small critique worth trying, not trying to hate on your video, might steal a couple of your ideas!
Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely try that. We are always trying to learn and grow here. Anything to help people enjoy the procurement and consumption of wild game is a good thing :)
@huntkillcook You the man! I'll be sure to check out your other videos
A little inaccurate but still really good … I’m just so glad people are getting this info about my favorite historical figure out there
We try to be as accurate as possible, a lot of the material is from Pope's book. I really enjoyed the story as well, there are so many aspects that are really compelling. Thanks for the comment!
@@huntkillcook and also I must say it was good to hear about another person shooting a recurve bow and all of its differences…. Made me feel a little less crazy in the things I noticed… but it is certainly my favorite way to shoot… have you tried shooting ishi style I have done it that way since I was 12 . It definitely has its ups and downs
I love shooting recurve and working to figure it out. It's a challenge and is so rewarding. I haven't tried Ishi's style, I don't think it would work with my center-cut recurve. I'll have to find a longbow and give it a try!
I just switched from compound to Traditional, was having a left grouping issue as well. I am shooting split finger with a 58” bow and was so focused on my anchor that I didn’t realize I was pinching the arrow with my to finger when drawing. After correcting this, arrows were grouping centered. Still a quite large group, but centered.
Yeah, pinching that arrow can be very easy to do when shooting split. I don't want to start a war here (there are many passionate opinions on this subject) but have you tried shooting three fingers under? It moves arrow closer to your eye and, I think, makes it easier to align the shots for more consistent and tighter groups. It also helps whether you're gap shooting or "instinctive" shooting.
If you must use dump sacks or if you strongly prefer to wear your saddle on your hike in to your stand, this saddle is not for you. Both are essential for me.
Thanks for the input! I don't use dump sacks but use a large fanny pack instead. I do still wear my saddle into the woods with me, currently I'm dealing with the annoyance but will probably try one of the many suggestions offered in the comments here.
aim 6 inches to the right
Yes that just might work :D
Had my ESS modified by the Amish gentleman that John recomends. 1,000% recomend.
I can't say I know that mod. What did he do for you?
@@huntkillcook look up ESS mods on eberhart outdoors youtube channel. Basically the waist belt to a quick adjust strap and buckle on it. Permanently sewed bridge. Zero issues with it now.
Thanks!
That skit sucked! 😂
I blame the writing team, they clearly don't know what they're doing
Thank you i was missing so hard left but no im dead on. Id gotten use to the left miss so i gotta train myself on actually hitting straight now
This is great news! Thanks for letting us know, it's very encouraging. Keep shooting and thanks for watching
2 pound bow
it's actually a 1 lb bow.... I'm working up to the 2 lb :D
Paracord and superglue. Done. You'd die just trying to decide on the method of first aid with all this.
There's something to be said for the MacGyver nature of your kit :D I'm glad we at least got the paracord right lol Thanks for watching!!
I suggest you get a little more serious when it comes to medical gear. Cheap medical gear is made to sell and not save. I understand you may think its dorky or something to be serious about that but if you carry life saving equipment make sure its actually capable of saving your life.
Rhino rescue TQs work I been testing mine for over 3 years.
Rhino Rescue
I know anything can happen in the woods but the scenario in my mind was a tree stand fall, a serious laceration, or the like. Although I'm not a medical expert, this kit would be helpful in those situations. Please let us, and everyone else who watches this, know what else should be included. I appreciate your comment and desire to help. Thanks for weighing in!
I have the problem with arrows shooting left . I took the guiver off of my bow to correct that problem .
Interesting! Why do you think the quiver was causing the bow to shoot left? Is it a weight distribution issue, I wonder?
Had to be weight/mass to riser , I had the same problem on several different bows regardless of riser grip type or style .
That's good info to keep in mind. Everything has a consequence when it comes to archery, especially traditional.
I think it changes the harmonics when you add weight/ mass to the handle off side .
Is your quiver the type that attaches to the limbs or does it screw into the riser?
Overdrawing I pull back too hard my arrows go to the right every time and the reason that go right I shoot left-handed
Ah yeah I've heard that overdrawing can cause that too. Have you seen the clicker that you can attach to the limb/string that lets you know when you're at full draw? At least for training it might be a good tool. I know that another UA-camr named Clay Hayes is a proponent of them, he has some good info on it.
