Sugarloaf & Spaulding - Carrabasset Valley, Maine | Hiking Two Maine 4000 Footers in Peak Foliage
On October 4th, 2024 I set out with Ash, Wilkie, and my Father-in-law Tony to continue our journey bagging the @AppalachianMountainClub New England 67 Four-Thousand Footers!
We timed our trip just right with the Fall Foliage this year, and it was peaking in Maine's Carrabasset Valley at the exact time of our trip, and it's easy to see that in the video! We opted to hike Sugarloaf and Spaulding from the ski slopes of the Sugarloaf Ski Resort which was a short but very steep route up to open summit of Sugarloaf gaining about 2750' in just 2.2 miles. From there it was a hike down the spur trail to the Appalachian Trail south to the spur that would take us to Spaulding, and we retraced our route from here. The whole route was around 10 miles and over 4000' of elevation gain. We had a great day out hiking together, outstanding views (from Sugarloaf anyways), and it was a memorable outing for sure. This makes for 60/67 of the AMC New England 67 Four-Thousand Footers for Ash and I!

On September 12th 2024 the family and I headed up to Keene Valley for a much needed return to the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. Sunset in Joshua Tree National Park from Ryan Mountain | Hiking in the Mojave Desert of California

On our last night in Joshua Tree, Ash and I found a premier spot for sunset on Ryan Mountain. This is a very popular mountain to hike in the park and we were shocked to find the summit completely empty on a Friday night! This had to be some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen, and the sunset was absolutely amazing. Coming from the Northeast, the desert really is something, and this was...

quite authentic cover, using just one one guitar. Excellent guitar play.Though the singing could be a bit more straight, not trying so emulate those overly emotional singers on UA-cam.

Thanks! Really enjoyed this day, love the Sandwich Range Wilderness! Will do and thanks for watching and the sub!
T25! Yay 🎉 This one looks fun! How many sections did you have to skip because it was wet? Thanks for the info (beta) on the slide section 😊.
Sure thing! Yes definitely type 2 fun! We didn't find it particularly "terrifying", just sketchy because of the conditions (which I think is the usual state of this trail) but definitely a good workout...there were maybe 2-3 sections of ledge we had to just avoid because of either our boots being too wet/muddy to safely get grip on the smooth ledge or where the ledge was just too wet/mossy with flowing water to get any grip. It was a beautiful trail down below before the slide too! We suspected maybe it had rained a little the night before based on things looking wet in the woods but not positive...as with most of these I couldn't imagine descending it, even with holding onto trees you'd be in a controlled slide once you hit the steep bit. I had to put my camera away on some of the nastier portions, mostly didn't want to tempt myself to lose a hold to save my camera from hitting something. Came close once and was like this is stupid put the camera away!
@@nick__in__nature Thanks for the info! Sheesh, glad you didn’t try to continue filming during those parts. I’ll have to bring my helmet with the GoPro mount lol. A climber told me if I angle the camera all the way down it will show what I’m doing instead of the rocks in front of my face. I think I’ll try that! Ty!!
@AmandaDouin sounds like a great idea! Looking forward to seeing how that comes out 😀
@@nick__in__nature I had pretty much the same experience when I hiked this one last fall. It definitely didn't help to have a fair bit of fallen leaves trapping some moisture in places where I wish there had been more traction, but even without the leaves, I thought the rock itself had a smoother texture than a lot of the open slab where friction climbing is easier (like the summit of North Percy). It got into my head quite a bit that I couldn't really trust my footing like I usually do on a climb like this. All told, I think I only had to skip 2 sections of slab where I either couldn't reach the handhold I would need (I'm 5'6") and/or my footing was too slick. All things considered, I still really enjoyed this trail in hindsight, but not so much in the moment. Which I guess makes it the literal definition of "type 2 fun"...
@ThatFrigonHiker o boy that doesn't sound like it would be fun in the Fall with wet leaves! Agreed that I think there are much steeper slabs in the Whites that are a lot more grippy! We had the exact same feeling, moss and everything was wet...but also enjoyed it...for sure "type 2 fun"! We actually watched a hiker in front of us that you can see in one spot where Ash is observing further up shimmy across and back down in that spot you see ahead. We both tried to go up that spot and coupled with being behind someone (didn't want to rush them) I was unable to get any traction going up by the arrow, same with Ash...that got the adrenaline going a bit probably more than any other spot. If it was dry/grippy I really don't think any of it was that ridiculous especially being in the trees...alas I don't think it's ever dry and grippy! The fact that every now and then you hear about people going down this trail willingly blows my mind...at best you'd be clinging on in spots in a controlled slip.
Beautiful hike! Great soundtrack. I love the group hikes you go on! 😊 I need to get more group hikes together.
Thanks! This was a super fun day and hadn't gotten out with this whole crew in a bit so it was great to share the day together! Feel free to reach out if you're ever looking for a buddy! Also logistically it's nice to have other people to film instead of having to setup the camera to film yourself and that whole deal which I know you are very familiar with!

