930s Shaw Knight & Co Enameled Fireclay Cistern. Updated video with different syphon. Purchased from a Reclamation Yard a few years ago, for sale as a planter, but now finally found original fittings that this cistern once had. The cistern, syphon and float valve have been fully cleaned up & reconditioned. The brackets & cast iron lever have been primed ready to paint. The cistern has been test...

Paired with a HLSP Shires Lynx cistern with a 1958 Shires Kingfisher that requires restoration. A very characterful and interesting WC pan made by the Associated Clay Industries company. A full pass on the WC pan, minus a few glaze cracks. However the syphon with a replacement piston, requires extra work to bring it back to standard.

Omg so my dad had this in the upstairs when we moved in. Strap too and had Side handle flush
@stefanlipinski9432 Oh wow haha. I also remember seeing one of these when i was 3 - 5 in Kent as well. Used to have a really cool cat statue inside the room it was in
Best type of toilets, produce the most force and where the expression to 'pull the chain ' came from. Nice work from an appreciative plumber.
This is a really nice toilet with a great flush (if a little bit weaker with the replacement Shires Syphon than the worn out one (a more modern replacement one) in the previous video of this toilet still in the property where it was originally installed - but still does the job perfectly).
@christopherdickson2996 It is a lil disappointing that this taller Shires Syphon didn't quite flush as adequately. I would have kept the Macdee syphon.. if only it was tall enough. I try to source the correct type fittings where I can.
Well done soldiering on in this horrendous weather 👏
Thanks haha, i have to work all weathers, specially as I just had an offer in the lawley cistern at that time, and it still wasn't tested
Might see if I can source a matching lid for this.
I assume this is the same one from your previous video, if so, the flush seems much weaker with that shires syphon opposed to the blue one it had before?
Flushes like the Balterley Carina Shell and the Shell MK2 suites I have.
Amazing a double trap syphonic toilet with no aspirator - one less part to go wrong with it I suppose (especially as there is only a handful of suppliers supplying the double trap aspirator now).
Very nice, this wasn't long after they took over RV it seems, before they upgraded the trapway and flush. This one has a pretty good flush for one of these, surprised the syphon doesn't empty the entire cistern tho. Also yeah they're technically 'double' trap however there's a gap on the interior of the second trap which is what makes it syphon, and is also the reason these never syphon out completely, when the water nears the bottom of the trapway mouth, the gap in the second trap is exposed to air thus breaking the syphon.
Oh wow, that is incredibly interesting & insightful, helps me and future viewers understand how these WCs work. There is actually a round hole on the syphon where it drains down, so I believe that this was intended to drain only as far as where it went. .
@ I'd block it up and get it flushing the entire thing haha. And yeah it's a bit of a peculiar design
I take it there is no hole for an aspirator in the inlet with this as the top section regarding the seating area, rim and cistern connecting sections seem to have the Royal Venton Status design, only difference is this one has a different pedestal and footprint and does not extrude outwards like the Status, also the cistern with yours was different to the Coronet one suppled with the one I had which was badly damaged. Only thing I don't like about this and the Status is they don't even syphon out all the way so I wouldn't regard it as a true syphonic but I do like the flush.
I would prefer to see the original ball valve but i remember these "button" cisterns well.
Yay thats my toilet which I'm having soon, obviously only the pan as you can keep the cistern due to the condition. That syphon is definitely older then the cistern, that logo was introduced in either 1979 or 1980.
Never seen a Croydon valve in real life, super rare and collectible
Rare to see a green float these days. Used to really like them especially with a green syphon.
Looks incredible!! I love the syphon and float of choice, compliments it very well.
Lovely old single trap syphonic Royal Venton LL toilet (side handle).
Nice Royal Venton LL toilet - the brass flush handle is a nice complement too!
Nice Royal Venton LL toilet - the brass flush handle is a nice complement too!
That's the pan I gave you but with a 1965 cistern.
*1964. The one you gave me was 1965.
@@castironcisternsIndeed, the cistern I gave you was made in 1965.
Lovely bit of kit with the side handle.
Lovely stuff, trapway seems a bit different to the one I found and other I've seen pictures of
I do like this generation of Armitage Shanks Contour - they have great flushes!
That one is also another one I gave you and the original cistern was made in 1965, not 1964, also glad you liked it.
I have never seen one of those Royal Venton pans before but it is absolutely fabulous
Yay, that's the one I gave you
That's absolutely amazing and I hope that it all goes well on the Disabled toilet project
Hoping to restore my old cistern any advice on what to paint it with please
Hammerite Special Metals Primer. That's usually what I restore my cisterns with, then paint over the exterior with whatever paint you'd like to use. Apologies for the late reply, best of luck with restoration
An amazing toilet pan with a great flush - fully glazed in the trapway also which is a sign of quality! The Shires cistern is nice also (I know that it cannot be sold on due to the materials it is made with) but the flush syphon needs some attention for it to work efficiently.
Very nice action great flush!
This is beautiful
Great rig, love the vintage ball valve, should probably try and find a green float to match the syphon.
Sweet rig. Good to see a porcelain siphon.
Those cisterns knew how to flush turds properly.
I was sitting on the bog when it was outside and read the writing on the cistern. It said it was made by Thomas Crapper. I thought someone was having a joke. 😂
Very good action nice restoration should last another 50 years
Great restoration! So glad i stumbled upon your channel! I got a cistern not unlike that and i've been battling to find a way to keep it from rusting after a weeks worth of use. I noticed the materials in the description but unfortunately i don't have access to those in my country. I was thinking of giving it a go with wire scrubbing and stripping all the existing paint and rust, then applying a rust converter (or Owatrol Oil, but i don't know for sure), then a layer of red oxide and then an oil based paint i was given, that is used on the underside of boats (this might be a dud as i am not sire it is meant for metals). I would really appreciate your input on this!
Would quite happily replace a modern toilet with this one. Better flush, superior components inside cistern. 👍
superb!
This is such a wonderful toilet - the flush is very quiet but still equally powerful as it flushed the rag easily with no issue (even sideways through). Love It 💖
Splendid restoration, the brasswork is beutiful. How do you get the ceramic so clean?
Shame about this being mixed stock however what a find there, hopefully you can get it year matching cistern for this pan one day. That said I am glad you managed to get this, this is definitely craftsmanship that you'll never see again.
That's a beauty 😊
Hey Dylan, I like the purple color, which I am sure once installed nobody will see the color. I am not sure what you do with them, do you refurbish them for resale? or is this a hobby? Anyway, I do learn something every time I watch, so that's a plus.
Hi, yes most of the cisterns are refurbished and put up for sale. Yes this started as a hobby, and now it's a bit of a full time commitment. The paint will be stripped, cistern rust treated then primed & tested. I prime the cisterns so they can be painted any colour, i'll see if I can get in touch with the original owner and see if I could get this exact shade of purple if you're interested etc
Perfect 🌟
Fantastic toilet - the flush is powerful too! Love it 💖
These are superb quality, never to be seen again.
Beautiful thing, great flush too
Love those ceramic Syphons, sadly transitioned to horrible plastic flush valves. 😢
One of my favourite RD washdown pans from that era
This one i'm particularly happy with, got the "Woooosh" sound the one in my childhood home had. Did offer it to someone this morning but they kindly turned it down, it's currently the only P trap pan for sale for many miles round...
Lovely
