Silent Hunter 5 - SH5 - Quick Freighter Shot
Переглядів 2645 років тому
Quick shot using only RAOBFP and Attack Disk on one of the training Historical Missions in Wolves of Steel. No plotting. This is using the techniques I discussed in the tutorial videos I previously uploaded. Kids came in during the recording. I guess that's what I get for recording when they are around.

    This is exactly what I want to do. Do you think the res is necessary?

    • @ishmobile
      @ishmobile 3 місяці тому

      No. I rebuilt this about a year ago (reorganized, cleaned, etc.). I did it without the second time. It is a lot harder to fill the loop and you can't see the level of the loop. If building without the reservoir, you have to submerge one of the nipples on the radiator (whichever one you put on last) and the tube going to it. Run the pump until liquid is flowing through and then slip the tube over the nipple. It took me a few tries to get it without a big air bubble, but it's definitely possible.

    Wow, how incredible, coincidentally I have a 280 mm one and I was thinking of putting a reservoir in it, but I don't know exactly what size tube I should buy, you say that the one you bought measures 6.5 cm in internal diameter, do you recommend that I buy one of that same one? size or a smaller one that is tighter?

      The size I used is just fine. I rebuilt it this last summer because I moved it to a new case. It had definitely lost some fluid to permeation, but it never leaked. I did put clamps on all connections to be extra safe. Best of luck. Take it slow and you'll be fine.

      Periscope bearing won't break the calculations. They will work whatever angle you start at, assuming you put the right ones in on the Attack Disk. The main goal with the attack disk is to setup a 90 degree shot, so you don't have to set large gyro angles.

    Good and clear explanation! Thanks! One question though: how can i properly attack multiple targets at the same time using the TDC? Is it possible to say put in data for each ship seperately? It looks like it can't, so i have to change the TDC data when targeting another vessel manually after firing the first shot. Is it even possible to land multiple shots around the same time on different ships?

    • @ishmobile
      @ishmobile 4 роки тому

      Good question. I don't think so, but I'm not sure. I think you could take note of the settings, fire, modify them, and fire again. If you did that, I would suggest setting the first torpedoes to slow and the second to fast. If the range is relatively high, you would have a minute or two to get the second shot off. Also, if they are at similar speeds and ranges, like in a convoy, you could rotate the periscope to the new target and it would adjust the rest of the settings to match the new angle and it should be close enough. At long ranges, it would be too inaccurate, but at short ranges it should work.

    • @SBeest1
      @SBeest1 4 роки тому

I spotted the cause of your first failed shot: at 17:03 when you tried to enter the TDC 25°, you put 32° in place!! it's a pity, because everything was perfect... Thanks for the tutorial! 4:58 I'm probably missing something obvious, but could you clarify for me: when you use the method of speed measurement of having the ship pass a particular point on the periscope - i.e., time it takes for the ship to pass from bow to stern over a particular point, would the duration of this interval not depend on the AoB? If a ship was coming at you with a small AoB, I think it would take longer for it's bow to stern to cross a particular point vs. if it was at a flat AoB (e.g. 80 deg). I might be missing an intuition here, but it would seem that if you take a ship length of 200m from the manual, the time it takes it to cross a point on the periscope would correspond to the speed on that dial only if it were at 90 AoB.

    • @ishmobile
      @ishmobile 4 роки тому

      Short Answer: Yes it would depend on their AOB. I think this is one of the many reasons WWII U-boat commanders tried to get to 90 deg AOB when setting up for the shot. It reduced the number of areas they would be getting inaccuracies. This is one of the reasons I took another speed measurement at 14:20 when it is at 90 deg AOB and I get 10 kn, instead of the initial 8 kn. Long Answer: An AOB farther from 90 degrees would affect this measurement. As an extreme, 0/180 degrees would never cross. 90 deg AOB is by far the most accurate. On the other hand, for most reasonable distances, if everything else is close, you don't have to have the speed exactly correct. When shooting at a 200m ship, you have a lot of room for error. This is usually an accumulation of AOB, range and speed errors. These are some of the reasons shots were rarely if ever perfect. It just had to be close enough. Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you found it informative.

    • @ishmobile
      @ishmobile 4 роки тому

      That's a great question I didn't mention in the video. If you want to use 1.5x multiplication for the short-range shots, use the mark on the lower right of the ring, at 3 o'clock spot, instead of the top mark. The 12 o'clock is for 6x and the 3 o'clock is for 1.5x. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

    I'm really jealous of your triple monitor setup. I like the ultra wide in the middle with two 16:9 monitors as your peripherals. when you were making your second delivery around 1:11:00 mark, I noticed that you're air brake pressure gauges were reading low and it wasn't building pressure. Then, on the applied brake pressure gauge, it was showing your brake being applied to around 10 psi. I'm not sure if it was a glitch or something, or maybe your brake pedal was being depressed by something, which would explain why it couldn't build any more pressure. If you had run out of pressure though, you would have been in trouble. I did notice that it didn't seem to change as you used your brakes though, so it must have been a glitch. I'm enjoying your streams and am glad I can still watch even though I missed this one live.

      @ishmobile 6 років тому

      Thanks for stopping by. I love the triple with the ultrawide, except that it makes it where I have to use SoftTH to do my triple-screen setup. It works pretty well, but there are limitations. In fact, I've thought about trading in the middle monitor for another 16:9 (less expensive) or seeing if I can get two more 21:9 monitors (more expensive). I'm probably just stuck as I am. I know. First-world problems. As far as the air pressure goes, I have noticed that it doesn't seem to change. I also never get low-air warnings. I have the option checked for air pressure simulation, but I don't think it's working. It could be any of a myriad of mods interfering. Maybe, I'm going to have to do some testing off stream and figure out what is going wrong, because I would love to have that enabled.
