Etherow Country Park to Werneth Low - Via Keg Pool and Beacom Wood - #walking #nature #calm
Etherow Country Park is a popular walking spot on the very edge of Romiley and Compstall. It's sat in a low wooded spot right in between Tameside (Manchester), Glossop (Derbyshire) but is actually part of Stockport itself. It's pretty much the end of the River Etherow pooling as a small duck and goose filled lake before carrying on a short distance and joining the River Goyt.
I often ride my bike over Werneth Low Country Park to the Etherow park and see lots of walking only routes crossing my path, so I thought for an experiment I would start a video from the Etherow Park and see if I could find a path to the top of Werneth Low I haven't used before.
The result was a nice walk from the car park to the impressive and noisy weir at the top of the park, followed by a loop around the Keg Pool section behind the main park, featuring a family of swans. Once I'd finished the Himalayan Balsam lined loop, I followed a path I was curious about, through Beacom Woods, along a few farm fields, up onto Beacom Lane. At which point I was back on familiar territory!
I couldn't have timed the walk from that point better, as the following fields were full of wild flowers, including orchids and purple clover.. so I had a nice sit down rest there whilst I took in some nice quiet close up views of the flowers, with views over the Peak District. I could see down into Longdendale and Bleaklow, as well as a great view of Coombes Rocks from my spot.
On from there, it was along a few more scenic hillside fields, past a tree I'm fond of, and down another narrow lane. After that point it's straight up onto Werneth Low Road, past the Golf Course and the familiar radio masts. Along the road from here you can see over to Manchester, Hyde, Hattersley and most of Tameside, as well as right into the Peak District! The views from up here are excellent... especially on a quiet weekday.
After a while taking in the view, I take us down through the heather and gorse section on top, down to Apple Street and eventually Mottram Old Road, to finish the walk.

    I absolutely love folklore and history of the Peak District and i know of a nat Nutter Woods but i had no idea there was a connection with the Devils Elbow too. I also have an obsession with the Longendale Lights which were too spotted at the Devils Elbow. I could go on about this place all day lol

      Well you're in good company with me 😁 I've been obsessed since I was a kid with looking at the paranormal stories in the area. I have an 'episode' planned for the Longdendale Lights too! It's one of the best for sure and seems to occur all up the valley from beyond Crowden to the Devil's Elbow as you say. I just thought 3 stories filmed from this spot was enough (still got one more to put up) I think I'll be doing a few locations to cover them all when I get to actually recording it. A big day out no doubt!

      Thanks very much @CB-st6bo Much appreciated!! In terms of 'wild camping' out there, there isn't a great deal of choice on Lantern Pike itself. But the field with the trees in the video at the top (west side of the peak near the drystone wall) is the only spot I would say isn't obviously exposed. Otherwise I think it would be across the way (east) to the Leygatehead Moor/Kinder side of the road. In terms of paid for campsites, I think there's only Hayfield Campsite or Chinley a bit further down the road is supposed to have a nice one, very close to Chinley Churn.

    Hi, really enjoyed the natural ambient sounds and no talking so can enjoy the scenery. I was in the area recently and really like the area. What are you using to record your videos?

    • @WarrenofWalks
      @WarrenofWalks 4 місяці тому

      Ta very much @wildaboutadventure that's my goal with most of these videos, almost like a playback of how I like to enjoy them by myself. And I use a Fujifilm X-T4 to record them. It was already my photography camera, so now it's a workhorse :-D

    Fantastic video , me and my wife have just walked a similar route today from Ashton and Mossley then via Buckton Vale and up to Alphin Pike.I'm nearly 60 and could not keep holding a go pro or other device like you do,kudos mate.

    • @WarrenofWalks
      @WarrenofWalks 4 місяці тому

      Cheers @russell4827 That's sounds an interesting route, and substantial! I bet it took in all kinds of inbetween-area views. I've walked out from atop 'Indian's Head' to Mottram, but I've not walked in from any Ashton/Mossley routes. And my camera setup is a bit of a back breaker.. it's a Fuji mirrorless camera and a gimbal with a big fluffy mic on top, it does become a mild form of torture a few hours in 😅 I appreciate the understanding!

      @@WarrenofWalks I find its easier to get to the top of the path that goes from Alphin Pike to Indians head and along to Chew , by going over the moors from Buckton Castle,the hill that overlooks Carrbrook .Best wishes mate .

      I've spent years wandering around those reservoirs but I've never tried that. I'll definitely give it more research and look at having a go myself. Thanks for the inspiration Russell! Best wishes to you too. And thanks for watching the video!

    This brought back nice memories of my days as a geology student. My clambering days are behind me, but it was lovely to see a close up view of rocks and landforms and beautiful scenery from another part of the world.

    • @WarrenofWalks
      @WarrenofWalks 4 місяці тому

      That's lovely to hear @Herbertella I'm glad you enjoyed it! I find this kind of thing fascinating myself when it's other people's corner of the world. I do enjoy a slow detailed look around somewhere I've never been to. Especially the less well known spots. And I cut so much rock out of the video thinking it wouldn't be much interest to anyone else.. 😅

    Really enjoyed this walk,superb views. I’ve only visited Chinley Churn once,but via a different route, but this route looks much better. Where did you start from?

    • @WarrenofWalks
      @WarrenofWalks 7 місяців тому

      Thank you @drewbrown1525 I'm glad you liked it! Since my first visit I've noticed a few ways up. This one starts from the main road through Hayfield going towards Chinley. I don't think the track has a name but it's just after the speed camera on your right. If you get to the 50mph sign you've gone too far up. If you search for 'Phoside Farm' on your map of choice, it should be fairly obvious to track back to the road.
