The Boat Virgin

You've been dreaming of getting a boat for ages, and now is the time for you to take the plunge.
- What skills and experience have you got?
- Where should you go to get training?
- How do I even buy a boat and what is the process & costs?
- What equipment do I need to get afloat safety?
- What kind of boat is right for you?
- Do you know how to use a VHF radio?
- What boat boat repairs and maintenance can you try yourself (even if you have zero technical skills)?
Well I have been on this journey since September 2020 and I learn something new pretty much every time I am on my boat, and I am not embarrassed or afraid to video it and share it with you. I've been featured in the May 2021 edition of MotorBoat & Yachting too, where I have shared some of my learnings.
Got questions or suggestions, I am all ears.

Winter Boat Lift '24
It is that brown trouser time of year, when I need to get the boat into the lifting rig without damaging my boat or the rig.
I have confidence using my boat, but this time of year always gives me disturbed sleep! Join me for the annual sweat feast!

A short update on the 1969 Yacht Mega rebuild. Not a lot too much aesthetic change but a whole lot of services update like the wiring and the piping being plumbed in.
Lifting a 1934 wooden boat - will it break?
Переглядів 88621 день тому
This 1934, 48ft wooden boat that weighs in at 18 tonnes hasn't moved for over 15 years, will it move and more importantly will it stay in one piece if it can make it to the lifting rig?

Paphos Boat Trip '24
Переглядів 2033 місяці тому
After our holiday to Jamaica was cancelled last minute, we scrambled to organise another family holiday, and we got lucky, and went to Paphos, on the beautiful island of Cyprus. Beautiful weather, food, drink and people made for a fantastic alternative holiday destination. As usual, a boat trip was required to keep our holiday routine in tact. This is just a short video, hope you like it.
No substitute for Jamaica

With our family trip to Jamaica cancelled at the last minute, we decide to take the boat out for a quick blast in-between trying to sort out another holiday. As always, leave me any comments.

