one year of youtube: if you don’t quit, you might make it.
I’ll start with this: It’s been one hell of a year.
Posting that first UA-cam video may have been one of my better life decisions to date. Since starting UA-cam just over a year ago (October 19, 2023), I’ve grown so much creatively and personally.
In this video, I’ll share tips that helped me start my channel and main learnings from the year, show you some of my analytics, and the amount I made after getting monetized towards the end of the year.
Hopefully this sparks some ideas to help you out if you just started, or if you were wanting to start maybe this will give you the push you need.
I’m having a lot of fun making these and am looking forward to continue creating. I really appreciate the support from you all!

    • @flonought

      That’s not something I’ve noticed. The only thing I’ve noticed between the two that I have, the 70 and 46 both in Paperbark Gray, is that the 46’s mattress is softer so you sink in a little more; I haven’t slept on that one yet. I would say both have you sitting pretty upright with your back slightly tilted back. I typically gravitate towards the 70 when I’m going to be sitting for a while.

    The way developers lay out apartments makes me think they’ve never lived in one. That closet is ridiculously tiny, especially compared to the larger-than-necessary bathroom and kitchen. Studio apartments need storage space more than they need a giant stove with four burners.

    • @flonought
      @flonought 3 дні тому

      I do agree with you about most apartment layouts, however I actually think this one is layed out fairly well. I agree, the “closet” is a joke, but the cabinet space in the bathroom makes up for the lack of closet space. I agree with you about the bathroom, if that was smaller it could free up more living/kitchen/bedroom space which would have made it easier to better fit a bed or position the closet elsewhere. In some studios now I’m seeing a built-in murphy bed system that’s integrated with the closet too (similar to the row of cabinets look of the kitchen). I think that’s pretty convenient because then you wouldn’t even have to hassle with anything for a bed other than the mattress. For the kitchen though, I actually like the shotgun style width of the room. There is more storage than I would ever use, and the four burner stovetop really doesn’t get in the way since it’s almost flush with the counter.

      For sure, there’s definitely better deals out there. It really comes down to what you as a person are looking for and your specific lifestyle needs. At this point in my life, I don’t value/care for a large amount of space; for me it just adds more room for stuff I don’t need. I place much more value on walking proximity to things (grocery store, work, etc.), natural light, nice gym, and in unit washer dryer.

    • @flonought
      @flonought 5 днів тому

      @@TheRealvisionz Personally, I don’t like those. Usually I can feel the frame, they make the sofa in general much heavier (which is a bitch for moving), and usually there ends up being some kind of squeak. I can usually handle those at an Airbnb for a few nights, but there’s no way I would have one as a full time bed solution. If you didn’t watch my follow up review, I linked it below. I go into more detail about the crease. I did start to notice it, but I show a quick and easy solution that eliminated the small discomfort I was having from that. The quick answer is I move the mattress up about a fist’s width away from the back of the sofa ua-cam.com/video/57JiAt_Y4EM/v-deo.htmlsi=fKQnyguA4ImwGEY0

    Thanks for the transparency and great video. New subscriber here. Wow your finances are so simple. I think it’s bc you have minimal debt. You are very disciplined. I grew up in an upper middle class family in the Midwest. Where it seemed like “money grew on trees” however my parents were very good with money and saved but spent as well. Life definitely has taught me that you must be intentional and of course money indeed does not grow on trees. I am on the get out of debt journey now. Watching your videos about minimalism makes me think that I could go on that path- I would need to get rid of a heck of a lot of stuff.

    • @flonought
      @flonought 14 днів тому

      Thank you, and welcome to the channel! I completely understand, I grew up with very similar environments around me; I would say my family was upper middle class too. If you feel comfortable sharing, how old are you and what's your main source of debt? Do you have a plan for how long you think it'll take to get out of it? Being intentional with your money is so important, and minimalism for me has been crucial with that. It let me to start asking the question, "how does this thing (whatever it is) bring me value?" When I first got into minimalism in 2017-ish (finding Matt D'Avella on UA-cam was my spark), that was my biggest takeaway. I think it's less about removing things in general, and more so about removing things you don't actually use. I realized I had all of these things - physical and digital - that were just taking up space/time that brought me no value; clothes I didn't wear, doomscrolling on apps, furniture that just filled up a room, etc. By removing those things I noticed an immediate shift in my overall happiness and in a sense a weight that was lifted. You learn to stop wanting what you don't have, and start recognizing/appreciating what you do.