Sorry what did you say? Maybe turn the music off when you talk you will get more likes!
Noted! Thanks for commenting and giving us a comment
Over spined arrow also could cause that, no expert though !!!
Yeah that was definitely a thought, which I tried to fix with heavier points. Thankfully I went to the camera and saw the real problem. Thanks for the comment and watching!
Good instructional video
Thank you! We're glad you're watching :D
you were plucking the string . shallow draw is fine just learn to pull through the shot
Form. Form. Form. There's so much to learn, which is what I love about the recurve. Thanks for weighing in!
Me too
why the stupid music?
No worse than a stupid question...😉
well that's an easy question....because we love stupid music! 😁
I like ur video you did great job thanks so cool the way you did it I will be watching more of them👍
Thank you! We're glad you're with us.
Around here squirrel are like deer theyll spot you from a mile away and run as soon as they see you
backwoods squirrels, paranoid little boogers. Sounds like a good opportunity to hone your stalking skills.
I enjoyed your video. What magnification and lens diameter binoculars do you recommend? I took up squirrel hunting this year after 40 years of deer hunting and enjoyed it. I noticed that apparently many times the squirrels "busted me" (saw me) and started barking. The problem was I couldn't locate them while they were barking, but I'm pretty sure they are visible because they typically are looking at the "threat" while they bark. I'm thinking a good set of binoculars would help locate a barking squirrel. Do yo agree? I'm just not sure what magnification, lens diameter, and any other binocular spec would be ideal for squirrel hunting. Thanks.
Hi Gary and thanks for the question! Yes binos would be hugely beneficial to you :D I use 10x42 which is a good all-purpose magnification. I've also found that if you can hear them barking then they are looking at you. They don't *usually* run and hide just because you are there. They sit in the tree as still as they can and bark non-stop until you either pass by or they perceive you as a greater threat. The one dead giveaway, that they can't help, is that every time they bark, their tail twitches. With binoculars, it's a lot easier to find this little bit of movement. All that's left is to make the shot. We generally recommend the Vortex brand (good quality and excellent warranty) but I've also had some great luck with Nikon, specifically the Monarch line (I've been using the "Monarch 3" for years). Maykell (the man behind the camera) uses the Vortex and likes it. Here's an Amazon affiliate link to the Vortex Diamondback HD 10x42 binos - amzn.to/43OXS21 This is a link that benefits us and costs you nothing extra to use. Hopefully that's of some value to you. Thanks for watching and let us know how your hunting improves! God bless, Andre
For squirrel woods you're looking under 100 yards, more like 25-60 yrds. 7x32 Binos are good. I have 8x32. Any more magnification and my shaking hand becomes distracting. Even at 8x, it is quite noticeable.
Tree rats chicken of the tree
Love it! My dad always called them Tree Rats
If you connect the medal D loops with a small carabiner itll tighten it up around your waist for the walk in. The best option would be to have a custom tightening strap like on John's own saddle. He has a great video about it.
Thanks for weighing in! I didn't think about using a carabiner to connect the D loops. Looking forward to giving it a try.
Now you have 7 subs ;)
Incredible! So glad you're with us :D
I used it for 2 years and the time has come to try another saddle with no D-rings. They are not practical for resting a firearm or crossbow on your bridge and they hurt my wrists and hands when I’m hanging with my hands in my coat pockets which I do a lot to keep movement to a minimum.
I have no experience resting a gun on the bridge but I can see how that might be difficult. Most of the time when I'm in the sitting position my arms are around the bridge with my hands in my jacket pockets. It sounds like yours might be underneath. Thanks for commenting!
Yeah that tree looked way too easy man. 😂
I have the ESS and it works great, i use amsteel for the bridge and DO NOT use the prusic knot, and as another stated wrap it around your waist and it keeps everything snug so walking is more comfortable, get rid of the prusic knot
Awesome thanks for sharing!
Hey man thank you so much for your tips am gonna put em in action before hunting season starts. Good to know all this. 👍👌🙏
Glad to hear it! Just keep at it, you'll still likely hear a lot of "NO" but you will eventually get that sweet "YES". Thanks for watching!
