Jeep JK rear shock relocation and other new bits.
Переглядів 2121 день тому
I'm getting a set of JKS rear shock relocation brackets installed on the 2010 Wrangler JKU. It's also getting some new shocks and adjustable sway bar end links. Also I hope everyone gets a good laugh out of my poor plasma cutting skills and parts ordering woes. A quick review of the cheapest sleeve hitch I could find for my Craftsman GT50 garden tractor. This fits other brands produced on the same AYP frame as well. I made one this week. I have a Kubota bx with two vertical holes in the top side of the ROPS. My ROPS clear the door by 1/4”, so my canopy needed to be below the ROPS. I used 1/2” steel tube and welded it with 3/16” stringers for canvas support. I added 1/6” steel wings 9” out at the operator seat. I converted a usb fan for my 12v seat plug and made a bracket for it. Works as planned, canvas is a little wonky but not too bad. Interesting to see how we employ different skills for our needs.

    I'm a little worried I might have to bleed my MC after replacing my hub (I'm stupid and never worked on or near brakes and did a lot of shit I shouldn't have), so in terms of difficulty, how hard would you say removing the MC is? It didn't look all that bad from the video. Roughly how long did it take you?

    • @Chumley360
      @Chumley360 5 місяців тому

      Removing the MC isn't bad, maybe a few hours of job plus time for a brake bleed. You shouldn't need to remove the MC for a basic system bleed. But depending on how empty everything got bleeding may take a while. Also, if the ABS block ran dry, that can cause a headache if you don't have a full-function scan tool to cycle the valves or some kind of forced system bleeder. I have not had to service a dry system on a WK2, so I can only guess baised on the other systems I have had experience with.

    • @Chumley360
      @Chumley360 5 місяців тому

      Not on a Durango specifically. But in general a long extension, or multiple connected, and either/both a swivel socket or universal & shallow socket with an impact gun go a long way. Also dropping the trans cross member so things can droop a little also helps. Use jack to support things, be patient, and be OK working by feel for the upper bolts. It's a little tough to type out, but once you start you should be able to see the way. Another thing is that the trucks have a tapered cross member, so if the Durango also does it will be a royal PITA to knock it out of the way.

    There's a trick to solving the lower bearing In the column thing you mentioned, using a small sliced peice of old serpentine belt, it wedges into that section between the shifter and intermediate steering shaft and takes up that play that also can cause alittle steering slop outside of just plain bad gear boxes, I believe a ziptie will also hold it in place. But it wedges in so well it never comes out. Did it years ago. I believe someone else made a youtube video on it. Don't remember for sure but would be a good Content idea for ya, Appreciate the vid. They are motivational I'm doing a 5.9 timing cover gasket myself....

    • @Chumley360
      @Chumley360 5 місяців тому

      You are correct about that part. I think I even saw a video where a piece of rubber and hose clamp. I spent a bunch of time looking it over while the bay was empty and found that the column to steering gear was reasonably fine. The part that I was messing with is where the auto shift linkage hooked up back when the truck was an auto. I guess it's a bit flobbly with nothing connected to it. Good luck with the gaskets.

    • @Chumley360
      @Chumley360 5 місяців тому

      Thanks! From the bits of research I did on the intake, replacement boils down to end use. The Barrel intake mods and aftermarket EFI intakes are all for more HP. Obviously if you go carb, then you're going in a whole other direction. If you use the truck in a manner that requires or utilizes torque then stick with the barrel intake. I opened/smoothed my intake ports and the throttle body, probably didn't do anything HP/TQ wise, but made me feel good. Also I'm having really good results with the Hughes ECU compatible cam. It was well worth the money.

    I agree, you do have to keep an eye on the weight. To counter this we went with a 1967 M416 military trailer. Both of our jeeps (her JKU and my JLU) work well with this set up. We do tent camp and keep the most of the weight in the trailer. The jeeps are still with stock suspension with the JK on 33s and the JL with 35s. Both are daily drivers and only become overlandy when the need arrises.

    Don't feel ashamed for not getting a hydrostat. The opposite should be true. Feel bad for anyone who can't operate a tractor and HAVE to get a hydrostat. Feel proud. You picked the best. The GEARED tractor puts 300% power to the ground. Meaning it will pull 3x what a hydrostat will pull. Those who can't operate a tractor and have to go with the MANBUN of tractors give up the true potential of a tractor. Congrats on not drinking the yuppie hydrostat coolaid!

The Gladiator platform would be the way to go if you want Wrangler looks and the ability to carry more than a Happy Meal. But then you start getting into wheelbase issues. People can build what they want, I just had about a months worth of feed full of "Overland Jeep" content and it was 80% JKs, and I had to wonder "Why?".

    Fyi for anyone that finds this in the future if you want to delete your egr system. The only thing the icu looks for is the egr temp sensor, at least on 940s. Some earlier egr systems don't even throw a cel when removed but if you have a temp sensor it will. Easy fix is take your egr temp sensor and measure it's resistance while hitting the thermometer probe with a blow torch for a few seconds. Resistance should increase as it gets hotter. I used a .25w 1.5k ohm resistor and a male connector pigtail. Soldered the resistor to the wires and used marine heatshrink to seal it up. No more egr system and no cel.

      Thanks for the great info. In around 20 years of playing with Volvos this is the only one I've had with EGR and I've put absolutely zero effort looking into a how to delete it.

    I’ve got the same tractor. Only thing I dislike is the key location. Lol

    There is a fan collectors forum on the internet. I do not recall where I found it, but I am am sure you will find the parts you need on that forum if you can find it. I have two of those fans and they move a tremendous amount of air and are a bit collectable. The fan is worth finding the parts and fixing. BTW: Nice shop

      Thanks! Probably not much happening with the Volvo anytime soon. I've got to form a direction for it.

      Thanks for the feedback. I just noticed the sound thing the other day. I usually work on these with my earbuds in and my volume seems fine in the end. I guess my settings are off, still learning this stuff.

    Clean your metal of all mill scale and rust to bright shiny metal. Your welds will come out much better. Cool project.

      Thanks. Yeah that's the correct way to do it. When I do stuff I'm concerned with I 100% do the full clean. Stuff like this, close enough is fine. It's a terrible mentality, but old habits die hard.
