A Matter of Life and Maiden - Podcast Episode 15 (Part 2): "En Vivo"
Great episode and this is very special because it is another aspect where Iron Maiden is strong and maybe better , the live concert experience by Iron Maiden. I would place the 1st 3 spots just like you. Life after Death first place because is the classic era and all that etc. 2nd place Rock in Rio because it is just mindblowing how they perform all those songs. The songs are very complicated type of compositions , tracks like The Clansmen , Sign of the Cross , Dream of Mirrors, etc. The best of two worlds : the classics and newer stuff, all delivered in great form and kicking ass performances. Nicko was phenomenal as always. That was Iron Maiden taming the beast ! Spectacular concert and the amazing Brasilian crowd at their feet. The Wickerman and Ghost of the Navigator it was a great one two punch to start a concert , just like Aces High and 2 minutes to midnight did a their time. I know for sure, that Rock in Rio concert would put many bands in shame. Then I would place in 3rd Place Somewhere back in Time. Because, just like you , that tour marked the occassion for me to see in concert for the very 1st time my favorite band. I travelled all the way from Panama to Costa Rica a 16 hours bus trip to see them live. And also , there is a song recorded and included in the album, cd and dvd , which is Powerslave and I was there replying back the " Scream for me Costa Rica ". So , we are there ! You saw The rime of the ancient mariner , no less ! It is simply incredible how Maiden can make a better and a joyful life to their thousands of fans. They' re unique.
So many great gems on all of those live records! It never gets old watching Eddie and the Boys perform! I've been very fortunate to see a lot of their catalogue over the years, and I've seen some pretty amazing songs that I never thought I'd ever see live. So for that, I'm so thankful! I'm glad you got to see them on Somewhere Back in Time as well! It sounds like you had a very similar experience to what I did! I agree wholeheartedly with what you said about Iron Maiden making life more enjoyable. That is so true! Thanks for sharing your story! Up the Irons, my friend! Best, Joe
Great episode review of the live albums! I'm with you with Live After Death such a great album! Till this day there are a few songs that I preferred to listen on that, then the original studio albums. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner for example... the way they play it and Bruce's vocals! Not to mention the intro from Churchill leading into Aces High! Sooo good! 🔥🤘🏻
Thank you for your kind words! Yes, there are so many songs that they do live that sound better than the album version! The examples you gave are some of them. I also really love the live version of "The Red and the Black" from the Book of Souls live chapter, "When the Wild Wind Blows" from En Vivo, and "Paschendale," "Dance of Death," "No More Lies," and "Journeyman" from Death on the Road to name a few! Appreciate you input and comments! Up the Irons, my friend! Best, Joe
Absolutely ! Iron Maiden is forever. Just like Beethoven or Mozart , Iron Maiden will be there for humanity forever !
Absolutely, my friend! Until the end of time... and maybe even longer! Up the Irons!
King of maiden
Great podcast ! Now , I love Man of Sorrows . Hey thats a little jewel. All the changes within the song itself , the lyrics and singing of Bruce. I love it! Tears of a clown is great too.
Great episode and beautiful words to the great Nicko Mcbrain. It is still hard to digest but the band will go on ! This was the 1st episode I heard from your podcast. SUBSCRIBED ALREADY !
Thank you for your feedback! We greatly appreciate your comments and support! Nicko was definitely one of a kind! Many thanks from A Matter of Life and Maiden! Best, Joe
Come on ! I love Invaders . Lol.
To each their own, my friend! We all hear these songs differently and like what we like. For instance, The Final Frontier record is my least favorite since the reunion, but my brother loves it, and that's ok. We all like what we like, and that's what makes Maiden so great! They have something for everyone. And it's not that I hate Invaders, but compared to the majority of the Number of the Beast record, I find it to be one of the weaker songs on the album as a whole, but that's just my opinion. Up the Irons! Thanks for sharing!