Catamaran Resto-mod update - Part 2
Well, that's me all caught up binge watching this restoration. Excellent job so far, can't wait to see it on the water!
more videos to follow
Hi from Juneau, Alaska. Just found your posts on this lovely old Prout. Must say she's coming along nicely. I would be very interested to know where your brother-in-law sourced the replacement windows. I have a 1985 Prout Quest 33 down in Plymouth UK, and am having some window issues and replacement might be the solution. I hope you are able to keep posting updates on the Cat, sorry not a powerboater!
I will get you the information.
That was a poor summer, only 5 trips out !!!!!
Yep. Tell me about it. Not like the previous year where we were out on it all the time.
Good job guy's nice to keep the old boats going .😊
Let's see what the owner decides to do with it first.....the issue with taking these boats out of the water is that if left too long, the timber dries out.
The paint finish looks amazing, and so much of it.
That would be an interesting project to keep an eye on if the owner decides to to restore it.
I will let you know once I know. It would need so much work though. Although having said that, it is a beautifully elegant boat.
Good work the weather truly has been awful this year for working outdoors.
Lovely boat
It is lovely, wait until you see the decals with the name!
Thanks for a really honest opinion and feedback. I was interested in buying the 780 but think due to lack of safe side decks and small heads I’m 6’2”, I’ll look elsewhere. Cheers
Probably a safe decision, unless you are mega flexible and can fold your self in half before doing your business.!
Certainly looking very nice, a lot of work done, but a lot more to do, looking forward to the next update.
The fit out inside has now started and hopefully should come along at pace. Keep watching and thank your the support.
Interesting video. I'm considering looking at a 780 that my mate is selling
It is a great boat, it really is, but just be really clear about what you will use it for and with who!
Is that a 1965 or 68 Chris-Craft bluewater cruiser
Next to it, possibly.
This is the first video I've watched on your channel... This looks absolutely beautiful... and you are obviously making a lot of progress. Did you say this boat's hull is entirely concrete? or air-kreet? That would be amazing. I'm going to enjoy the next few videos in this series... as everything comes together. Thanks for sharing this project.
thank you for watching them. There a few with another episode to be filmed on it. But the boat is made of ferocrete. Keep watching and let me know what you think.
Be interesting to see the progress on the the cat and the other boat.
Hi Frank, hopefully will try and get some filming done this weekend. I can tell you the Cat looks completely different outside now - was working on it last weekend. I also popped over to the yacht, and that looks amazing, but didn't have my GoPro with me for either. Stay tuned.
Hi sir sorry for being late commenting , but better late than never . My personal view is your boat is ideal for a couple , and no more . Also at this size you are basically buying a floating small caravan , which again small caravans are ideal for two people who don’t have any issues regarding privacy . I would have thought you should get at least what you paid for it , because of the work you have done . And it will have a niche appeal , which might be more than you think . Especially if (no offence meant ), it was to go to a more accessible marina . Us old folks are not as nimble as we used to be , walking long distances to get to a boat are often a challenge . More so than the access to the onboard loo . Best wishes and kind regards , and hope you find your new treasure . 👍
Looking at the brokerage sales prices, I think I may nudge a bit more than I paid for it, but my boat is pretty much next to the car park (if you look back at some of my early videos you'll see how far I had to walk to get to it). I think I'll have my boat for at least another year though.
Thanks for the vids. I'm considering buying an Antares 7.8 with 150hp. Just wondering what ideal cruising speed is and what the fuel consumption is?
Hi Matt, I personally have never worked out the fuel consumption, but I can honestly say, that I have never feel my wallet pinched by the fuel costs. On the ideal cruising speed, it depends on the conditions. If it is a moderate swell, 15 knots is great, but on a flat sea, 25 knots is perfect.
@@TheBoatVirgin thanks. How does it handle a bit of chop? I wouldn’t be going out in very rough seas, but live near Plymouth, where we do usually have some chop once out. Does the hull bang much? I have a two year old and just trying to suss whether I’d be ok cruising at ~23kts, or wind up going much slower to have comfort when there is a bit of wind swell.
@@mattgough6344 when there is a fair bit of chop, it can slap a bit, but bringing it back to displacement speeds is OK, but because the hull is pretty much flat, it rolls a lot. So intend to just about get it on the plane and then is it OK. With a 2 year, when it is flat to a small swell you will be fine.
Aye m8’s! I’m a liveaboard on my Prout Quest 31’, which looks enormously bigger even though it’s not. I’d like to follow this project so now you’ve got a new subscriber.
thank you for subscribing.
Hi, impressive work, hope you don't mind me asking, who made up the aluminum windows? Cheers
I don't know but I can find out for you. Leave it with me.
Can we have a vote on what should be the name of this channel? The Boat Virgin or Just a quick one today or The five minute man
Charlie Willet is doing a fantastic job on her. If ever I was going to completely refit my yacht? I'd be paying him to do it
He is an excellent boat builder. He has done work on my boat too and I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Shes an absolute unit.. ... Cannot wait to see how it looks when the hull is finished.
Me neither. Thanks for watching.
How will he ever get boat insurance for this boat???? If anyone will insure it it’s gonna cost a fortune!!! Please tell me I’m wrong!!!😩
Well it is currently insured I believed by 2 companies, but the owner has confirmed that the list of insurers is small but he has found one that will continue to cover during both the build process and also when completed.
So, what's her name Beautiful, she is
The boats name has temporarily escaped me, but I shall confirm
Hi. if parts seem okay it would suggest that the mixing has been the issue , probably next time if you use an electric drill with a small paddle it might give you better results . But at least your use of tape worked better than I expected , but I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it . There’s plenty of people on UA-cam who are doing resin all the time , and still have major failures with resin . 😊
Thank you. I think you're probably right. Will try that when I get time to re-attempt it.
I think that’s called sods law. Spend all that time doing it and filming it, and it all goes Pete Tong. It did look good.
Yep. But at the end of the day, it is still just a hobby and I am messing about at it.
