Why Am I Ryan Shacklett
Hey everybody, I’m Greg Sowell and this is Why Am I, a podcast where I talk to interesting people and try to trace a path to where they find themselves today. My guest this go around is Ryan Shacklett. Ryan has multiple fursonas with his main as Wild Acai. For the uninitiated, that means he attends conventions and events dressed in an insanely impressive animal suite…often referred to as a “furry”. Not only does it provide a place to explore parts of your personality, but also allows for a lot of creative expression. Not only does he participate, but he also gets to give these experiences to others through his own multi employee company that creates these impressive suites. At any rate, I hope you enjoy this chat with Ryan.

    21:40 ... "Competence porn"? I live in Japan, 40 years now, and wondered why this popped up in my UA-cam feed. "Etch" is also a romanized pronunciation of a colloquial Japanese word for "dirty minded" of a sexual nature. 🤣. Out of curiosity, I started listening, and after quickly clearing up the confusion, was delighted to hear her explanation of her craft. Psychologically, there are some similarities as to why I carry a fishing rod in hand and cruise the docks of Japan (before my sea legs got creaky, used to cruise the Izu islands south of Tokyo searching the horizon for schools of amberjack, tuna, wahoo, mahi mahi) ... not so much to catch anything, but to have an excuse to chat with the local fishermen. Although my grad school degree is in TESOL (teaching English as a second language) ... my approach to classroom instruction is closr to communication as therapy and discovery of self and other, not so different from the psychology behind jazz improv or other art forms. 52:00 ... I used to teach "Comparative Culture" classes, and just guessing, but 'influencer culture' has probably been around since the stone age. Might even think of that phrase as a tautology. The jealousy thing is understandable too. As an educator, I tried to give opportunities for the students to have fun and be creative ... but most of my Japanese colleagues, especially those with tenure, tended to be careerist, bureaucratic functionaries rather than facilitators or educators. If they saw my students having fun with the tasks and materials, such colleagues did not consider me a 'serious teacher' who should be instilling compliance to authority, and competing with each other for the high end of a bell curve on a standardized test. Delightful interview. Whatttt? Beginning and ending with a version of Take 5? Subscribed, notifications turned on. And cheers from Japan.

      @steve First, this is the single best comment this channel has received. I love that we tricked you into listening, and that you enjoyed the conversation. The fishing pole idea has such a great double meaning...fishing for conversation as it were. A good bit back I started learning some slight of hand on a whim, and it became my fidget when I'm on meetings, traveling, or when I'm teaching workshops waiting for folks to finish. It can also serve as a conversation starter, though I don't do it too often ;) I've found that universities breed some odd behaviors in some people...stuff you don't really see anywhere else in the private sector. I suppose culturally, Japan is very different too, eh. Ha, I had someone record their rendition of Take5 for me; it's been one I've enjoyed since I was really young...I'm not sure many notice.

      @@whyamipod Honored to get a reply from you Greg (and company). Though still more of a UA-cam consumer, I've picked up a handy little device (DJI Pocket Osmo 3) and am hoping to be putting something into the digital world along the lines of education and community activism. But for now, I am on substack writing under the name of "Count Chocula', along with some old Quora posts from about 8 years ago. Ha. I didn't think of that double meaning of fishing. I guess in Japanese, it has a triple meaning ... "oka tsuri' (literally "land fishing') means picking up chicks. LOL, not likely at the docks. One of the more popular part-time teachers I worked with was a very good amateur magician, so yeah ... if I were closer to the beginning of my career than the end, I'd love to pick up similar skills. But my catching "Take 5" is more closely connected with the conversation-eliciting direction I went in. I guess it was more of the jazz-fusion scene from Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" era onward, and things Brazilian that got me hooked on bossa nova guitar. Wish I could play jazz (Bill Evan, Herbie H, and Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, etc) but bossa is about as popular as jazz in Japan ... either of which can be heard as background music even in the local convenience stores. You are spot on about Universities. I've been hanging with some Japanese community activists lately who are thinking of starting a 'Free University' because they can not figure out a way to hold public school teachers or college profs accountable, My guess is that once someone snags tenure or a permanent career-track job in public schools ... they tend to be easy targets for the Dunning-Kruger effect for domains outside of their niche. The Japanese word 'sensei' seems to carry much more an honorific social cachet than American counterparts. But also in Japan, with the right connections and only a blunt sham of credentialism ... anyone and their dog can become a 'sensei'. What I found especially refreshing about your interview is authenticity. I grew up in North Carolina (went to UNC-W and Chapel Hill) and though people are pretty much the same world-wide, I sill try to live up to the state motto ... Esse Quam Videri ... to be, rather than to seem. And though, as individuals, Japanese can be every bit as authentic as anyone else worldwide, aside from families and small communities, the group dynamics here can be a horror. 'To seem, rather than to be' carries more weight in institutions. Your interview and guest were steeped in authenticity. Thanks again for your podcast and response. Cheers from a chilly Japanese night.

