First Dialogue of George Berkeley's Three Dialogues
In this lecture, I focus on the first of George Berkeley's Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous. I also make the briefest reference to section 3 of Part I of Berkeley's A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge.

This lecture covers Leibniz's Monadology (building on our earlier discussion of Leibniz's Discourse on Metaphysics) and the last chapter of his theodicy.
Leibniz's Discourse on Metaphysics
Переглядів 19421 день тому
In this lecture, I discuss G. W. Leibniz's Discourse on Metaphysics. As I claim in the lecture, I find this text to be primarily about how agency is possible, that is, how an individual substance can be distinct enough from the rest of the universe to be a true initiator of action.

In this lecture, I discuss Margaret Cavendish's work, focusing on her Observations Upon Experimental Philosophy while drawing just a bit on some of her other work.
Meditation II, Part A
Переглядів 50Місяць тому
This lecture covers Meditation II up to the point at which Descartes starts to discuss the piece of wax. Positively, then, it covers Descartes's argument that "I am, I exist" is completely certain whenever thought or uttered, and it covers his argument that the "I" is essentially a thinking thing. We will cover the so-called wax meditation (his thoughts about the piece of wax at the end of Medi...

This video summarizes the content, particularly the arguments, presented in the first meditation in Descartes's Meditations on First Philosophy.
Supplement/Addendum to Background Video
Переглядів 25Місяць тому
I did not say exactly what I wanted to say about the Cartesian Coordinate system in my video on the background to Descartes's Meditations. So, here is an addendum in which I state more precisely what I meant. I am sorry for any redundancy.
Background on Descartes's Meditations
Переглядів 56Місяць тому
In this video, I go over some of the intellectual and historical background that is most salient to Descartes's Meditations on First Philosophy. I emphasize the work of Aristotle, Copernicus, and Galileo, though I also have something to say about St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Spinoza's Ethics, Parts III, IV, and V
Переглядів 50Місяць тому
This lecture covers the last three parts of Spinoza's Ethics. As I say in the lecture, these parts make it clear how this is a book of ethics. They tell us something about what human life is like (primarily, we are subject to passions) and how to comport ourselves and pursue the good, under the constraints of human existence that Spinoza describes.
Spinoza's Ethics, Part II
Переглядів 50Місяць тому
In this lecture, I discuss Part II of Spinoza's Ethics. More specifically, I discuss at length what the human mind is (per Spinoza) and how it is connected (or, certainly, operates in parallel with) a specific human body.
Spinoza's Ethics, Part I
Переглядів 59Місяць тому
In this lecture, I give a bit of historical background on Spinoza, then discuss Part I of his Ethics. I concentrate on his monism and his definitions of substance, attribute, and mode. I have a lot to say about Spinoza's determinism as well, and about how he addresses the mind-body problem.
Locke's Conception of the Will
Переглядів 66Місяць тому
In this lecture, I articulate Locke's conception of the will, along with his conception of liberty or freedom. I explain why Locke believes the question of whether our wills are free is insignificant (or meaningless). Along the way, we learn about Locke's conception of good and evil and we outline a Lockean conception of weakness of will.
First Lecture on Book II of Locke's Essay
Переглядів 51Місяць тому
In this lecture I cover chapters 1 through 11 from Book II of Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, occasionally making references to Descartes and (just a little bit) to issues in contemporary phenomenology.
Locke Essay Book I

This lecture is on Book I of John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. It goes over the point and origin of the book, and then grapples with Locke's arguments against innate ideas and principles.
Correspondence between Elisabeth and Descartes, 1645-1646
Переглядів 632 місяці тому
This is my second lecture on the correspondence between these two thinkers. This lecture is focused on letters from the years 1645-1646. In these letters, we see Descartes provide an overview of what the good and happy life is for a human being, while we see Princess Elisabeth make trouble for this view, particularly by insisting on our human limitations.

Great work, thanks a lot
Thanks for great content. It will be more helpful if you provided with powerpoint or something like that.
@@zayaricon I believe that’s accurate. I’ve experimented with using PowerPoints, and it’s a lot of extra work. I hope that next semester, with these lectures already produced, I can make some newer versions that involve PowerPoint presentations. I’ll already have extensive notes and even the transcripts of these lectures to help me at that point. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you sir for uploading this. I had just finished reading the book myself and I was wondering whether I had taken the right ideas out of the text. God would be evil if He acted how Leibniz described (God permits evil for a greater good). That would mean God is treating rational beings, at times, as mere means. I still struggle to understand how a contingent but predetermined act could still be called a free act. It also seemed to me like the body-mind connection was only superficially presented. Nevertheless it was a fascinating read, especially the parts about the whole universe being virtually contained in every substance, and rational beings expressing God.
Happy Diwali Professor. I love your content. Keep making these videos. Thank you for all the effort.
@@arunray2986 Happy Diwali to you as well! May your days be bright! I enjoy making the videos, so I plan to keep at it. 😃
Thanks for the clear explanation. You deserve more subscribers
My example of perceiving the sun is discussed by Cavendish herself in her _Philosophical Letters_ of 1664 (p. 83). I came across it in David Cunning's discussion in his "Margaret Lucas Cavendish" (2022), an entry in the _Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy_ <plato.stanford.edu/entries/margaret-cavendish/>.
Likening the way "spirits" are supposed to be involved in Leibniz's idealistic metaphysical system to the way concrete human beings are actually involved in online multiplayer video games was suggested to me by John Perry's _Dialogue on Consciousness: Minds, Brains, and Zombies_, published by Hackett in 2018.
That was pretty interesting!
Thanks for your feedback!
Russel Crowe vibes
