"Bucktown Stomp" - Johnny Dodds' Washboard Band (1928)
This Johnny Dodds composition features his brother Warren "Baby" Dodds on washboard.
Johnny Dodds and trombonist Honoré Dutrey played together in King Oliver's Jazz Band five years prior, and they continued playing together until the following year. Dutrey died in 1935 as a result of asthma that he had developed during his time in the Navy during WWI.
Pianist Charlie Alexander went on to play in Louis Armstrong's orchestra in the early 1930s.

This hot side features some fine solos by Jack Pettis and Paul Mares, as well as to excellent drum and woodblock work by Ben Pollack. This side is rather worn, so I apologize for the extra noise and distortion. "Beside A Silv'ry Stream" - Club Macon Orchestra, v/ Arthur Hall (1925)

This side has a very prominent cello, which is quite a rarity for dance bands of this era. The cellist even gets some solos near the end! I suspect that this may be a Bennie Krueger group, seeing as he was one of the few dance band leaders to have a cellist in the group. Also, the banjoist sounds like Harry Reser to me, who played in Krueger's orchestra at the time. If anyone can determine any ...
"Twilight (The Stars And You)" - Nathan Glantz & His Orchestra (1925)

Here's a delightful version of Nacio Herb Brown's song "Twilight (The Stars And You)", not to be confused with "Midnight (The Stars And You)" famously performed by Ray Noble's orchestra with vocals by Al Bowlly, which is a different song entirely. This song has some excellent solos and duets, featuring Nathan Glantz himself on soprano saxophone, Ephraim Hannaford on trombone, and Harry Reser on...

Here's a neat Ben Selvin side (as the Bar Harbor Society Orchestra) featuring some excellent trumpet by Earl Oliver and xylophone by George Hamilton Green. There is also a great bass saxophone solo shortly after Vaughn De Leath's vocal, but I don't know who it could be. It is most likely one of the reeds doubling because there is no bass saxophone on the other side nor before or after the solo ...

Great song and singer
'BEAUTIFUL SONG, DESPITE ALL THE SURFACE NOISE.
my favourite part was when the guy started barking like a dog
Wonderful masterwork!!!what a gem!Noone solo Is fantastic!thank you so much!!!
Picked up a set of Tempo records in the album from Hoffman Radio. Gal gave me hundreds for free. She said haul them away!!
A joy ! Thank you.
Ain't you Nathaniel B?
That's most definitely Earl Oliver playing the trumpet solos on this side. Bossen is playing second here it seems. Oliver uses growls and rather short, staccato phrases when soloing and Bossen tends to be "stretchy" and more akin to the Red Nichols schooling of bending notes and jumps. This means that Earl Oliver is also definitely present on the other side and the trumpet team on this record comprises of Earl Oliver & Andy Bossen. Oliver Takes lead on this side while Bossen the other side. Also Ben Selvin is one of the voices in the group vocals.
Earl Oliver was my first thought, thanks for confirming. I think I recognize Larry Abbott’s voice too (“Yes, Ma’am!” at the end). Thanks for your comments!
Thanks for posting both sides of this very fun record. Ben Selvin was a very prolific artist, and his mid-late 1920s recording tend to have elements of hot jazz with some of the finest musicians of the day. I'm no expert, but the hot trumpet towards the end does have the very Earl Oliver sound to it (per the Harry Reser's recordings). In fact. much of the band sounds like a Harry Reser recording without Reser. I wonder if several of the unknown musicians, especially the bass sax player, are from the Reser ensemble. Just speculation, though.
Andy Bossen is lead trumpet and solos here. Second could be any number of Selvin regulars including: Red Nichols, Hymie Farberman, Earl Oliver, etc
I've seen Dennis (misspelled on label) Lotis in some British pictures (notably "Horror Hotel", but never heard him sing. He has a great voice and style! Thank you!
Where did you discover the nice song?
I got this record on ebay a couple years ago.
@@CDey78 Thank you for the answer!
Thanks for sharing this peppy tune that I have never heard before
Never knew this was thing, thanks for sharing

Brilliant. Thank you for sharing.

Wow! Early Sam Lanin!
Another sweet find C Dey! Bob Effros and Bob Biers on horns 🎶🎺🎶 Grandpa was with Vincent Lopez from 1921-1927.
Just caught this peppy Vincent Lopez number w Grandpa Bob Effros and Bob Biers on trumpets and various slide horns. 🎶🎺🎶 Thanks C. Dey
I didn't know May Aufderheide had any 78 rpm recordings. This is an excellent discovery.
Nice and bouncy
This doesn´t sound very "Orthophonic" to me!
Great vocal
Magnifico
The vocalist is George Wilton Ballard.
That makes sense, he did record for quite a few Edison discs. Thanks for the confirmation!
My kind of music.Encore Maestro!
One thing about BG - he *loved* what he was doing.
BIX GOT AROUND. HE WENT THROUGH A LOT OF BANDS. AND SAT IN WITH A LOT MORE. STARTING WITH THE WOLVERINES.
I've read that this was actually recorded in 1934.
I just looked it up. You’re right, it was recorded on August 28, 1934 in Chicago. Thanks for pointing that out!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful post. I love it.
I had a copy of this. Pretty good piece.
Great twenties tune!
Delightful
I am blessed to have several Nick Lucas records...I don't have this one , tho'..many thanks . He was very popular in his day .
Magnifique
Arthur Shirley means Jimmy Shirley (I love him) 78rpm is out of my reach, so I recently bought a MOSAIC box and have been listening to it a lot.😃
He has a nice solo on the B-side!
LOVE IT
Recorded on November 1, 1927. Also released on Cameo 1252 and Lincoln 2717.
How could they have a copyright year of 1926, if it was recorded in 1927?
The *label* was copyrighted in 1926. Romeo was one of Plaza Music/American Record Corporation's "dime store" labels, active from 1926 through 1935. Regal was another of their "discount" labels- and that one originally had a 1921 copyright date (it lasted through 1931).
Also released on Cameo 1252 and Lincoln 2717.
Thanks. I really enjoyed it.
Mr. Marceloosvadosoto says : "He is 80 y/o and this music brings nice memories from his teenage years in Argentina. Hey I'm also from Argentina but left in 1962. He mentions his band playing in Palomar (airport) outside Bs. Aires. The bands name was The Kansas City Stompers. I'm 87 and live in Texas. Play trombone.
Thank you for uploading these.
Essentially the Tommy Dorsey band recording as "The California Ramblers".
Yes. Also, Tommy Dorsey and Cliff Weston were both in the original California Ramblers groups at some point. Ed Kirkeby was also present in this session as a supervisor, as well as a vocalist on some sides.
Why 78, 26 rpm?
78.26 rpm is the actual speed at which most 78s were recorded after 1925. It was based on the speed of a phonograph motor (3600 rpm) divided by the number of teeth on the gear (46). 3600/46=78.26. The term “78” is simply rounded, just like how LPs are often called 33 rpm records when they actually spin at 33 1/3 rpm.
Before 1925, recording speeds varied- some discs as much as 80 rpm, or less than 75.
As expected, Dodds is nice, and as expected, the teacher's explanation section is perfect.😃😃😃
Making coffee and enjoying this , at this moment all is good . Thankyou for uploading 👌
A clip of this song is in the 1973 film "Paper Moon". I've had this 78 for years.
