Why We Make Things & Why It Matters | Peter Korn | Life With Strings Attached Ep. 35

Why do we make things? What is it that draws so many of us to hunker down in dusty workshops, pick up some hand tools, or devote hours to any kind of craft and creation? We might sometimes be mystified by our own obsession or powerful draw towards making things - that feeling of a need to create. Jamie, I’ve sang my praises before so please forgive my redundancy. But for someone that is a player first yet obsessed with the art and processes of various builder/creators, you are doing a grand service. Having long form interviews with intelligent conversations and not catering to the pedestrian is a gift to the future. I caught hell and was ridiculed for my first Novax’s & Teuffel’s in the 90’s. But I liked what I liked. Funny how it’s mainstream now. 20 seconds ahead of my time :) I do hope it’s profitable enough or at least rewarding enough for you to continue this. Thankest You!!!

Simply put, Enrico is a very talented guy. So much talented that he makes the most impressive instruments I've ever had the opportunity to play. I own the Eudemonia one, which you can see in his webpage. Nothing compares to it. It's emotions translated in an object. No words are enough to let you understand what that instrument is. Any single EXPERIENCED musician that has tested the Eudomonia, has modified his feeling of what a guitar could be. Enrico widened the borders of the contemparary electric instruments luthery. And still so few people has had the opportunity to verify what he has been able to achieve. Furthermore he is one rare and beatiful soul.

A bothersome attempt by an obsolete middleman in the musical instrument industry to pivot towards podcasting. With cringey aloofness , Gale squanders the guests time with his lengthy mild diatribes consisting primarily of incohereant musings ripped from popular motivational speakers and offensively patronizing observations of the guests artistic genius while systematically referencing some brief personal history with the guest, in a fruitless attempt to build rapport with the listener. I applaud the guests, many of whom are personal friends, for their professionalism in seeing these conversations through to the end. I have never felt the need to actively criticize a podcast, but after the most recent episode featuring one of the United Kingdoms foremost craftswomen, where Gale awkwardly compliments her 'womans touch' and then launches into deriving comparisons of good practices in business accountability to British political mechanisms, causes my moral compass to demote this podcast from 'hard pass' to 'warn your children'. This of course comes with my heartfelt condolences and appreciation to all the to all guests, who out of the goodness of their true artisan souls, sat through these interviews and gave this industry leach the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with Grit Laskin's Theory, the speed of sound in the wood is very important in making guitars and vibrating instruments. I don't know if you know the LucchiMeter that is just measuring, it was invented by my father, and I am proud to continue it's study and job. If you want we can talk about that, somewhere. I just talked about that yesterday here in Cremona with Tom Nania, that you interview in this channel too.

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461

?? Never heard or seen anything from him, sorry. OK, I just did some searching : I don't see anything "innovative" looking at his guitars other then that they look weird next to other weird looking guitars from other "innovative" builders. 3D printing and CAD don't necessarily make nice designed guitars. I compare this to modern "art": it is the poetic made up story attached to it that somehow should make this into objects of desire. Give me Nik Huber when it comes to beautiful and innovative guitars any day of the week.

@@Steinstra-vj7wl Thanks for the kind words! We are actually working on a video about the Dolphin, telling the whole story - it won't be out for a bit, but that will tell the whole story. The body shape was originally drawn on a rainy holiday, then put away for a while, then put on my wall for a long time, then revisited and tweaked a bit. It was really an attempt to fuse several designs I liked into something new but familiar

Love it, I am so happy that discussion is on UA-cam, honestly been thinking some of the topics the same way but to scared to talk about stuff to instrument market which runs on emotion at times

"I'm left with... I just have to do what I do..." I don't know if you spent any time Michael, *trying* to do life the way other people told us we should. I did and it just made me angier and angrier. To have the experience of life that people like us demand, there really is no other choice but to follow your kind of path. We only spent a little time together at the last Holy Grail, but you've been an inspiration to me ever since. Thank you, Michael!
