We spend three days overlanding in the North Maine Woods, we entered through the Ashland checkpoint, and exited from Oxbow Electronic Gate. We saw the Ross Mountain fire lookout, as well as the Churchill Depot History Center, and the Red Pine air field. Visit joeverlanding.com/nmw-2024 to download the route we took and the route we had planned. This is all just for fun, and all free. #overlandi...

I didn't know milwaukee made penlights. I like how the light looked more of a warm yellow. I do a good bit work on large cnc machines and the more yellow of a light makes it easer to see the colors of wires, whereas a more blue light makes colors looked washed out. Great video, made a sub out of me.
Its "reality" road 😆
Nitecore makes great lights.
You sold me on the nitecore with the hat clip and memory function. Great video! Straight and to the point.
Thank you for watching! The Nitecore is yours if you want it, happy to send it on over, Send me a messege here↓ joeverlanding.com/pen-lights
Great video. Love the spot light. I’ve had a few coasts and I like them but have found the recharge function fails after about a year of constant use. But the coast I have now can be run off of AAA or rechargeable.
Thank you, I tend to lose them before they break, maybe I should have kept the orange one!
I’ll take the Orange One.
All yours! Thanks for watching!
I beat Dave!
You sure did and I'm not happy about it! 😂
@@DIESELLBZ HAHAHA Hi Dave!
Big Gees is c,losed
I know, terrible news, I loved it there.
Thinking about going out there tomorrow, I’ve heard a lot about that place, hopefully everything will go well
Did you get out there? I feel like I need to spend more time out there
@@joemcdonough326 unfortunately I didn’t, I run a taxi company so it gets hectic at times babysitting adults, I’m thinking maybe this weekend, do you go there often? Any info on the place would be greatly appreciated, Im hoping I’ll like it and make the trip a common occurrence
Big G’s is no more 😢
I'm broken hearted. It was the springing off point for all my Maine adventures. Many times I'd leave home at 5am to start with breakfast at Big G's at 8. I miss it for sure. Thank you for watching!
Putting down Miles! Lol
Looks like y’all had a good time. My wife and guide in that area and spend lots and lots of time around there. It never gets old!! I just came out of the woods last week and saw around 30 moose in 4days.
Wow! I have never seen that many, but it's every time I always see at least a few! I am hoping to head more north for the next visit. Thanks for watching!
Could you please elaborate
No
I haven't been out there in years, none of that was paved years ago.
Yooo Marco gotta be my favorite character 0:49
That sounds like it would be a great journey!
Hey thanks for showing video of all these. I've been staying south of most of these places with a group every year. Nice to be able to see some of the other sites without driving to them. Better to plan a trip!
Thank you for watching! This video is a bit more south, ua-cam.com/video/kQYd_IoLrx8/v-deo.html hope to head farther north next time! I made this because I wanted a tool to plan better trips, It's tough to settle on a spot when you don't know what the next one looks like.
I have lived here for 37 years..most of it just north of the last bright light in a night city light map...and I have never been to clayton lake. thanks for sharing, its kicking my motivation into gear. One hour from home for me is canadian border. Really silly. i have 4x4 truck, mtn bike, kayaks..barely go into the deep woods . The thing that scares me..every adventure even with modern mapping. There is stuff there in maps that is not passable, and stuff that does not exist (like a bridge). 2 years ago, I jumped my truck 4 feet off the ground on the golden road..45mph. Drove home with a bent cab mount and broken shock. Be careful. Go slow...and have a real 4x4.
Absolutely! A road can look great on a map, and be non existent in real life, bridges too. It's hard to plan a route because you don't know, but that can be part of the fun. I am hoping to go farther north next time I go up there.
Nice video. Looked like a great day with the fam
Is that the red pine camping area on the ST John river?
Yes, if you drop these coordinates in it will show you where, but that is the red pine campsite it's between the airstrip and the river. 46.5946944444, -69.7917777778 I think there was a pretty steep drop off between the campsite and the river.
