Springtime Landscape Photography In Yosemite
In early May, I spent a few days in Yosemite for some springtime nature photography. I tend to make a trip around this time every year but spring weather is a real gamble in Yosemite Valley. This year had a stark contrast from my trip last year, and I was more motivated to photograph because of it. The vibrant spring colors and melting snow made for beautiful compositions with exploding waterfalls all over the valley. Follow a long as I spend 3 days in one of most beautiful national parks in the United States. Thanks for following along!
Safe Travels,
Jared

This is my first photography trip of 2024 and as is customary, we head to Death Valley for a few days of photography. • @jake9bates
      @jake9bates 5 місяців тому

      I know you’re not asking me this question, but that’s just not true. The camera CAN make a difference depending on what you’re doing. If you are taking pictures of landscapes and want to print out pictures and blow them up / frame them.. then yeah you’ll probably want something that has high megapixels. But the equipment itself doesn’t make you a good photographer. You can have a $200 used dslr from Facebook marketplace, but spending $3,000 on a new fancy mirrorless camera won’t make you better. Just like when you post a great photo online and someone comments “wow you have a really nice camera” like yeah I agree, but the camera isn’t the one who found the right frame / composition, decided the settings, etc etc. You are what makes you a good or bad photographer. Use what you have and can afford and have fun with it 👍🏼

    • @jaredboazphoto
      @jaredboazphoto 5 місяців тому

      jakebates4903 kinda nailed that but i'll put in my thoughts as well. In order to be a better photographer you need to put in the work to understand good composition techniques, knowing whatever camera you are using well, and being able to post process well enough to bring your photos to life or tell the story you want to tell. An expensive camera is useless if you don't know the fundamentals or how to make a compelling image. Gear matters when you are being held back in some way from a creative or technical standpoint. Learn the fundamentals I mentioned and then worry about what camera you are using if you feel it is holding you back in some way. Until then just shoot a bunch, make a bunch of mistakes, and learn from them. I appreciate you watching and commenting! Also the 5DS R is a great camera and is quite capable.

    Nice! I love What's in My Bag videos - always curious how other folks are doing things. Now just to get you to Nikon... ;) I always hear good things about the Osprey bags, if they were to make a camera bag, I'd consider it. I think another bag I'd like to try is Atlas Packs camera bags. I know a few people that use them and they might be the mythical blend of comfort (like the Osprey), but the efficiency of a bag made for photographers. I really like FLM tripods as well. If you get the chance, try to the L4 version. I held off for a long time, but I've really come to like the extra height. I still travel with my S4, but regionally I tend to take my L4. Both are super quality. And nice to hear that the FLM compares well to the RRS (I have actually never used a RRS). Great video!

    • @jaredboazphoto
      @jaredboazphoto 5 місяців тому

      haha yeah I don't want to switch anymore. It is a big pain, I was reluctant to go back to Canon but I really do like their system. I've heard good things about Atlas, I tried them a number of years back but couldn't get the fit right with them either. It's probably a me thing but the Osprey with an insert is pretty good for now. I'm sure it will change again at some point lol. I actually have the L4 too, I had it last year in DV but wanted something a little smaller and lighter and the S4 is really nice. I lose a little height but not much but I still have it when I want something taller. But yeah the quality is very close to RRS for a fraction of the price. I will say I prefer the rubber twist locks of RRS but I think the metal ones on FLM last longer. Thanks for watching buddy!

