Hungry just watching the video

I remember watching this live. I was in Chennai. My parents, my brother and I went and ate at the Drive-In restaurant after this match. It was our way of celebrating. I was a big fan of Krish Srikanth, who made cricket so much more exciting back in the day. In so many ways, Shastri was the polar opposite of Srikanth - serious, stern demeanor, tall, good looking bloke, with a don't mess with me attitude. They made an interesting, yet odd opening pair. We were such cricket nuts back in the day. We'd wake up early morning to watch Australian cricket. But that was only after 1980 when we got our first TV at home. Before that it was all radio. My dad had a Telerad Short Wave Radio, and would listen to Richie Benaud's commentary which was in a league of its own. Richie made cricket come to life on the air like no one before or after him. Mark Nicholas, who still does some commentary, I think, was perhaps the closest to Richie, but Benaud was in a league of his own, honestly. I digress, but that day at the drive-in, my brother and I ate Chenna Batura, shared sweet poli and had rose milks to wash it down with. That was a lavish dinner for us. Our family couldn't afford a whole lot of such dinners, but every now and then we made an exception, and winning the World Series Cup was well worth the exception. So much has changed in the last 40 years since the WSC happened. The Drive-In in Chennai permanently closed down a few years ago, my brother and I both moved out of Chennai in the late 80s and early 90s to live in the US, Richie Benaud stopped doing commentary around 2010, I think, and then passed away in 2015. Ravi Shastri went on to become a pretty good commentator himself. Krish Srikanth continued to play cricket, but could never revive the magic of that 84-85 Australian tour again. Yeah, so much has changed, but the MC"G" lives on. I had the opportunity to visit the "G" in 2019 - my kids were with me and they kinda liked it it, but they had grown up in the US, and couldn't really understand the history behind the grand stage - the stories, and the many cricket legends who had made their mark playing at the "G". I took a selfie from the stands with the splendid greens in the backdrop, wishing my dad was with me. He passed away in 2020, leaving in me a void that time will perhaps never fill. Yes, so much has changed in the last 40 years.
