Scenes and songs from the First National Tour of "Les Misérables" in 1991.
Les Misérables 1991 The Runaway Cart
Gary Morris as Jean Valjean, Richard Kinsey as Javert
[VOICE (spoken)]
Look out, it's a runaway cart!
[VARIOUS TOWNSPEOPLE (overlapping)]
Look at that
Look at that
It's Monsieur Fauchelevant
Don't approach
Don't go near
At the risk of your life
He is caught by the wheel
Oh, the pitiful man
Stay away, turn away
There is nothing to do
There is nothing to do
[VALJEAN]
Is there anyone here who will rescue the man
Who will help me to shoulder the weight of the cart?
[VARIOUS TOWNSPEOPLE]
Don't go near him, M'suier Mayor
The load is heavy as hell
The old man's a goner for sure
It'll kill you as well
[Valjean lifts the cart on his own and rescues Fauchelevant.]
[FAUCHELEVANT]
M'sieur le Mayor, I have no words
You come from God, you are a saint
[JAVERT]
Can this be true? I don't believe what I see
A man your age to be as strong as you are
A memory stirs, you make me think of a man...
From years ago, a man who broke his parole
He disappeared...
Forgive me, sir, I would not dare
[VALJEAN]
Say what you must, don't leave it there
[JAVERT]
I have only known one other
Who can do what you have done
He's a convict from the chain gang
He's been ten years on the run
But he couldn't run forever
We have found his hideaway
And he's just been re-arrested
And he comes to court today
Well, of course he now denies it
You'd expect that of a con
But he couldn't run forever
No, not even Jean Valjean
[VALJEAN]
You say this man denies it all
And gives no sign of understanding
Or repentance?
You say this man is going to trial
And that's he's sure to be returned
To serve his sentence?
Come to that, can you be sure
That I am not your man?
[JAVERT]
I have known the thief for ages
Tracked him down through thick and thin
And to make the matter certain
There's the brand upon his skin
He will bend, he will break
This time there is no mistake

God, the horrific visual of him taking the tooth out of that dude's head. What a horrific person. And that's only scratching the surface of the evil he's capable of. Chilling.
I don't think you zoomed in enough. I could almost tell what was going on and clearly, thats not your goal. I could almost see the amazing set they built and clearly, thats not what you want either.
I apologize for all my shortcomings.
This is my Joker 2
Maravillosa!❤
The very best Young Cosette Ever!!! Your Mom must be so proud of you❤❤❤
Who’s chopping onions here?
Mr Gunther has the Mini Michael Ball.
He Gary Morris sings wind beneath my wings
Is this a proshot?
I shot this and own the only copy.
@ Oh wow. You did an excellent job!
Thanks 😀
Always affected me so deeply. It brings back memories of how it is to be a tiny, terrified child. Although I was lucky in that I had loving parents. Cosette had nothing, only cruelty and hatred. The song is so simple but it is beautiful in its simplicity.
They’re all great
I always felt sorry for eponine that he left her behind when he had to know she'd be abused/neglected too
Gary Morris, the great American country singer, was a great Valjean, up there with any of the best who played this great character
Pretty close to the novel with respect Fantine; on another note that was country singer Gary Morris (probably the greatest and most versatile voice in country music)
Dang, these older productions weren't afraid to be dark. Excellent acting from little Cosette and Mme. Thenardier
This is a great Bamatabois, the Javert lacks musical speed, I know its meant to seem ordered but its a bit strange.
These Thenardiers aren't as pleasing on the ear, but I'd say they're a riot in the best way. EDIT: I've changed my mind, Drew is actually pretty good musically in this. He's just doing a funny accent.