Nice video. Snow Mountain is a hidden gem in the Adirondacks. I’ve never done it winter. I hiked up the Deer Brook Trail, which was a beautiful route.
Thanks for watching! Cool, we were staying at Trail's End Inn and my sister-in-law and her boyfriend were staying at Rooster Comb so we were able to just walk over to the trailhead near the pond/school. I am guilty of not having checked out much other than the High Peaks themselves, I'm sure there must be a ton of these smaller mountains with fantastic views.
Did Mount Pierce on 2/24/2024. Same view, but I saw about 20 small children hiking up with some adults. I was stoked they made it to the top. ❤
Very cool, it’s a great first hike to get the younglings up for sure! Stinks you didn’t get a view but that’s the mountains for ya! Just encourages you to get up there again and score some views 😉
I really enjoyed your adventure! Keep going!
Thanks for watching!!!
Nice hike! Great that you were able to stay on top of the snow for the most part. I’m ready for shoulder season to be over. 😊
Thanks!!! For sure, there was one section where we could've used them but it was pretty well broken out for the first 1/2 mile or so and we felt comfy leaving them. Lol I feel like this entire winter has been on and off shoulder season, wouldn't mind NOT wearing snowshoes or spikes soon...not gonna lie.
Your winter camping adventure looks like a dream! It's reminiscent of my own recent journey into the snowy wilderness. Nature truly is the best playground, especially in the winter. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks for liking and subscribing! We had a great day despite the lack of views!
Sick! Also cool that you hit up silver cascade and flume cascade, those were (some of) the waterfalls I photographed last memorial day that I put up on my Instagram!!
Yea they’re nice and easy to get to…had checked them out after a rainstorm 2 Octobers ago and they were epic! Thanks buddy!
Thanks for sharing your hike!
Of course! Thanks for watching!
You went up the round pond entrance? We did that loop in july, did the whole traverse of 4 mountains and went down the trail at south dix side which was a brutal trail because it would end and we would have to look for the continuation of it, it messed with us several times and i was getting upset, it's not a well marked trail going down south dix side. Going up dix though was wonderful, we all enjoyed it and it was amazing up there, thanks for letting me revisit the hike from that path again.
Yeap, came in from that side! Very cool, thanks for sharing, sounds like it was memorable to say the least! Really enjoyed Dix, will probably grab the other peaks from the Macomb side when I get back or plan a long out and back day. The traverse idea seems very cool, did you come down from Macomb or the Lilian Brook Trail from South Dix? I know the trails in between on the range are technically herd paths and not necessarily maintained so was curious what it looks like up there. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for taking the time to watch and sharing your experience, love connecting with other hikers!
@@nick__in__nature - We went down Boquet Forks Trail on east dix, it wasn't well marked, we almost got lost at a couple areas because the trail would end at a creek, or before rocks and we had to search for the other side and it really messed with us at times and we were so tired as it was to play games like that. We got close to the exit when it got dark and we slept near the creek in a sandy spot. We skipped mccomb because we figured we could just do it separately at another time. The whole traverse was nice though, loved the trail we took going up, Boquet Forks Trail was brutal though but people do go up that way, i wouldn't.
@@nick__in__nature - The paths in between the mountains weren't bad, some sketchy parts but im a monkey when climbing so wasn't a big deal for me. The paths were very muddy though, like you need to hop rocks to get to other side. I actually wanted to go up elk lake trailhead but that was another 45 minutes from our campsite.
@@nick__in__nature - I need to correct myself after looking at the names of the trails more, we did not go down lilian brook, we went down Boquet Forks Trail off east dix, my bad i should of looked at the map.
As I imagine hearing this epic cry echoing at sunrise near my campsite from the edge of a steep cliff I also imagine swallowing my annoyance at having been woken & broken toe by me damned what evening’s drunkenness earned successfully tempted climb I to the top’s edge & grabbing somebody’s foot haul I myself up at the last chorus only to lean over the edge & spit & realize I have ruined my coffee & turning to the wind I call it a liar for clearly there was a chance & it found me. I don’t know how but it found me. I run for it smartly as others hike. Scene.
very cool
What a beautiful crispy day!! The trails were so pretty! I Need South still! You were pretty much alone all day it seemed..? Thank you for braving those temps and filming for us. 🤗
Haha yes crisp to say the least! Was a little bummed out that the snow/fog moved in on the Kinsmans but it was still a really fun day :) the views from Bald Peak earlier in the day made up for it. So I crossed 2 others on the Kinsman Ridge Trail, everyone was moving quickly so had some quick chats and moved on. They both were traversing over the Kinsmans and Cannon with carspots, then I crossed a couple with their dog back at the trailhead that had just gone up to Bald Peak. Would say I was alone for about 99% of the day for sure!
Thanks for watching and the feedback as always!!!
Beautiful falls! I’ve never seen them frozen.. Great day up there, hoping to tag Chocorua in a couple months. 😊
Yes it was really cool seeing them all frozen and wintry, had seen them not frozen as it was June last time I was up there. Liked the frozen vibes more and also nobody there 😉 yes the weather was perfect 👌🏻 Chocorua is such a great mountain and Middle Sister and First Sister have fantastic views as well. Lots to explore! Need to get back for the T25 in the least and I’d love to try a traverse from Ferncroft over Paugus to Chocorua sometime. The areas are connected by the Beeline trail.
Great video. Keep sharing!
Thank you! Will do!
Very nicely done.
Thanks!
sick, such a hard song to sing and play at the same time!! nailed it!!
Thanks!!!
What a good sport your little girl was. ❤ It was cute how she was peeking out from under her hood as you hiked. :) Perfect weather. How many of the 52 do you have left?
Yes she did pretty great, got a little fussy on the summit because she wanted to get out and walk, obviously not a great place to do that lol. She feel asleep literally about 10 minutes into the hike down and slept a good chunk of the way home. 4 left, North/South Baldface, Eagle Crag, and Eastman. I think I may try to get Eastman out of the way but the other 3 I will be saving for the final hike when things warm up again. There is a T25 up the Baldfaces I'd like to hit doing them and it's the preferred route, not recommended in Winter. Technically you could tag Eastman onto that hike too but Eastman may shape up for a hike on its own before we hit calendar Winter. Thanks for watching as always!
Such a great place to explore. Enjoyed watching your awesome video guys!
Yes a beautiful little mountain and perfect family hike! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!

