there are those who would ban horse competition, when actually it should be striving for this instead of seeing how much the vet, farrier, tack and crazy courses can con volute the horse human equation... don't kill the dream, realize it
I also have seen this this video many times and never get tired of seeing it.
Outstanding riding between horse and rider. Her Dad would be so proud of her. My Dad put me on a horse at age 2 and there I went. Miss my Dad every day. He taught me to be strong and never stopped me from doing the things I love.
🙌🙌🙌
The Horse spinning around is perfect "burn out", when a Horse wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness 😁
my dog dont want to let go to the flirt pole. .
Work on the release with a tug, then the FP "rat" held in your hand. Once your dog can release the tug and the rat from your hand, reattach the rat to the flirt pole and you should be good to go!
@@positiveherdingdog1369 do you have a video on that sir, ?

This is so totally amazing !
Wow, thanks for sharing! I bought the book and dropped the ball, but now I’m reinspired
Go girl!
Thanks for your videos!
Hope you find my videos helpful!

I love your videos!!
I love your comments!!!
So what exactly is the benefit of treats? I mean the sheep are already a positive reinforcer themselves so why would you want to come up with another (lower value) reinforcer like treats or tug?
I use treats and tugs to teach herding skills away from livestock. Then when I take the dog to stock they understand the herding cues. Once on stock, the cues and the stock become the reinforcers.
@@purplebordercollie7650 thanks for your reply. I train more traditionally but always open for other influences of course. If I look at your videos I get the feeling that it’s almost obedience training with distractions (in this case the sheep). So what happens when the sheep are stubborn and don’t want to move?
@@P10cwm20. This is my question as well. I would love to see a video or two of some dogs trained with this approach actually moving sheep. I do a lot of positive obedience and scent work training, and my dogs have a solid stop, lie down, and directional commands off livestock. But I really struggle with applying all that to sheep that are moving some place I don’t want them to go. Some discussion on transitioning to applying these commands to moving stock would be really interesting.
This Would be great for Riggs but I doubt any of my instructors would agree with it and I don't have easy access to sheep on my own .
You could also work this with a flirt pole if you don't have access to stock.
Super nice calm patient dog !
Consistency is the key, no?
I just love your practical approach! I’m ordering your book and hope yo meet you in person someday
Thanks! Would love to meet you too!
Great video, Barb
Love it!
Hooray! looking forward to getting my copy!
How do you slow down the walk up? Big struggle for us
If I wanted a slower walk, I might hold up the hand that isn't holding the tug in a stop position, palm facing my dog and hand raised up and out away from my body as I say my recall cue. Another idea would be to capture walking when you have your dog on leash and are walking side by side. Name the walk behavior when you are both walking, then encourage your dog to trot with you and name the trot. After you have trotted together a short distance, slow down and when your dog slows to a walk, name the walk. Eventually, the name of the behavior becomes the cue for the behavior so you would start cueing walk just before you slowed to a walk. Once you have the walk on cue, then try the training as shown in this video.
Glad I found you. I am learning to herd with my 4 year old female border collie and I have been wondering how to do this using R+. Thank you for documenting and sharing your lessons with us.
Thanks Beth! It has been quite the undertaking of figuring out a structure for positive herding and documenting it along the way. Best wishes with your bc on your herding journey.
This video is amazing!! Coincidentally I ran across your book and youtube then recommended your channel, and am I glad it did. Would love to one day meet you and now i can't wait for your book to arrive so that I can start on this marathon of a journey with my Border Collie puppy.
So glad to have you join my herd! Best wishes on your herding journey.

Learning a lot! 🤓
Hi Barb!! We have our first introduction to herding on saturday and it was fun : ) we don't have any farm or something but for some reason I love watching herding, our dog is Ahri an 18 month old border collie, and today I was looking how to train without sheeps or livestock and I found your channel!!! it reminds me a lot to Kikokup channel : ) Thank you for doing this!!! I'm going to watch all your channel!!! And keep the vids comming, I know that making these kind of videos have a lot o work! Cheers from Colombia 🇨🇴
Welcome, Cristian & Ahri! Many thanks for your kind words. I wish you fun and much success on your herding journey. Your videos are works of art, maybe you want to produce my videos? ;-) Best wishes!
I have the book and I just love it!!! Thank you!!!
Wow, Barb. That’s scary.
Nicely done
This is great!
Awesome video, thank you! I have always wanted to try herding, but there isn't a trainer in my area who I would feel comfortable going to as they are all traditional. It's a big goal of mine to get stock one day and learn herding the positive way.
Thanks for your interest in positive herding! If you would like to learn more, I have a book out that you might find informative: Positive Herding 101. Cheers!
@@positiveherdingdog1369 Just finished reading it a few weeks ago. Great resource!

Awesome stuff to have been interviewed by Ken!
It was an honor to be on Live from the Ranch with Ken Ramirez!
This explains a lot! I've definitely seen that with my Keeshond, he's incredibly confident and the sheep prefer to be way off of him never giving him issue. My husband missed a sheep while asking Bear, the Kees, to walk in, the sheep leapt up into the air to avoid being touched and was absolutely terrified. Bear calmly backed up, giving the sheep space, which allowed them to regroup and continued to work. Meanwhile my young BC they do, occasionally, challenge her but as she matures and grows they have been starting to calmly bend to her. Thank you so much for the detailed explanations!
Glad to help! Usually if one sheep splits off, it is best to take the rest of the group to the single rather than try to get the single back to the flock.
I appreciate these short informative sessions!
Thanks Theresa! I love to be positively reinforced too. Although the videos are short, they often take a lot of time and effort.
You're not supposed to bribe dogs with treats.
I am actually luring with the food 3 times to get the behavior started. After the first 3 reps I wait for the dog to turn their head or step in the correct direction before marking with "yes" and dropping the treat.
Wizard baby doll? Roxy?
Registered name Wizard's Baby Doll and call name Roxy.
you gave me a lot of great ideas today! I like the idea of two toys so you are rewarding the "release" with another toy!
Great video, thanks Barb .
Hello. you say BIG & SMALL. What is big & small? is there a big round pen that would be good?
A big round pen would work. Small, to me, is about 10 metres or yards in diameter and large would be twice that size. I like a pen large enough for the dog to get ahead of and turn the stock. I don't want the dog just following along on the stock's flanks with no hope to control them. Hope that helps!
I’m proud of you. Sharing this video with the Cousins 💜
I needed this today! thanks for the reminder that we are a team (my dog and me) or (my horse and me) and we need to be kind to each other on the days one of us is not 100%

That was good Barb! I'm training my new agility puppy and suffering from 24x7 potty training for the last 23 days.....so a reminder to be kind to myself and be objective about our training sessions was so well timed! Thanks!!!!
Glad it helped!

I have seen this so many times.. each time i cry so much, absolutely amazing .. my Dad would have loved this 💔
I used a FP for the first time with my pyr shepherd and was amazed at the change in attitude! She went from insecure and timid to assertive and focused. What instinct does the "rat" bring out? Prey drive? However, now the problem is she wants the rat! I love your book Herding 101 but some nights I have to stop with one chapter and read it again the next night!
Hi Theresa ~ Yes, the rat brings out prey drive. Interesting the change in your dog from timid to assertive. She wants that prey! So glad you are liking my book and finding it helpful. There is a lot of info to take in while reading the book so it is great that you take a break and come back to read it later. If you do some training and read parts again it may make even more sense to you. Please post a review of my book if you haven't yet. Thanks!
Is she riding bare back?

Yes & without a bridle!
