I have played on both quite a bit. It has to be Stormcloaks for me. The Nords could kick the Thalmors butt just as easily as the Redguards did in Hammerfell. A big factor to that is they have a god (Talos) on their side.

I appreciate that you brought religious responsibility to the argument. Stormcloaks have a goal that over rides all other matters. Loyalty to Talos. Yes that might be difficult to grasp by people who don't buy into religion. In the real planet earth, people willing to kill over religious beliefs are guilty of zealotry on behalf of possible deities. On Nirn the Gods these people are fighting over are proven real.

I'm not even sure Stormcloaks winning is that good for the Thalmor, so long as the war is won quickly. Being independent, they can help out Hammerfell (who are actually doing well on their own) against the Aldmeri Dominion without worrying about breaking any treaties. Also as someone else mentioned, Gods in this universe are unquestionably real and powerful. Talos is the hero-God and protector of humanity, and worship is the conduit that can be used to harness his power, so fighting for worship of Talos while on the surface doesn't seem logical, is actually very logical.

I think you have some good points and personal details in this. i will say, some points you made felt like they would hold more weight irl and not in nirn. if you could give me some examples of talos punishing nords in the afterlife, i'd be interested in more lore about that. i'm having trouble finding any on that and i think that would have backed up your point. i did see that shor is the god that rewards nords with sovngarde, not talos. this a completely different religious system with different gods who are not doubted to exist. they function differently than many of the current major religions gods are believed to irl. what i'm trying to say is, it's not about one god rewarding or punishing in nirn. and from what i've gathered about elder scrolls, seems like morality isn't even a gigantic factor when it comes to the sovngarde for the nords unless there was some daedric pact. even if they were a hero in their last moment, they could be soul trapped and end up in soul cairn instead. i'm not an expert about this lore but i find it interesting. and thanks for your different perspective on things

The one that always annoys me is how people act like Ulfric Skyrim is just inherently doomed to the Thalmor. Its not. Skyrim is on the opposite side of the continent to the Thalmor and the Thalmor are incompetent at occupying territory due to their extreme racism. And an alliance with Hammerfall or even with the Empire against the Thalmor is perfectly possible

There's no proof that Skyrim will fail if they secede from the empire. Hammerfell won and the empire is already done, it's dead, gone, they are too weak.

Maxson you are applying ideas to the game which fit your real religion, when those ideas are not appropriate to the religion in the game. For example, Talos does not punish people in the afterlife for what they do while alive. Your comment that the people of Skyrim cannot afford to displease Talos is nonsense, Talos doesn't keep track of "sin" like the Christian, Jewish or Muslim God does. In Skyrim, it is Shor who rewards Nords with Soverngarde if they die in battle honorably. Talos has nothing to do with it. Your analysis and logic is filled with similar mistakes because you assume the game's religion is similar to yours. It isn't.

When it comes to this type of debate one has to realize that both sides can be right in their own way. The issue here tho is that the two cultures that being the empire and skyrim are completely different on how they do things. One one hand it is a sound strategy for the empire to bide its time with the thalmor until their strength is recovered enough to face the thalmor in another battle. If not for the treaty another chance would not happen. That said the stormcloaks are not wrong either as they are in fact a victim of circumstance when it comes to the empire's decision. This was never discussed with anyone in skyrim whether or not the condition of not worshiping talos was acceptable and the empire just expected the citizens of skyrim to just go with it with no explanation. One could see this as them not understanding the value talos has to the skyrim people as shown in many conversations you can hear from imperial soldiers as well as general Tallius himself as he states he does not understand the ways of the stormcloaks because to him the rebels are fighting not for religious freedom but for some other unjust cause to imped on their efforts. In the end it is a failure to communicate and understand one another as the empire expects skyrim to fall in line with one of those trust me bro moments meanwhile the stormcloaks are blinded by beliefs to look at a bigger picture.

I notice a lot of Civil War videos couch the argument in a "pragmatism/practicality vs virtue/spiritualism/honor" way... but this is completely dishonest. There is no pragmatism in immediately accepting outrageous peace terms when your enemy is almost as badly cripple by war as you are. There is no practicality in disbanding your own intelligence agency and allowing your enemy free access to your territories and aristocracy to mingle, rub shoulders, and do clandestine activity without reprisal. There is no practicality in destroying and spitting on the founding ideals, religion, and figurehead of your civilization to appease your enemy and alienate your own people. There will be no second Great War, the Empire will never fight the Dominion of it's own free will ever again. It's been 26 years, there are no indications (beyond bs spouted by Tullius) the Empire will truly fight the Dominion. Troops at the borders is an irrelevant placation when Thalmor agents have free access to Imperial territories and people. There are Thalmor agents rubbing shoulders with Imperial aristocracy. The Thalmor are allowed to move through the Empire unsupervised, do you have any idea how fucking insane that is? Even if the Empire was prepared to fight another great war (it's been 26 years already btw), the veterans from before are getting old, while the elven vets are still in prime condition. A more unified, less demoralized, more righteous Empire already lost once, now we have a more fractured, more demoralized, more dishonest Empire, that's been infested by unsupervised Thalmor sabatoge and infiltration for decades. It'll be a fucking cakewalk, not to mention the Dominion has other races who can replenish their numbers just as easily as humans. An independent Skyim, and independent Hammerfell, allied with a smaller Empire and possibly even Black Marsh in a triple or quadruple military alliance stands a much better chance of winning.