@@joemcdonough326 i was there in the 70s it was never that nice it looks great👍😎🇺🇸
Thank you for the nice video.👍😎🇺🇸
Big G's is no more... Closed July 14. The Purple Cow will be a good substitute
Is that near a car wash? I think I went there a few years ago and it was very good, it was a Monday and Big G's was closed so I went there. I have also had a decent breakfasts at the Waterville Grand, Tina has taken care of my group for a couple years in a row there on Monday mornings.
@@joemcdonough326 Yes, in Fairfield right beside a car wash.
@@MichaelPicher43 Yes, that's what I thought, I had an excellent breakfast there 3 Romps ago, thank you for the name of the place!
Just got the news that big G’s has closed. Gonna be missed at the next romp
Devastating! Romp will be different for sure. Also it was a nice break in the drive to the North Maine Woods. I'll miss it, my daughter always knew I would bring her home some giant cookies every Winter Romp.
It should be a national forest
I agree, it's all owned by paper companies now, and hopefully the way things are can continue, but I would hate to see the North Maine Woods become anything but natural woodlands. Thanks for watching.
Great video Joe, thank you for doing it.
Thanks for watching!
Nice trip! What percentage would you need 4X4?
You wouldn't need 4x4 at all, I would be more worried about a tire puncture. If it was rainy or snowy that could change, but I think a 2 wheel drive with nice tires would be all you need to get out there.
@@joemcdonough326 Good info, thanks!
Drones are not allowed! Your ticket will be mailed. Don't come back!
I hope to go there soon ...Thanks for the video..!!
I absolutely love it there, I’m hoping to go back in the Fall.
Great adventure guys. Thanks for putting it up.
Great job on the video guys. I enjoyed every second of it. The narration was perfect. You did a lot of leg work for us that would follow. The NMW is a great natural resource so always be respectful and keep it clean.
Thank you! I am always happy to see that people do leave it clean, the very small amount of trash I’ve come across genuinely seems accidental. Thank you!
The airstrip is obviously for fly in paddlers on the St John River
NOTICE HOW CLEAN IT IS. LETS ALL KEEP IT THAT WAY. THANK YOU.
Loved your video, take my grandsons there many times in the summer, the boys love it, we buy the season camping pass, so we spend most of the summer up there, thank for the good footage. Spent a lot of my younger day there cutting wood.
@@robertberry1033 lucky kids!
OMG....you fly anywhere near an airstrip and its like a $27k fine.
Regardless of fines, I'd just hate to be flying, and then hear a plane, then look around for that, lose sight of the drone,, and anything could happen. At that point, anyone would prefer any fine to what that accident could look like. The FAA seems to have a list of Airports you can't fly near, and those not on the list like this one have much more relaxed rules, that being said, I won't be flying there again.
I noticed you have the Seasucker roto pack adapters, any issues? I just bought the roof rack for my 2013 LR4. Nice video and I’m not a purest overlander, I’d like to keep it stock and certainly don’t want to scratch the paint which is pristine. Thanks for sharing!
Hi, I’ve never had an LR4, I had a 3 for a while and went lots of places in it. The Seasuckers/rotopax mounts are nice, very secure, it says to Mount them vertically, but I had no issues mounting them horizontally on the roof. I pumped them every day, but usually they didn’t need it. If pumping them doesn’t make sense it will once you use them. I also modified one to take my radio antenna so now that is completely removable too. Once they’re on and pumped they are solid, maybe too solid, id bet I would lose the window before they let go. I agree with stock, especially for overlanding, I did a lot to make my LR3 “better”, bigger tires, compressor, skids, steel bumpers, tire carrier, rack, and it became a heavy less comfortable place to spend time. I’m trying to keep this D5 as comfy as possible. There’s virtually no overlanding near me, so everything is lots of highway before the dirt.
Great video Joe!
