Guitars Are Hard
United Kingdom
Приєднався 26 лип 2011
I will conquer the guitar. But guitars are hard. This is my journey from beginner to, where? I might give up. I might make music. I might form a band. Step this way...
For money, I am an IT project manager in the automotive finance industry. Born in the North of England, I now live in Hertfordshire with my wife and daughter. Raised in the heart of Robin Hood country, I studied Computer Science at university in Sheffield. Since the mid 1990's I have worked in the information technology industry.
"Memes of Loss and Devotion" is my first collection of sci-fi / horror short stories. Guitars are my first love.
Seriously, you read this far? Wanting to know about someone 'cos you like their work, is like wanting to get to know a duck 'cos you like pate.
Please subscribe.

I'm returning to playing guitar after a 20+ year absence, so I'm no virtuoso. (My fingers & brain don't work like they did in my teens / twenties!) I am in essence not very far from a beginner.
Join me on my journey into the world of guitars. This will be a magic, mysterious, thrilling, sometimes infuriating, journey into learning, playing and recording guitar, and all things guitar related.
Think of me as your learning buddy, your 'pathfinder', a nostalgic reminder of your own guitar learning story, or primarily an entertaining novice on a journey of discovery. I won't take this too seriously. It's a hobby, not life and death. Let's have a laugh together.
At the end of 2020 I was challenged to record a cover version of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes on my guitar. The challenger said that if I recorded it then they would record themselves singing over it. This kick-started my 2022 drive to not only re-learn the guitar, but improve on my 'skills' from my 20's, finally conquer the instrument, and start the "Guitars Are Hard" UA-cam channel to share my experiences and knowledge with others.

I recently got hold of another Steinberger Spirit GT-Pro, except it has the S-S-H layout. It's from 2010. Great guitar, very comfortable to play. Though I've gutted the electronics and replaced them with a single Seymour Duncan Humbucker and 1 volume. The stock humbucker was alright but the singles weren't great at all. I purchased my first Steinberger back in 2014, with the S-S-H. Did the same mod back then, except with a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge 🙂 They've both always stayed in tune much better than my regular guitars. Do you still have the one in this video? Cheers!
That's pretty cool. I've only ever seen the Synapse with 2 x EMG humbuckers on the 2010 guitar. Even on the modern one, the single coil is a waste of space & I never use it. How hard was the routing? What is it like with the SD's? Can I be really cheeky & ask what you paid for it? That bridge keeps them in tune forever! Have you gigged it? I still have mine. I took it on holiday in the summer. Great guitar. My only complaint is that the pickups feel too close to the strings, but that's just me being weird...
@@GuitarsAreHard Thank you! Yes I believe the Synapse Guitar models only came with 2x EMG humbuckers (or 1x for the Synapse Basses) Yeah, before gutting out my current one. I found the middle to be REALLY quiet & the neck to be very bland and undefined. As you can't really adjust the height of them, for me the middle got in the way of my picking. I didn't rout anything, just removed all electronics and re-installed 1 volume pot & 1 humbucker. I did have a Steinberger Spirit 5 string bass earlier this year. I did slightly rout the bridge rout to fit an EMG pickup, wasn't particularly difficult. Pay wise; for my previous one I had in 2014 & my current one I paid around the £300 mark for both. So nearing discounted brand new retail prices really. I think that's pretty much the going rate for 2nd hand Steinberger Spirit Guitars. Gig wise; Between 2014 - 2016 I had recorded an entire album with just that guitar, taken it with me to plenty of rehearsals and performed one show with it. Never had an issue. My current one has yet to left the house. I'll be recording an album with it soon though. Glad to hear you still have yours and it has worked out well for you. The humbuckers can be adjusted so that shouldn't be a problem. The middle can't really. Is it the middle that's the problem? Cheers!
Hello again, sorry you asked about the SD. I decided to go with a Seymour Duncan Jazz Bridge Humbucker. So far I quite like it. It lacks a lot in the low-end department but has a lot in the way of treble. Though because of that I do have work on the EQ a bit more for when I palm-mute. In my original I had a Dimarzio X2N. VERY high output humbucker. It's rather full on when distorted and the tone can be become rather 'sizzle' like. Of course, your mileage may vary if you decided to change pickups 😃 Lastly, you said about getting a bass to match? I'd recommend avoiding the 5 string Steinberger Spirit basses. In my experience the low B string wasn't that great. The regular 4 strings sounded perfectly fine! All the best!

youre doin great dood playing guitar is tough and takes practice just like anything else
Thank you!