      @@stevemartin4249 I think everyone should share of themselves to the world...if they are comfortable...I know it's not for everyone, but it should be. My intro to Take 5 was really from an old BBC show called "The Secret Life Of Machines." They would show the guts of common objects and explain how they work. I was that kid always taking things apart(not always able to put them back right LOL). So I always associate it with my endless curiosity...I don't believe I've made that connection before just now...thanks for that! I know there are a lot of professors here in the states that went to school, got their doctorate, and then began teaching. This means they have zero experience applying their craft out in the world...which seems wild to me. That's not to say they aren't competent, it's just a lot of knowledge with no experience to gain wisdom with. I reckon it all comes down to what you are teaching, though I suppose. I looked at doing the adjunct professor thing once and I was told without at least a masters degree I couldn't do it... :) I appreciate your kind words sir. I honestly only know how to be myself...what you see really is just me. Every guest changes me in some way, though...they give me the gift of their time, and always change the way I think. You sound fairly interesting yourself...maybe the English teacher in Japan could teach the rest of us something, eh?

    • @stevemartin4249
      @stevemartin4249 7 місяців тому

      @@whyamipod Nah, I am more of a communication facilitator (like you) than a teacher. I hear you about sharing yourself with the world. One distinction I make between a real educator and an institutional functionary who refers to themself as a Prof. or teacher ... is that the educator understands the most important that can be shared in the classroom (or out) is our selves. As an academic, I am really just a blue-collar academic without much of a blip on/in the publish-or-perish racket. Before coming to Japan, I kicked around a bit ... summers either as a mountain firefighter in Arizona or beach lifeguard in North Carolina, cleaned the floors at department stores and convenience stores, observed lab rats in a cancer research station, and just enjoyed life. I was unpleasantly surprised to find that English departments in Japanese colleges could not care less about real-life experience because they are staffed with the same kind of people you described ... the 'good' student who went straight to grad school and then into teaching. It took me decades to find out that 'human rights and dignity' have a slightly different meaning in Japan, and that as far as institutions go, I was and never will be more than a token foreigner. I am thankful to have friends here, mostly Japanese, and have continued with the fishing, camping, music, and an occasional beer. Some great movies, music, writers, and podcasts help keep me sane and remind me of my roots and values. But with the world turning upside down as it is, maybe sanity is a bit over-rated. 🥸

    • @whyamipod
      @whyamipod 7 місяців тому

      @@stevemartin4249 I've never heard anyone in academia articulate that...the most important thing shared in a classroom is ourselves. It feels like the truth, though I've never heard it. LOLOL, I've lived a lot of lives and done some random stuff myself...from working at WalMart to fixing trailer houses. Every experience is valuable...I've grown from everything I've ever done...even if it was learning I don't ever want to do that again LOL. I suppose knowing where you stand and making peace with it is good...that rather than rail against it. Well, I'm glad you've found what is truly important in the world, and am pleased to be some connection to home each week :)

    If you listen to interviews of Chris Hatfield who became an astronaut including commanding the ISS for a tour, like Quinn stated, he also just didn’t stop to think why he shouldn’t or couldn’t do a next step to get closer to his goal of becoming an astronaut. When he started his journey, there was no Canadian Space Agency and no Canadian astronauts but he saw the qualifications needed by those that existed in the then USSR and USA a pursued them regardless.

    Regarding the Peter Principle (promoted until incompetent) which was mentioned… I kept climbing the technical “ladder” at my workplace until I found myself in a position that I could only excel at if I worked in a manner that made me feel miserable. And if I worked in a manner where I felt less miserable I found the quality of my work to be unacceptable. So I asked for and was granted a demotion (including less pay) back to where I had come from and everybody was happy again. I consider myself lucky to be able to and proud that I realized I needed to for everyone’s benefit.

There is enough overlap of interests that it's kind of odd that it didn't happen six or seven years ago. That said, the more of her videos and videos of her that I see, the more I am convinced that she doesn't have a clue as to how really talented she is, not just in her areas of interest, but across the entire population. This interview in particular demonstrates how much more qualified she is to be a CEO of an extremely large corporation than well over 90% of the folks who have those jobs.