The building at the end of the runway at Red Pines isn't an outhouse. Its a well house. Don't poop in it.
I didnt, but that is good info to know, looks brand new
Hate to tell ya, Eagle Lake is nowhere near Ashland. That gate is in Garfield.
Yes, 6 Mile is in Garfield for sure, I was looking up stuff for the next trip, and left my google earth in the wrong in spot. I'm thinking about St Francis or Winterville, so I may have to find a spot to stay in Eagle lake, because that's a long drive for me.
More dogs on dirt roads! ❤
Great video! I'd like to check out the NMW someday. Maybe in the fall
I may try to get back up there in the fall, send me a message if you want to stay in touch - joeverlanding.com Scroll down for the "contact us"
Love the video! In your opinion, can a Rav4 make it in the NMW? Is 4x4 absolutely necessary? Would like to visit the NMW. Thanks
The roads in the North Maine Woods are rough, but four wheel drive is not necessary, I would be mostly concerned with tires. The roads are made with logging trucks in mind, and there or lots of rocks, and holes that sneak up on you. I think a Rav4 with good tires would have no issues, just make sure you have enough fuel. The roads in this video are on private property, called the Sebasticook Millennium Green, and it is a few hours south of the North Maine Woods
May I ask what you’re using for digital mapping in the NMW? I’m just using the gazetteer at this point and want to have something more. Thanks
Hello, so I use two apps. One is Avenza Maps with the Delorme Gazetteer loaded in there, you can buy the official gazetteer from the store in the Avenza maps app. And the other is Gaia with the overlanding Topo layer. Both can be downloaded to the device so you don’t need service for them to work. I also keep a printed gazetteer with me. The other vehicle had a Garmin Tread XL. It was pretty cool, seemed to have the same roads as the gazetteer, which makes sense I think Garmin owns Delorme who publishes the Gazetteer. It is expensive but it was nice, it had all the roads loaded in and the ability to send a message via satellite. It’s pricey but could be worth it depending on how often you get out into the woods. It’s important to say that no resource is perfect. Gaia, Garmin, the official NMW map, all didn’t have roads that were there in real life, and also had roads that were no longer passable, or seemingly nonexistent. All had bridges on the map, but the bridge was actually out. I like the fun of having to replan on the fly, and I guess these roads grow in so fast it’s impossible to keep a map updated, I think the Gazetteer is King up there, but not perfect.
Just stumbled across this video and know every campsite you visited. But the 2nd Musquacook lake campsite is very special place for my Family. Paul R Pelletier was my brother and seeing his plaque in the video made my day. Miss him dearly every day . Thank you for sharing . So awesome to see as we live 450 miles south.
I am glad you guys have that, it's a beautiful spot. Your brother was way too young, I googled him and found his obituary, it was an honor to be in a place honoring a fellow Lowellian.
@joemcdonough326 Thank You Joe. The 2nd Musquacook Lake was campsite was one of Paul's favorite places to be. His best Friend Tom Ryan built on that lake and Paul spent many weekends helping Tom. Also Big Machais lake holds a family camp presently since late 80s . Our Uncles use to park a converted Bus at Squirrel pond in the late 50s when the deer were plentiful. Lot of Pelletier History in those woods. But most of all Thank you again for that beautiful video it was a bitter sweet moment when I saw the plaque. Enjoy the North Woods Joe. No other place like it.

Limb Risers would be handy for a road like this
Great comparison video, and I liked how the video ended! 🥢
Im going to go to the Winter Romp, then go for some Chinese, then go back!
Great video once again. Thank you for sharing!
Does anything rattle in the case?
I am glad you asked, I meant to cover this in the video, but forgot. It doesn't rattle at all, even if I shake it, or put it next to me in the car, or shake it again, it's 100% rattle free in all situations I have encountered..
Nice that the set includes the 16 mm a lot do not . Great video love the straight to the point well done !
Yes it does, Deep and shallow.