Thanks, will do! Thanks for the encouragement. I truly appreciate it.
My advice; ignore trolls, enjoy playing and practice as much as possible, you’re doing good
Thank you for the encouragement & kind words!
So some troll took the time & effort to call my playing "garbage" in the original video that these clips appeared in. I know it's not world class, or pro, or even good playing and the sound quality is questionable, but did this really deserve to be called "garbage"? I'm not asking so you can stroke my ego. I just want an honest assessment of the level I'm playing at. I tried very hard to put some feeling and emotion into the playing. I also never expected it to be so harshly critiqued. Was it unjustified? Let me know what you thought of this clip in the comments. Thanks for watching. Hey, if you enjoyed it, then why not subscribe. I try to publish new tips at least weekly. Thank you! And thanks for the membership! 😍 I'm still not sure how 2 make it sound 'pro'?
unless the 3 strap locks are just for different heights and the tremolo is designed like that so they don't need to make both a left a d right handed tremolo, but this would be one hell of a coincidence
I think you're right. After I put the video out, it occurred to me that you'd probably have to have an upside bridge to make it truly left-handed. So, the strap locks are probably just their for height / comfort.

Yeah, good point, well made. I'm just being lazy recording like that. I'll use my digi recorder for voice & connect the practice mini amp to ODS in the future. I thought I could get away with it. Obviously not. Lots of my other videos are recorded properly, though. Thanks for the wake-up, call. Thanks for taking the time to tell me! Strangely, it sounds better in the outakes...
Is your Gibson hard case made in Canada?
Yeah, I checked it out, and it's made in Canada . There's a seam already coming unglued, though. Not much of an advert for its makers. Why do you ask?
@@GuitarsAreHard a friend of mine bought brand new LP few weeks back & his case made in Puerto Rico. Mine 2019 LP 's case made in Canada.. just curious 😄
Cool. I see. I didn't know that.
Her dad has some strange things going on in his past jobs and present job
Intriguing. Can you say any more or point us all at more info?
this is only because the modern public doesnt know any of the old great ones. nothing like those these days anymore, in rock /pop i mean there are some awesome flamengo guitarists still and classical ofcourse.
I think unfortunately, they're are less and less actual great musicians in music. It's just not required or rewarded any more. Modern 'songs' are just hooks and choruses. Streaming caused this.
i didnt see tim henson on that list i believe he deserves it.
Good point. I doubt that any of the general public, even the ones who buy guitars, know him too well. Proficiency & technical ability is just not rewarded. Plus, this list is meaningless. It served its purpose - getting more clicks for a guitar retailer.
Yes, she plays different guitars. She mostly plays acoustic. At times she'll play the electric guitar and the banjo. She has also played a mandolin and a ukulele. But she's never shredded a guitar like Eddie Van Halen or Joe Satriani. That would be sick to see 😎. Now, I personally don't know how to play guitar but I've seen and heard other reactors who do play guitar say that she has a unique way of playing it. Whether it's finger placement or how she chooses to put certain chords together. Which you showed us and can understand what I'm saying. You said it's simple but asked why she makes it harder for herself to play certain chords due to finger placement. Who knows, maybe for her it's easier to play it like that. I don't know 🤷♀️. But hey you tried and attempted to understand how she plays 👍. And yes, she learned to play 12 string guitar when she was young because someone said she couldn't so learned it to shut them up lol. She received a guitar for her birthday and as a Christmas present (cuz her bday is Dec 13 and it's her lucky #) when she was around 8 years old. The music video "Christmas Tree Farm" shows her getting her first guitar. She attempted to learn it on her own til one day, a technician came to the house to fix something for their home and heard her practicing. He then asked her if she wanted lessons and that's how she learned to play guitar.
A Taylor Swift metal song (album?) with shredding, or even a solo, THAT SHE PLAYS, would be awesome! At this stage in her career she can afford to experiment and take chances, and a metal album would be just that. I'd rather see a UK style indie album, although I'm sure she'd be accused of faking it, or being told to stay in her lane. She should make a track with The Manic Street Preachers! She actually has very few chords in her songs - around 4 - and follows well known progressions. as I said in the video, her choice of chords and finger placements is 'economic' at the very least, but there are F's & barre chords etc. in there, so she can play. I didn't know that about 12 guitar string! That's brilliant! Good on her. (I hope that doesn't sound patronising?) My birthday is Dec 19th & I got combined presents too. Wow, I didn't know she started at 8! I need to watch that video. Everyone needs a tutor. No one can totally self teach. I didn't know any of that. Thanks for the info!