Éponine: 'Parnasse, what are you doing So far out of our patch? Montparnasse: This house, we're going to do it Rich man, plenty of scratch You remember he's the one Who got away the other day Got a number on his chest Perhaps a fortune put away! Éponine: Oh Lord, somebody help me! Dear God, what'll I do? He'll think this is an ambush He'll think I'm in it too! What'll I do, what'll I say? I've got to warn them here I've got to find a way. [Thénardier arrives with the rest of his gang.] Thénardier: This is his lair I've seen the old fox around He keeps himself to himself He's staying close to the ground I smell profit here! Ten years ago He came and paid for Cosette I let her go for a song It's time we settled the debt This'll cost him dear Brujon: What do I care Who you should rob Give me my share Finish the job! Thénardier: You shut your mouth Give me your hand [He notices Éponine but doesn't recognize her.] Brujon: What have we here? Thénardier: Who is this hussy? Babet: It's your brat Éponine Don't you know your own kid Why's she hanging about you? Thénardier: Éponine, get on home You're not needed in this We're enough here without you Éponine: I know this house I tell you there's nothing here for you Just the old man and the girl They live ordinary lives Thénardier: Don't interfere You've got some gall Take care, young miss, You've got a lot to say! Brujon: She's going soft Claquesous: Happens to all Montparnasse: Go home, 'Ponine, Go home, you're in the way Éponine: I'm gonna scream, I'm gonna warn them here. Thénardier: One little scream and you'll regret it for a year. Claquesous: What a palaver What an absolute treat To watch a cat and its father Pick a bone in the street. Brujon: Not a sound out of you! Éponine: Well I told you I'd do it, told you I'd do it! [She screams.] Thénardier: You wait my girl, you'll rue this night I'll make you scream, you'll scream all right! Leave her to me, don't wait around Make for the sewers, go underground! [The gang scatters.] Marius: It was your cry sent them away Once more 'Ponine saving the day Dearest Cosette, my friend 'Ponine Brought me to you, showed me the way! Someone is near Let's not be seen Somebody's here... [Marius and Éponine leave quickly as Valjean enters.] Valjean: My God, Cosette I heard a cry in the dark I heard the shout of angry voices in the street. Cosette: That was my cry you heard, Papa. I was afraid of what they'd do. They ran away when they heard my cry Valjean: Cosette, my child, what will become of you? Cosette: Three men I saw beyond the wall Three men in shadow moving fast Valjean: This is a warning to us all These are the shadows of the past Must be Javert! He's found my cover at last! I've got to get Cosette away Before they return! We must get away from shadows They will never let us be Tomorrow to Calais Then a ship across the sea! Hurry, Cosette, prepare to leave and say no more Tomorrow we'll away! Hurry, Cosette, it's time to close another door And live another day
Where can I find the sheet music or score of the complete epilogue?
Out of the full live performance non-anniversary recordings of the epilogues now on UA-cam, this is the best acted most emotional version.
I would very legitimately negotiate paying for a full copy of this since it seems its yours personally, if thats something you're interested in and you eber happen to see this comment i suppose. Thank you for sharing this
E-mail me if you'd like to discuss.
@@ACMalleti will, I realized to do that by now that was a comment made at 3am blazed as hell so I didn't notice the big email over all of this lmao.
Drive a bus through that vibrato. Utterly awful.
Circa 1987, Gary was my first Valjean, though in those days (my early 20s) I disdained musicals as trivial and whimsical. But this was so deep and unique that I experienced every emotion including being brought to tears twice... the show completely changed my outlook. I can still remember getting into a cab after and just feeling dazed. My fiancé and I were in NY on an otherwise budget trip: staying in someone's apartment when they were out of town, using public transit, eating on the cheap. The one splurge was dinner at Cafe Luxembourg followed by this show - my Dad had bought us tickets and the seats were excellent. One of the best nights of my life. Thanks to the person who posted it and thanks to the cast for such an amazing effort. Now in my late 50's, I still see this show whenever I can (with the same date, married from 1988 to present). :)
Where did you find these!? I’ve been looking for something like this!
I recorded this myself (with the help of two technicians). I own the only copy.