Ferro boat construction was quite popular in Australia back in the day. You could get a lot of boat for your money if you were willing to put in the work. The downside was that they tended to break up easily if grounded. For some reason they fell out of fashion and were overtaken by steel plate boats as a building medium preferred by backyard builders.
I'd never seen one before this build by a friend, and the state of the hull from the photos, you can see how rough it was. In the latest video you can see how much work has gone into making the finish so much better. I can tell you the hull has also now had its first layer of colour and it looks brilliant.
Thanks for the update looking good 👍
I popped over there today and the first coat of paint is on the hull. Go to my channel video shorts for s sneak peak!
@@TheBoatVirgin where are you southwest?
@@garyhorton9280 South East
That’s a lot of sanding on the hull, but it’s looking good.
Go check out my video shorts on the channel to see the first layer of paint on the hull, it looks very impressive.
Can't beat a day on a boat.
Absolutely. If only this bank holiday weather in the UK would sort itself out.
hi sir looking good But a shame that someone didn’t have the decency to kill the radio while you were filming . Sorry for my rant , but no doubt the people around this project feel the same , as certainly individuals seem indifferent to other members of society . Kind regards to you as always 👍
The radio was my brother-in-law's. It isn't an issue for me, I was there to film his boat and he stopped working so I could film his project. It is his workspace and not mine, I was a guest there for a few minutes. The next video will have even more updates as I was there over this weekend and the progress is really ramping up.
Coming along nicely.
Wait until the next update. I was there over the weekend doing a small job, and the process is motoring away (excuse the punn!)
Amazing work ❤Brother very nice
My brother-in-law is very good at this stuff.
What the hell I’ll give you the second like
❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much.
Time for another visit yet?
Hopefully next week. Like and share wide as this build starts to get onto the home straight.
Looks looks nice.
Can't have a holiday without a boat trip!
Nice trip out, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching the video.
Hi all great to see you out in the boat , and may the indifferent weather be more conducive to future for further outings . Shame regarding your planed holiday , but I’m sure things will be sorted . Plane sailing as always , and kind regards . 👍
Thanks for the watching. The holiday stuff is beyond our control so you just have to roll with it and make the best of it that you can. We managed to get away and video of that will becoming soon.
Great to see you out enjoying the boat 👍
It has been quite a few weeks with the naff weather. Thanks for watching.
Great idea and looks good so far. I’ve been out a few times on my boat now. Next time tomorrow hopefully, taking my partner, her mum and my sister on an evening cruise 😀
excellent stuff.
Nice, very clever idea.
it is an ideal I got from my brother who made some bottle top coasters for me several years ago! Thank you for watching the channel..
Hi sir great idea , as regards the bolt heads could you countersink them below the surface and fill and paint the area . You will presumably be able to fix the post holder from the bottom , so that should be no problem . As for the tape idea to hold back the resin , I’m not sure that would be strong enough . So if you could make some sort of additional support , this would give you a better of a level consistent surface . And prevent a major resin leak , and waste material which can be quite expensive . Hope you don’t mind my suggestions , kind regards as always 👍
Thank you for the suggestions. I did countersink the bolt head, but I didn't think to paint them. I have since poured the resin and tape seems to have done the job and I will do an update on what it looks like. For the first 48 hours after pouring it looked great, but there are a few issues with it which you will see in the next video. Thank you for supporting the channel and watching the videos.
@@TheBoatVirgin hi sir glad all’s well , as for doing the project in the first place I take my hat off to you . Having watched numerous resin pores on UA-cam and seeing how things can go disastrously wrong , I don’t think you should worry too much about your results . As an amateur artist I’ve often considered applying this method to my work , but have always been somewhat hesitant in case two or three months work is wasted . But I’m probably by now, boring you to tears already . 😂 kind regards as always 👍
@@1x3dil always enjoy the comments. let me know what you think of the next video.
Is she back in the water yet and will you do another video of her sailing?
Yes, She is, and I will certainly speak to the owner and see if I can get some more video
Lovely looking boat. The interior was excellent that’s the type of boat, pity I can’t sail.
I agree, it is stunning. But the owner Mark, is not only an ace at sailing it, he is a master of running with the motor and it is just as effortless and beautiful under power. Take the plunge, you won't regret it.
That looks nice. I see it was also offered in a ketch rig.
I've no idea what that means, so I'll just say 'YES'
A proper sailers boat , and obviously a work in progress . But once again it highlights just how long these vessels can continue , and be passed on to live a new life when the time comes . And so enabling those who could enter hobby in the new sector , a chance to be part of the experience . Yes of course it comes with the need to be prepared to put in a lot of hard work , which I’m sure you both would attest to . But the rewards are beyond doubt . Kind regards to all 👍
My friend Mark who owns the boat has pumped a fair bit of money into it, but it is a labour of love. You just need that one perfect day to make it all worthwhile, which those of us fortunate to have boats, know all too well.
👍🏼 this weathers been foul for getting anything done outsides this year.. lets hope it picks up before the summers over and it starts getting dark earlier again.
absolutely, not managed to use my own boat much so far this year.
The deck looks amazing.
the whole boat is looking amazing from what it was.
Asking too much for the year and conditions....needs another 30,000 to bring up to date.
I think like all things in life, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One needs to also bear in mind that this boat will be sitting in mud for 18 hours a day, and when it is being used, it will be used for fishing. I think it is a great boat and now it it back in the water, it really looks purposeful.
Nice boat! But a bit of a project 😂 30k is too much.
I guess it depends on the additional funds available and what you want to do with it. The owner has updated the interior from what was originally there and now the next priority is new engines... I also know it has been recently surveyed for insurance purposes and the value has been massively hiked by the surveyor! Looks like secondhand brokerage values are still increasing.
FERROCEMENT!? He should have run, not walked away from a ferrocement boat!
It is coming along very nicely...I just need to get more video of it.
agree, i understand its not easy to even get insurance on one
Nice mate thank you
Thank you for letting me film it.