@@nick__in__nature nice! Did Magalloway in September, full cloud soup. Did Stinson in October, overcast but a nice hike!
@@PatrickSmart603 that's unfortunate! Definitely one to get back to, yes had the little one with us so Stinson fit the bill perfectly. Third time I've been up there and never gets old, love the easy going vibe of that hike and relatively low crowd factor.
Great job! Not an easy song to cover, but you did it justice. It's a shame your good taste in music doesn't transfer over to NFL teams... ;)
Thanks for the kind words :) glad I did it justice, had been wanting to learn that little riff for a while, have always loved this song. Hahaha, ain't that the truth ;)
Great job
Thanks!!! May be working on some other Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs soon ;)
This one seemed pretty steep. I wish there was an easier way to really show the slope in video..
Yes it’s always tough to get that perspective. Have noticed sometimes with something close in the foreground helps. It’s only 1.8 miles RT and 800’ from the actual parking area. The coot trail was fairly steep and washed out in parts but bobcat was pretty mellow.
Nice work and great hike! Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks!!! It was great to get back to the Adirondacks and really lucked out with the weather, would've been nice to see The Great Range with Marcy and what not but I have 0 complaints :)
Great filming my friend, this looks amazing! 👏👏
Thanks!!! Means a lot coming from you! Your videos always look spectacular!!!
Thanks for giving the soundtrack reference as well. NICE! Thanks for the video as well; one of the four we have left.
Of course! I spend a decent amount of time look for music that works for these video edits so try to give credit. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching, glad I could provide some insight into what the hike looks like! Congrats on being 48/52! I am currently at 46/52 with Shelburne Moriah, Middle Sister, Eastman, Eagle Crag, and the Baldfaces remaining. Hoping to finish on the Baldfaces with Eagle Crag and maybe Eastman. Happy hiking!
High quality video. I love the shadowing mountains in the last part. BTW, I have a small suggestion you might have noticed as well, you don't need to be so nervous facing the camera, haha. Great work!
Thanks! Still relatively new to making these and definitely getting more comfortable as time goes on 😉
Great trip Nick! Beautiful autumn colors and incredible views up there. I really like the vibe of your production. Fa fantastic work man!
Thanks, appreciate it! Really lucked out hitting just about peak foliage up there that weekend 🍁👌🏻
Well done mate. Wow. Tuning? Chords? Masterful cover. New subscriber.
Thanks man and thanks for the subscribe! It's basically standard tuning just tuned down a half step. You can mess around with variations of the chords and walking down to different ones or whatever, but structure is mostly as follows IMO... Verse: Em C G Pre Chorus: Em C G then Em C Em Am (Am on "We get no reply..." for ex.) Chorus: Em D Em D G Am D (hammer down on that D before swapping to Em) Bridge: G D G D Am (where the "You are not alone"s start) G C G Am Should get you started, find what works for you and thanks again for listening!
thank you for the detailed reply. appreciate it. @@nick__in__nature
@@myguydudebro8880 you got it, good luck!
Thank you for showing what this trail is really like bottom to top. I’ve been putting this one off bc what I read suggests that the erosion makes it an unpleasant or especially difficult hike. I think you showed a few challenges, but that the summit views are well worth it. Tremont has moved up a bunch of positions on my “soon” list.
My pleasure, it was a beautiful trail, especially the lower portion with all the cascades. Yes I've definitely heard a few people putting it off until later for that reason, for me it's been more the long car ride for a "shorter" hike. Usually I try to be hiking as long as the car ride at least. I've been wanting to save it for the end of an overnight trip or something but finally just decided to go for it. I've definitely heard many tales of this hike being quite the punch but I really didn't think it was as much of a grind as some people make it out to be...maybe I was just in a good hiking mood that day. The views were fantastic, I really lucked out because all of Crawford Notch was totally clouded as I drove up and the rest of the higher summits were clouded on the way back home from the Presis to Franconia Notch. Thanks for watching and glad it bumped up Tremont on your "soon" list, happy hiking!
