To be fair, 1702 can’t handle a 10 or 15 car train by herself unfortunately. So the diesels are needed. Plus, putting them at the end of the train means you don’t have to look at them until way after the steam locomotive passes, giving sort of an illusion that the steam locomotive is pulling the train single-handedly.

There's 2 SOU consolidations running right now, those being 401, and 630. 154 is out of service and her future is unknown (In terms of operating again). 722 will be restored eventually, and maybe, just maybe, if we keep hoping, there's always a small possibility that 542 will also steam again. So best case scenario there will eventually be 5 operating SOU consolidations. Will that happen? I kind of doubt it, but only time will tell.

Would also be cool if they could get the shay running again but that's not going to happen

I wish lol. Seriously though, it would cost more compared to other engines, but if Spencer were to restore one of the “bigger” engines on the property, 542 would be the one. Unfortunately I don’t think the cost of such a restoration is in NCTM’s budget right now, but anything is possible.
