Why Veterans Need Combat Sports
As veterans, when we decide to hang up the uniform, it can leave a void. And it's crucial to fill this void with positive, constructive life choices. In this video, I make an argument for why I believe combat sports accomplish just that. I hope you enjoy it!

👨⚕️ WHO AM I?
I’m a 2nd year medical student & a Marine Corps veteran (0351). I'm also a nontraditional student. After leaving the Corps, I completed a business degree. But after failing to find my calling in the business world, I found myself back in the classroom studying the world of science & medicine. I worked as a scribe & CNA in the ED/ICU prior to starting medical school, & those experiences confirmed my path to becoming a physician.

Finding Your Passion

In society, we often put passion on the back burner in favor of comfort & stability. Despite every intention of returning to it at some point, the years quickly pass, & before we know it, our hopes & dreams that were once so fresh & vibrant are now blackened & burned. Going against this norm requires courage & strength. Do you have what it takes? Will you settle into the comfort zone of mediocr...

My Patient Got Violent- Here's the Story
Sweet! I got mine in one. Burned through the 100 jump tickets I bought when I signed up for AFF in 6 days. Had my brand new rig 1.5 weeks after my first jump.
Did you have ANY canopy malfunctions on any of these jumps???
No malfunctions thankfully 🙂
@@JoshKorzan that’s amazing. Well done. I just did my 4th tandem and we had twisted lines. Couldn’t fix them in time. Had to cutaway and pull reserve. Traumatized me and I’m reconsidering continuing on with my next (solo) jump 😂
@@AaronAlterman that’s no fun 😅 Glad you made it down safely though.
I’m thinking of taking it up
You got this 💪
You're a legend. I recently experienced my first tandem dive and it blows my mind that people have the balls to do this on their own. Very inspiring. Maybe one day for me too
Thanks Craig! Glad you were able to experience a tandem and hope you enjoyed it!
As an LVN I was not an icu or er nurse. This was back in the 80’s. What do you do as a cna in these units? I loved medical surgical units back in the day. Everyone has a niche in medical care. I was a float and definitely should not have been in the er or icu
You pretty much perform the same duties as a CNA on the medical floors. But in the ICU, intubated patients require frequent repositioning and codes are more frequent. In the ER, I also did blood draws and splints.
Do you have to get ER certificate or you can you your CNA license
It’s on-the-job training. And you actually don’t need a CNA certification. There’s several titles for essentially the same job- nurse assistant, patient care technician, patient care provider, etc. CNA is the same but requires additional time and money for the course. I was a patient care technician/provider, but used CNA for the videos to make it easier for people to recognize what I’m talking about.
Proud to hear and see you accomplish great things. Great mindset on you as well; whoever told you all that must’ve not known who trained you! Keep it pushing & thank you for your service🙏🏽
Thank you! That’s means a lot. Will definitely keep pushing. All the best to you on your journey as well!
I am medical student in one of the Eastern European contries. Been training boxing for almost 10 years. I wear mouthguard, helmet, I'm also trying not to engage in hard sparings. What do You personally think about potenitial brain/CTE damage, that boxing can cause? Or will You recomend some other MA? Thank You very much!
Hey Deniss! Hope med school is treating you well. Ya that's a tough one. I enjoy training Muay Thai and have similar concerns. I think if we're solely focused on brain health, even getting hit lightly is probably not great. But having the information is important so that we can at least be aware, prioritize what's important to us, make tradeoffs, and ultimately accept whatever consequences may come our way. And obviously there are some things we can do to reduce or eliminate damage. I.e., light sparring rather than hard sparring, work technique & drilling only, or to not do it at all. Hope that helps!
Dude! Knew I recognized the drop zone! I did my AFP at SDC but have jumped at CSC a few times! Some of the chillest divers out there. I’m an ER nurse and we’ve started an annual staff skydiving trip and have done it 3 years in a row! Blue skies!
That's awesome! And it's cool that you guys have an annual skydiving trip. I'd love to get some coworkers together to do that in the future, wherever I end up. Maybe I'll see you at CSC some time! Blue skies!
Dope dope how high did your start from for these looked higher than normal?
14k 🤘
great video! definitely needed more perspective on this
Thank you!
My son who is 17 works at McDonald’s and makes $16/hr. I’m not trying to get a pay like nurses and doctors, but why can’t we be making $20-$25 as a starting wage when we have people’s lives under our hands. 😢
Agreed!
that’s awesome! love it. skydiving got me into paramotoring.
Thank you! Blue skies! 🤘
What do you enjoy more?
@@MANlNBIACKparamotors for sure
I want to go from nursing home to hospital. I have other hospital experience (not CNA.)