    Parking a car for $270 is absolutely ridiculous, but living in a $1750-a-month studio with no central air is mind-boggling. I don't mind spending 1750 a month for a one bedroom but that would also include central air

    • @flonought
      @flonought 16 днів тому

      For the parking, I agree it’s expensive. No part of me wanted to bring my car to have it sit and be essentially throwing that money away every month (i don’t have a need for a car here). I disagree somewhat there. I think that really comes down to you as a person. I don’t mind small spaces so to me that part doesn’t matter, and this apartment has a very nice layout compared to my last apartment; at 419 sqft this apartment feels bigger than my previous 540 sqft studio in St. Louis. As for the air conditioning, that’s not a make or break for me either. I initially thought the same thing, but after living in Seattle for a few months I’ve realized AC isn’t necessary here. The price is somewhat more than I would like to pay, but the amenities (that I actually use) and location are a huge factor. Relative to my salary it makes sense for me currently.

      I love a good leather sofa, it just keeps building more character the more time goes on. And I really appreciate ya watching! I will say after all the research I did, and I looked at more sofa beds than I wanted to online, it’s definitely within the price range of what else is out there. You can get cheaper ones for sure, but I would guess the comfort level and quality would not be there for everyday use.

      😆 Hell yeah, I appreciate it! Maybe I'll get ya interested in the minimalism content because it really applies to so many things in life. It is one of the things that really changed how I live my life in every aspect; a shift to spending more time focusing on what brings you value and learn to not waste energy on what doesn't. Street Photography is something I'm still working on creating long form content for but I have some ideas that should be fun. And I have some more tattoos planned that I'm stoked for. This first year has really been about experimenting with topics I love in my daily life, and putting them out there to connect with like-minded people.

    Pseudo-futons were popular in the 1990s (go have a look at what Peer One was, and how much we loved paper lanterns.). Yet they were stigmatized as a thing convenient for students; you wouldn't want them in your adult life. We don't like mattresses flat on the floor. And the frames which tri-fold into a low couch looked like you had the seat of an old Ford in your living room. We didn't have the tatami rooms. We had pine frames, or none at all. The mats were stuffed with fiber, and the fiber crushed permanently. The pseudo-futons were also twice the thickness of Japanese futons because they weren't supported by the spring of a tatami floor. The weight discouraged you from putting it away daily.

    • @flonought
      @flonought 19 днів тому

      😆 yes, I do remember those because I had one growing up; I'm a 90s kid. Our futon was super heavy and was on a pine frame. But I totally agree, those were a pain in the ass to put away.

    I like the overal idea of a murphy bed, but modernized. You hit a button on your phone, it retracts into the wall, and when it's up, it reveals a sofa that goes down into a compartment in the floor when not in use. That way, you don't have to mess with the sheets and blanket every time. I don't think this exists the way I wish it did, but it could 😂

    • @flonought
      @flonought 22 дні тому

      Oh I totally agree with you! Those designs are pretty incredible for small spaces. This is a modernized example similar to what you're talking about/may have been picturing in your head; ignore the rent pricing and all that, but looking at this just from a concept standpoint this place is pretty cool. ua-cam.com/video/hDCNaJKd4gU/v-deo.html

    I didn’t move to Seattle until I got here, but I figured if it didn’t work out, I would roll on down to Portland (which I also love) but ten years later, I am still here! Street art here is incredible but strangely murals are kinda mid. If I may ask how is a minimalist also into cars? I can respect someone who into vehicle tech and design, a “carguy,” as it were but one thing Seattle does not need is more cars. The Seattle Freeze does exist but it is a more complicated social phenomenon than what is reported. (But you got a friend in me, Brad!) Look into your lease and see what it says about pets. Seattle is incredibly pet friendly and having a dog or cat/s is a great way to meet people especially girls since you mentioned the ex. Which is fine but keep in mind that the LBGTQ+ community here probably rivals Chicago in size and scope. There’s plenty of ladies looking for quality gents like yourself in this town. Also there’s plenty of volunteer groups here so look into getting involved. I look forward to running into you and your camera some time!

    • @flonought
      @flonought 24 дні тому

      That's awesome! I'm glad to hear it's worked out for you. And to answer the car question, it's more so an appreciate for the driving experience on a great S turn road, car design, and a love for older manual transmission sports cars. But to your point, I'm currently in the process of selling my car; it's not with me here in Seattle. I gave myself some time to evaluate if one was needed or not, and since everything is within walking distance for me it would have been a complete waste of money to have the car here. I appreciate that! haha I have not found the Seattle Freeze to be true since being here so far. I keep joking with my friends at home that I have made more friends here since July than I hung out with in STL. When you're in the same city for a long time you get comfortable (at least I did). The biggest thing was learning how to just go out on my own to places, and take the time to introduce myself. Once that happened people have been quite friendly and conversational. People just seem to be more in their own zone with headphones in when walking around in the city; it's a nice change of pace from some of the BS small talk you get in the midwest or the need to smile at everyone that walks by (I still do that out of habit 🤓). I’ve been taking a break from dating for a while to really work on myself, focus on the move to Seattle, the UA-cam channel, and honestly just the peace and quiet of being in your own. And now that I’ve taken some time, dating is definitely a goal/focus of mine for next year. I'm excited to out myself out there again. And for sure, if you ever see me around feel free to introduce yourself!