Same problem.Grate info.I ll try to change my release .Thanks !
Thanks for watching!
Just mind your public lands rules about trimming/ screw in steps, etc. Stay safe!
100%
I've been mobile hunting in some fashion since 1976. We began building our tree sets with scrap wood in the off season and spikes or Cranford screw in steps. Remember, this is before the evolution of strap-on steps or climbing sticks and before allot of regulations in my home state of NC. Moving forward we evolved to the hang on stands, then into the climbers. In 2020 I purchased my first saddle from Aero Hunter and the fun began. I started off with Lone Wolf sticks and then to the WEI steps. The steps are my present choice for climbing. I like watching you young guys for new ideals and innovations. Great content!
Thanks for the kind words. That's a very similar path that I went. Ladder stands --> hang ons --> climber for a bit --> saddle. I won't go back. We're glad you're watching and weighing in!
@@huntkillcookI was already thinking about going this route with the steps to get away from climbing sticks, because I hate them, even the minis ugh...and this video of yours confirmed it for me. Thank you
1. Sick name. 2. You're welcome! Glad we provided some value to you. We're happy you're watching!
@@huntkillcook have those cranford steps that you climb with ever slipped while you're climbing? Or has the strap? I'm worried about that if I try these. Also, is there an alternative strap and step I could try if they do slip on me? Perhaps some squirell steps with ocb straps
In my experience over the last few years, I've never had a strap/step slip. I've used them in the snow, ice, and rain; I've never had a problem. The only thing that has ever happened is they sometimes loosen up a tad (after your weight has been on them from climbing), which causes the angle of the step to be *very slightly* slanted towards the ground. It's never caused a safety concern for me but that's the worst I've experienced. I would still highly recommend. The squirrel steps and ocb straps look be fine too but don't fold up, that's a feature I really like about the cranfords.
I'm still bias towards my WEI step ladder system. With a Knaider/Swaider I can take 4 steps and get 18 foot or higher. The JE saddle is awesome.
Awesome! That's a great setup for sure. 4 steps sure is nice! Thanks for sharing your setup.
I appreciated the content of the video. It's what beginning hunters or those contemplating hunting need to hear. I started squirrel hunting last winter. I bought a Henry .22LR and mounted a Leupold 4X Rimfire scope. Good kit, IMO. However, I since discovered I cannot shoot that rig accurately. I am unable to consistently group 5 shots within 1 inch at 50 yards from a bench. I don't know if it's the trigger pull which is a little heavy or that my eyes have trouble with the fine reticle of the scope. I begin to see double. I switched to my 20 ga Rem Wingmaster in the spring season and harvested my first squirrels. I also have a CZ452 American with a Sightron 3-9x scope. I am able to group that one just fine, 1/2" or a little more at 50 yards with the scope dialed up to 6x. The reticle is thicker than the one on the Leupold. What group size are you able to consistently achieve with your Henry at 50 yards? What do you consider the minimum accuracy required for taking a .22LR rifle into the squirrel woods?
I know I get eye fatigue pretty quickly and have a hard time focusing on certain reticles too. I had a Nikon BDC that I really liked but ended up getting rid of it because I lost focus after 5 seconds of looking at it. On a rest at 50 yards I can probably shoot 1 inch (although I haven't done it so it's just a guess). I shoot pretty tight groups freehand. I know the trigger is a bit heavy but that doesn't really bother me much. As far as minimum accuracy, if I can hit a 2 - 3 inch target freehand that's enough for me. I think it's possible to get too focused on tight accuracy on the bench. If the gun is shooting fairly reliable, maybe not the most accurate, but "good enough" then I'm fine taking it in the woods. That's my personal opinion. Sorry I can't give you more concrete numbers. Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you're getting out there putting dinner on the table!
You have to buy an older rifle most of the newer manufacturered Rifles just don't have the accuracy
here is something that i love to do , adjust my scope for 30 yards that often helps me get to where i've become 1 shot 1 kill i would recommend dialing your scope to 30 yards max/minimum
Wow! These guys sound so sexy in podcast format!