Thanks! Glad you liked the video and were able to sign up. It was one of the best experiences of my life. You’ll have a blast!
Any reccomendations on where to do the license?
I can really only speak on the jump zone where I got licensed (Chicagoland Skydiving Center), but would highly recommend it!
Congratulations . how mutch friend ? place ??
Great Job! I just got my license as well, so this makes me smile big. Thanks for sharing the journey.
Thanks and congratulations!!
One of the best feelings ever! That first solo jump wondering to yourself what you're going to do!
Congrats buddy 👏👏🎉🎉 You made it 🎉
Thank you!!
I can relate to your story so much, wow! Thank you for sharing! Out of college I fell right into the commercial insurance industry. And working within the industry for 5+ years I’ve worked in different areas and it’s never clicked for me. I decided to take a cna class and I couldn’t be more excited about getting to work in a medical environment and having direct involvement in patient care. I am hoping to apply to medical school in 2026 or 2027 depending on when I get my prerequisites done. But I find your story very inspiring. Again thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks Cheyenne! It's always great hearing others' experiences as well. I'm glad you found a better fit. Best of luck as you get started on the journey!
Who is the provider?
Great video. I wish my generalist life was as successful for me as it was for you. All that art, music, and countless other skills landed me being one of the more interesting guys wasting away in factories. At least I have something to do when I have a little free time.
Thanks Jordan! Wishing you all the success in 2024!
nicu NP and ER cns.. love both
Well Done and Coach is very Professional Nice Video.
Thank you!!
Can you make a video about Highschool who want to be doctors and talk about the process
Normally on the first 3 levels of aff you have 2 instructors. Why do you only have 1?
I’m guessing just variation between DZ’s.
What all did you learn in the ER as a CNA? I’ve always heard you learn a lot in the ER, like a lot more and it’ll give you a lot of experience for other fields. Is this true?
I learned a lot in both the ICU & ER. For soft skills, the biggest thing was probably communicating with patients. I also learned a lot from observing different members of the healthcare team- thought process, protocols, procedures, & asking questions. As far as hard skills, in the ICU I learned how to move patients effectively, i.e., boosting, changing bedding- this becomes more complex with patients connected to a higher number of lines, tubes, & machines. A lot of CPR as well. In the ER, I learned splints & blood draws, in addition to using the other skills learned in the ICU. I also got floated to the other floors many times. In my opinion, the learning opportunities are greater in higher acuity settings like the ICU & ER. It's difficult to summarize everything learned in a short paragraph, but I hope this helps!
@@JoshKorzan Thank you so much for trying to summarize as best you could! I really appreciate you replying back to me!
@@Flames_29 of course! Happy to help
You did 25 jumps in 6 days ??
Sure did! 🤘
15 bucks is a rip off for CNA salary, what state is this, 25 should be minimum for CNA
Indiana. Yeah, I know there will be variation with cost of living, but $15 is definitely low. $25 would’ve been great.
Thank you for making this concise video!
Of course! I’m glad you like it!
I want to learn. How can i learn skydiving. I love it.
Check out nearby skydiving centers. Most should have Accelerated Freefall (AFF) school 🤘
Well done. I had a friend who was ex Paras. He took 6 months of training. 3 months before his first jump.
Thank you!!

Imagine dragging your dead best friends body, missing half of his legs and parts of his arm back to base in a body bag.
1:06 what a great cut for music. Epic!
Thank you!
When I did AFF in 1996 what held me back was extremely busy DZ prevented me from getting my packing certificate
wow so incredible!!! congratulations!!!
Thank you!!
You've also failed to mention a common lie told to patients. That lie being that insurance will refuse to cover the cost if the patient chooses to leave AMA. My first thought, whar else could they be being deceitful about?
Im gonn take my cna exam on the 6th. Im doing it for the money and to see if i like it. Idc what anyone says. I currently have/am working in a restaurant and we don’t get treated any different. Im on my feet running around doing the dishes and baking. my check comes out to $200 while i am all wet and smell like booty by the time i leave. and i am only working weekends. So f it ill see where this goes.
Best of luck Andrew! Hope it’s a positive change/good fit for you!
@@JoshKorzan same. Plus im not getting any hrs during this week. So f it might as well try and see where this leads me
Where did you do AFF skydive course in 6 days ?? And cost of course was ?? Please give little information regarding the same
Chicagoland Skydiving Center. It’s go at your own pace so the time to completion can vary quite a bit. 6 days is atypical- I got lucky with the weather and didn’t have to repeat any levels. The cost can also vary depending on how you pay, i.e, prepay or payment plan. I believe for prepay, it was $3,699. I’m sure it varies from one drop zone to another though, so I’d recommend checking out the website of whatever drop zone you’re looking into for the most accurate information. Hope that helps!
Your content is great. I think two parts of YouTubing first channel optimize and video editing To engage Your audience 3x more I would love to help both of you. Could we have a 3-5 minutes meeting

I'm a PCT....I'm ALWAYS busy, and work on a busy tele med/surg floor. The PCTS/aides that just sit on their ass on their phones drive me nuts....but I've found I just do my thing and it gets noticed. I have the nurse's backs and they have mine. I had a nursing extern that was sent to me for training...they had to do a certain amount of hours for their school. She thought she was better then all that...leaving me stuck with some hard patients. It did not escape the nurse's attention. After one particularly hard patient, I kind of blew up at her (she was sitting on her phone) and was like listen....you need to learn MY JOB because one day you will be stuck with a bunch of patients and no aide. You will wish you had my mad skills. By chance someone was a no show in an adjoining unit and they pulled me and stuck her with all that. Made my day.
It's definitely frustrating working with lazy techs. I'd rather work with one hard-working tech than 3 lazy ones. We would get more done and have a much better time doing it. A good team makes a world of difference. Keep up the good work!