Great bands ! Just heard the postcat for Nicko. It was so emotional . Same thing for me : Iron Maiden is the motor of my life ! HEY AWESOME BANDS : Yes, Deep Purple, Rush , Megadeth , Dio , etc. Excellent !
Appreciate your kind words, my friend! I'm very glad that you're enjoying the podcast and that you can relate to the Nicko episode. I'm still processing Nicko's retirement from touring with the band, and I'm still having a hard time with it. I'm sure you can relate. It's all because of Maiden that I like all of the bands that I mentioned. With those other bands, it's like I'm trying to chase the same joy and love that I get from listening to Iron Maiden, and with all of those bands, I can hear how Maiden influenced them and how Maiden was influenced by them in their tunes. Thanks for supporting A Matter of Life and Maiden, very happy to have you!!! Best, Joe
@amatteroflifeandmaiden Hi. Yes , this past Saturday was a strange day for me. But I was lucky to see them in Bogota, Colombia . That was the 4th time for seeing Maiden live. Three previous times were in Costa Rica. I always need to travel because I'm from Panama. But that dont matter ! It is my favorite band. Been a fan since 1985. Im looking forward for the Run for your lives tour ! Hey ! I will be listening to most episodes on this channel . They're all interesting and Maiden related of course. UP THE IRONS !!
@@carlosabad6596 Very cool that you got to see them a few times and that you're as amped for the Run for Your Lives tour as we are! Welcome to A Matter of Life and Maiden! We greatly appreciate your support! Up the Irons, my friend! Best, Joe
NIcko is a legend! you should do a podcast with the highlights of nicko through the years with iron maiden, like the songs where he stands out
Agree that Nicko is an absolute legend! I might just have something highlighting Nicko's playing coming down the pipeline, so keep your eyes peeled! Up the Irons, my friend!!! Best, Joe
❤❤ couldn't have put it any better myself mate, I first seen Maiden in 1983 on the "World Piece Tour" & I seen them last year on the "Future Past Tour" I've seen them 39 times & I'll see them again next year. I was 11 when my brother took me to see them in 1983 I'm 53 now & Maiden are a part of me , they're in my blood , my DNA. Nicko will be missed so much , much love Nicko all the best ❤.
Thank you for your support and for sharing your story of Iron Maiden with us! That's phenomenal that you got to see them back in '83 and that you've been a fan ever since! 39 times is excellent! I'm sure that every show was different and spectacular in its own unique way! It certainly will not be the same without, Nicko! Maiden is engrained into our DNA too and they mean so much to us as people that Nicko's retirement announcement is definitely a hard pill to swallow. However, we will always love and support Nicko, and his 42 years with Maiden will live on for all time! Again, we greatly appreciate you sharing your story with us! Like us, it sounds like Maiden helped shape you into the person you are today, and there's a lot of power, emotion, and decades of fond memories with the band that come with that. Thanks for being part of A Matter of Life and Maiden!!! Up the Irons, my friend!!! And like us, we know that you will continue to proudly wave that Iron Maiden banner high!!! Long live Eddie and the Boys!!! Best, Joe
Great episode!!! I did not have the chance to assist The Legacy of the beast tour, I've seen Maiden In The book of souls WT and The Future recently, but I think that legacy of the beast would have been my favorite setlist.
Dont get me wrong, I sang all the songs in the future past, it was a terrific show, and I love all the book of souls era, it was pretty majestic,
Thank you for sharing your opinions, my friend! I'm happy you had a chance to see some of the great shows that they've performed over the years! Up the Irons!
Nice podcast!. I am seeing them in two weeks!
Thanks for the kind words, my friend! It's a pleasure to have you like, comment, and follow! Have a great time at the show in two weeks! They NEVER disappoint! Up the Irons! Best, ~Joe
A interpretação de Paul D'iano é insuperável
Run for Your Lives - The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner ?