    Nice video Jared. Interesting thoughts on the backpack. I switched to the Action X50 last summer and it is by far the most comfortable & durable photo-backpack I have ever used. I always used "cheap" LowePro models that killed my shoulders. That said I am sure something like that Osprey is way more comfortable overall. The hikes/outings I take are usually no more than 7-8 miles though. That tripod looks killer, I may look into that. I am way overdue for a new one. Your Canon setup is awesome. I am jealous. I am still rocking the 7D Mark II, EF 24-105 f4 and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6. Eventually I'll make the jump to mirrorless. At least my EF lenses will switch over so I don't have to totally start from scratch

    • @jaredboazphoto
      @jaredboazphoto 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for your thoughts and thanks for watching Josh! Yeah, I mean everyone is different but I have always been not that impressed with the camera specific bags as far as harness and weight distribution goes but that's just my experience. The Osprey works out pretty well for now. Who knows where I'll be with it in a year or two. Honestly the FLM tripods are excellent. Top quality and quite reasonably priced. Thanks! I love the Canon R system. It's really nice they adapt the EF mount into their R lineup so people don't have to buy brand new lenses. From what I've heard it works pretty seamlessly with the R bodies.

    Great shots and insights! I also really like the calming, relaxed relaxing atmosphere of your editing style Any tips for a first-timer to Yosemite? I planned a 3.5-day trip in early March to avoid crowds and hopefully capture the tail end of winter

      Hey thanks so much for the kind words! Yosemite is great, it just gets real busy. Mid week is probably best if you can swing it but that shouldn't deter you. There are quiet areas to be found away from the main popular locations. I'd say make sure you know if you need a reservation to be in the park (not talking about lodging), they are starting a reservation system this year for a good part of the year to help alleviate some congestion in the park. I can't remember when you need them for though, so make sure you have that ironed out. If you're going in early march you might get some decent winter conditions depending on how snow goes this year. I went in mid april last year and the trees were all still dormant. If the weather is going to be snowy, make sure you have chains with you if you don't have a 4WD car or truck and bring layers of clothing to warm up or cool off. There are places to get food and provisions in the park if you forget something, it's kind of like outdoor disneyland with the amount of people/conveniences they have built into the park now. That is what sticks out off the top of my head, let me know if you have any other questions! And thanks for watching!

      @@jaredboazphoto Thank you for the detailed response! Really appreciate it, will keep in mind to check the weather weeks before and have proper equipment/reservations ready. I'll also head out early in the morning to hopefully avoid large crowds since I plan to visit the known hotspots Just one photography question, did you find yourself using a tripod? I'm debating on whether to bring mine in case I want to do some long exposures, but it's an additional ~6lb with the head attached and it sticks out regardless of how I mount it on my backpack. No regrets taking it with me if it pays off with a great shot of course, but as someone who doesn't go hiking often I'm not sure what to expect when it comes to weight management. My backpack has hip straps that should ideally distribute the load from a 24-120 and 150-500 + a potential tripod away from my shoulders Edit: just realized you use a tripod in the video at 7:23, I suppose that answers it!

      Yeah it’s been fine, It’s not for off-roading really since it’s fwd but it does fine on light dirt roads and the like. But it’s not a 4x4 so I stick to main roads a lot unless I can’t.

    Great video. Love those images. The image of the tree with golden light contrast at 11:42 and a few more after that are captivating. That looks like eastern sierra. I love your artistic view of these intimate shots. You were using RF100-500 or EF100-400? I love using my RF70-200 a lot. I should use RF100-500 more, cheers great stuff

      Aw thank you my friend. Really appreciate that. That photo is actually from Lassen Volcanic National Park. And that was from my brief time back on Sony, that was the FE 100-400. Now that I’m back on Canon I will be shooting primarily with the 100-500 though. That’s my favorite lens ever I think.

    Zion never disappoints. I was there earlier this year in late spring. Had the chance to spend time in the east side of the park for the first time. Very quiet and peaceful. Nice images of the Narrows!

    Love the eastern Sierra videos, I spend time in the same areas. I was just curious if you still have the van camper, or did you swap it for this truck set-up? I car camp because I like my little car gas mileage, especially if one needs to get a few gallons in a place like Lee Vining! Probably the most expensive gas in California. I enjoy your videos, Chris.

      We still have the van, I just got my truck setup for when I’m going alone. The van has weird dimensions so I’m more comfortable driving it when I have a second person to spot me in certain situations. Yeah the gas out there was wild lol. Thanks watching, Chris! I really appreciate it :)