@@GuitarsAreHard Yes. We all have been wanting her to do a full on rock album for years now. We've seen her rock out in electric guitar. And has changed a few pop songs of hers into a rock version of it. It's common now that she includes some rock in her concerts and live performances. For example, check out the live version of her pop song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" from her 1989 World Tour. It's the rock version. You can hear some punk in there as well and she growls a bit when she's getting really into the song. She done it a few times and we all love it. I'm telling you she's so emo lol. Early in her tours she did covers of the bands/artists she liked. From rap to rock to hip hop to alternative. Later on she brought them on stage to perform together in her 1989 World Tour. She also performed with Def Leppard on CMT's Crossroads show. Wanna know something cool too? She's named after James Taylor. She got to sing with him too. And he's good friends with Carol King, who presented Taylor with Artist of the Decade Award back in 2019. Taylor got to also sing and induct Carol into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. Carol considers Taylor like a songwriting granddaughter. Taylor is also good friends with Sir Paul McCartney and his daughter. She's attended his house parties over the years. He was seen singing and dancing with fans at her Eras Tour a few months ago. And lastly, she has love and respect from Stevie Nicks as well. So there's that level of respect there from these giant icons. In her live Grammy Museum performance, she sang "Wildest Dreams" using an electric guitar and doing some palm muting. She sounded great. Love that edginess about her. I've been saying for some time now that she needs to do metal, punk, progressive and grunge. Some symphonic and melodic rock too. She is that versatile. And the reason we look forward to her music is because she's constantly changing genres and experimenting with different sounds. She really is an artist that has grown over time while others are still playing the same thing over and over again. No musical growth whatsoever. And Taylor always delivers the goods and with quantity. You can hear her growth as an artist and as a person in her albums from the beginning to present time. She has said she never wants to make the same album twice. To clarify, she got her first guitar at 8 years old but didn't fully start playing the instrument til she was around 12. And she also started songwriting before she was 12 years old. You know, the super simple songs that kids will come up with. There's a clip of her singing about the sun and how happy she is and that she came up with it in 5 minutes. Very sweet and cute lol. Growing up, Taylor loved reading and writing. She enjoyed Language Arts class, especially when it came to poetry. The "Tim McGraw" song she wrote in a math class around the time she was 15. She entered it in some poetry competition and won. There's also another story where she wanted to hang out with a boy that she liked but her parents didn't approve and she was so upset that she stormed into her room and wrote her feelings into a song and wrote a story about it lol. That song is "Love Story".
From what I see, she's a better guitarist that you. What a toxically dumb video.
I even say that in the video.
You're risking stepping into a flame-storm from her fans. Bold move and I respect it. Is singing and guitar picking really that hard? Grace Vanderwaal could do it well when she was 13-14 and had only been playing for a year or two, albeit on the ukulele. Please put in some more effort. "How long has she been playing or performing?" can be answered by a very few minutes on the internet. You note your guitar is out of tune - so pause your recording and make the effort of tuning it.
Well, I find playing & singing hard! Although a ukulele is easier to play - less strings = less fingers to fret to form chords. Mind you, I can't actually sing either. Maybe it's easier with talent & practice? I could have Googled how long she'd been playing, but to be brutally honest, I just didn't care enough to look it up, and it never really occurred to me. That's a good tip though. I need to think a little more & go a little bit deeper. Oh, and as I said in the video, my guitar was perfectly in tune, it's my editing software that mangles it when it's picked up by my cheap TONOR RGB USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone. Maybe time for an upgrade? I have to boost the volume when I don't record it loud enough, and it does something nasty to the sound. I play something at the end of the video, which is the same tuning, but somehow just sounds a lot better. Thanks for the feedback!
My channel was def 'hijacked' by my 'interns', and I felt ever so slightly violated, but loved every second of it Thank you very much Frankie, Amy & Esme!
Interesting video. The only critique I have is the constant zoom in and out is a little distracting otherwise it was really great!
Thank you for the positive feedback & useful, 'actionable' criticism. Your point about the zooming is correct and noted. I only did it to add emphasis & break it up but I think I overdid it! Cheers!
So Taylor Swift is a great pop star. Her song writers and producers combine their talents with her hers to produce peerless pop. She looks after her fans & the communities in which she plays. I'll bet she's a really nice person. But, occasionally she appears strumming a guitar along to the song live & in videos. She even does personal appearances where it's just her and an acoustic guitar. But can she actually play it? And if so, how well? I'm not asking if she deserves to be so huge, or if she has good songs, or if good session guitarists play on her recordings. I'm asking how good is she at playing the guitar? Watch this video to hopefully find out.
Why does the guitar sound have this weird, gargled, quantization, clipped sound? 🤔😪
👋
🖐 back atcha!
Guitars Are Hard, wanna collab I really liked it
Sure. What have you got in mind?