That would definitely be a very interesting song to play. They just might! For years, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner used to be my least favorite song on SIT, but I really started to appreciate it when Matt and I were working out and running together way back in the day. Honestly, I've just really grown to love SIT since I saw the Somewhere Back In Time Tour in 2008. I've also grown to appreciate Adrian's playing since I became a fan of Iron Maiden, and he's become my favorite guitar player/I've grown to emulate him a ton in my playing. Loneliness has those very subtle touches that make it a hidden gem, and it would be awesome to see live!
Paul was on 2 of Maidens top 6 albums in my opinion. I got to see him on the Killers tour opening for J.P......thats a show I will never forget. Thanks Paul !!
RIP PAUL🇬🇧
There is a hole from a bullet on the Eddie's head, so I think this definitely means "Aces High" on the setlist. I really hope for "To Time A Land" and "Be Quick..." .Also I really dream about how they gonna open the show with "Tailgunner" and kick every Maiden-Expert's ass this way 😂! Up the Irons!
@nuttyDeedee Interesting theory about "Aces High"... I didn't even notice the bullet hole. Excellent observation! I agree that "To Tame A Land" and "Be Quick or Be Dead" would be phenomenal to see live! I haven't had a chance to see either, so I'd be pumped for both! As far as "Tailgunner" is concerned... I won't be upset if they don't play it, lol. Thanks for the support and the comments! Throwing my horns up to you wherever you are! Up the Irons, my friend! Best, Joe
I think this is going to be their last tour with the current line up as Iron Maiden.
@norbertoenriquedonosodeand6320 It definitely could be. The guys are getting up there in age for sure. Nicko will be 73 next year, so I could see them maybe getting a drummer to fill in for touring purposes if they decide to continue without him. Ultimately though, I think they'll do the "Run for your Lives" tour next year and in 2026, then they'll release a new album. Then they'll tour with the new record in 2027-2028 and do farewell tours in 2029 and 2030 (Nicko would be 78 and the rest of the guys would be in their early to mid seventies at that point). Then again, I could be completely wrong, lol. I do think they've got even more stuff planned than we can even imagine, but like always, they'll make us wait eagerly for whatever it is they are doing and then start sending cryptic messages about things when a new release of some kind is on the horizon. Thanks for the support and the comments, my friend! Up the Irons!
As fun as it is to speculate all the bangers and potential deep cuts, we need to be realistic about what Maiden is physically capable of playing in 2025, mainly Nicko. Recent tours and albums have increasingly sprinkled in slower tempo songs throughout, and I have a feeling this tour will be no exception. Yes, there will be some great ones that leave us presently surprised, and if they play Rime, then I can die a happy man. But let’s also not kid ourselves and think this setlist will be one classic gallop song after another.
I can definitely see that and I agree. It's going to be a setlist that allows everyone to play at their pace for sure. I saw Rime back on the Somewhere Back in Time tour, and it was euphoric! For your sake, I hope they play it so you'll have a chance to see it! I'm interested to see what they'll throw at us. We could be pleasantly surprised... My speculation has been off before, so I'm really curious as to what they have up their sleeves/have in store for us.
I could see them opening with Prowler, bringing everyone back to the very beginning - very first song on the debut album
Excellent point! That definitely slipped my mind. Could be a possibility indeed.
@@amatteroflifeandmaiden I would love to hear Invaders live.
Bashing Tailgunner is insane….
Can I play with madness could be changed for infinite dreams . Never been played since 1988
Totally agree with you on that one! “Infinite Dreams” is one our faves from 7th Son. Definitely a better number than “Can I Play With Madness” for sure! Otherwise though, this is a phenomenal setlist and we’ve gotta give Eddie and the boys credit for really homing in on the SIT and Senjutsu songs… We’re still floored by everything about this tour!
A podcast with two of the least knowledgeable hosts I've foolishly wasted my time on. Opinions and even hypotheses dressed up as facts. What a crock.
Javier De Las Heras Thanks for listening!
Guys. I do an iced earth podcast. I would love to do an episode with you guys. And help promote you guys to our viewers. I enjoy your show alot. Would just like to help more people find ya
Disappointed with this album when it came out. Little did I know this album was a masterpiece compared to the utter garbage they produced for the rest of the 90s.
I'm in, entertain me.
Great show guys. I lool forward to watching all
Angel and the gambler is one of my favourite songs, it's catchy as he'll, sure they could cut a few don't you think I could save you from the end part but I still love the album version, over all i really like this album, it has some of Dave's best solos on it .They should still perform some of these tracks live like two worlds collide, lightning strikes twice.
The album cover art is pretty awesome with Eddie as a cloud and hot air balloons over London, their progressive side is a bit more pronounced in these last batch of albums for sure. Interestingly enough, it was written with Blaze in mind but he bowed out quite amicably...Bruce even said he enjoyed Blaze's tenure with Iron Maiden. Adrian's solo in "The Wicker Man" sounds similar to the one he played in Bruce's solo song "Road to Hell," when I listened to it (Idk if you guys caught that.) Actually got a copy of their Rock In Rio 2001 show on DVD. UP THE IRONS! \m/
mihirmaiden18 That is really cool. I never noticed how similar the solos were before.
Blaze Bayley is able to sing those songs in his solo band because they tune down to fit his vocal range and so he won't strain his voice, there's actually a video of him singing the Trooper in his range where it sounds good. Another point is that the lyrics deal with even more existential topics and feelings while of course retaining some of the classic topics of war, religion/faith/spirituality, and the first bit's a surprise since most people don't generally associate Maiden with the mundane....yes it's a very moody album for them for sure.
"From Here To Eternity" is actually the conclusion of the Charlotte The Harlot saga. "Wasting Love" is about the difference between doing love and actually feeling it, in Bruce's own words. Just watch the video and it makes a lot more sense.
mihirmaiden18 Very cool! Thanks for listening
This was to be the only album Maiden did that wasn't recorded on tape. Completely digital, which back in 1990 was like going from a 35mm camera to 1 mega pixel job. Just another reason this album sounds so bad. BUTTERCOOKIE
Pop quiz: Derek Riggs pays tribute to one of his heros for the entire art set of SSOSS. Answer @ twitter.com/NosferatuRe Another great podcast guys!
You guys nailed this one. Great Job!
Maiden Nerd Alert The Live After Death Shows were recorded over 4 nights about thee quarters through the tour. However you guys are correct; Bruce's voice was plenty shredded by that time. If you want to hear Iron Maiden absolutely ON FIRE, I highly recommend you seek out Milwaukee, December 19th, 1984. You may want to cover your face with something to keep it from blistering. "irons" BUTTERCOOKIE
King of Twilight and Rainbow's Gold are arguably two of the best b-sides Maiden have ever done. Add those anywhere to the track list of this album when listening for maximum Maiden goodness. ;)
According to Derek Riggs, in his book "Run for Cover", The glove was just a "devise" to "hang" his signature on, and had no relation or meaning to the album. Apparently, he got the idea from a comic hero "Louis Crandall, The Iron Claw". So there you go :) BUTTERCOOKIE
Hi guys Enjoying the podcast As an older maiden fan (upping the irons since 83), I would like to interject occasionally, but I don't want to seem like a troll. So here I go interjecting anyway, I do wonder if you are aware of the recent lawsuit filed against Maiden by former members of the band Beckett, regarding the lyrics to "Hallowed Be Thy Name" ? If not, google it. Thus, I think given this new information you may consider a slightly downgraded rating on this one. Otherwise, keep up the good work! Cheers BUTTERCOOKIE
Broken Phonograph Media We’re actually going to address this in an upcoming podcast. We have some strong opinions about it!
Cool
Number of The Beast was great but I think Powerslave was definitely the one that triggered Maiden Mania in the U.S.! \m/ UP THE IRONS GUYS!
mihirmaiden18 No doubt Powerslave was the peak of Maiden in the U.S.!