3:05 love grantaire just walking past with the bottle lmao
Is this broadway?
@@royperez8965 It's the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles.
This is the 1st U.S. National Tour (Valjean Company) in Los Angeles @ the Pantages Theatre in January 1991. This was filmed on opening night (20 January) or the first preview (13 January). Not sure but it has to be one of those two dates. It played in L.A. through 9 March 1991. There were three U.S. national tours at the time. There was the 2nd National Tour (Fantine Company) which was wrapping up a little over a year run in San Francisco, and the 3rd National Tour (Marius Company) which had just wrapped up a week of performances in Wilmington, DE, and was heading for its next stop; another week of performances in Springfield, IL. The show was in its 4th year on Broadway at the time. The production premiered on Broadway @ the Broadway Theatre on 12 March 1987 and remained there until October 1990 when it was transferred to the nearby Imperial Theatre because the show's producer Cameron Mackintosh wanted to open Miss Saigon at the Broadway Theatre. The original Broadway production ran for 16 years, closing on 18 May 2003. Probably way more information than you requested but, what can I say? I'm crazy about this show. =)
0:55 I think Fantine’s corset string became loose, so her cast mates were doing it up for her
0:41 I love how Cosette was trying to save her dad
I saw this tour in 1991 in LA, on a drama club trip as a junior in high school. In a way it did change my life, I appeared in productions in college, and helped me to show my children the wonder of the performing arts. Thank you for posting these, as I never thought I would see Gary Morris as he was on that night again. I imagine the tapes of that night may have deteriorated over the years, so to have it available digitally is one of the wonders of this age. Thank you so much for sharing.
god although i wouldn't say he's my favorite, i love this javert so much. of all the different versions i heard, he easily put the most emotion into this song and it's so good the verse at 1:41 especially is just so damn good
beautiful girl
This is the zombie version

Judy kuhn is the best cosette
Is there a way to watch this full play ?
Sorry, no. Not unless you come to my house.😁
@@ACMallet oh.. that's so unfortunate..
How did you get these videos????
1:27 idk why but this line is just so satisfying and smooth to hear😭 shame many modern productions leave this whole beginning part out
To me the best is at 1:17. Says so much about the character. Doesn't care about morals. Just about satisfying his own needs and wants as better as he is able to.
@@lampyrisnoctiluca9904my favorite part is the Waterloo segment at 0:28. Not only does it establish Thenardier’s lack of morals, it also foreshadows him stealing from the dead soldiers in act 2 and emphasizes that this kind of disgusting behavior is just par for the course for him.
@@caleb1413 yes. that is also important.
HOW/WHERE did you get this footage? You have NO idea what nostalgia all of these videos brings me.
It seems like they were just at this show and hired a camera crew, great find for me as well
One of the best acted Gavroche scenes I've seen. To be honest, Gavroche usually sounds all right on cast recordings, (especially the complete symphonic), but live on stage the actors sometimes talk-sing more than sing and the rhythm gets lost in juvenile stage business or awkward direction. Here the young lads sounds awesome, acts well and is very believable.
And looks like bro was having the time of his life doing this part! I'm sure that was a core memory getting to be in Les Mis however many times he was
4:34 💖
Gary Morris is my favorite singer. I saw this in 1991. Great job
Wow. I've seen a lot of Les Amis in my day, but this might be my favorite rendition of this scene. Enjolras, Marius and Grantaire all capture their characters and their little moments here absolutely perfectly. There's a lot more than just pretty voices behind these characters. Seriously among the best I've ever seen.
I've heard a good few and this is probably my favorite rendition too, it's a different skill to be able to do a great job acting while delivering amazing vocaly
Michael Ball and Lea Salonga are the best doing this one.
This was my first show. I was a rebellious teenager, and I sat in stunned silence the entire time. I had no idea what it was about. But I was forever changed. ❤
Even as someone who's agnostic and very not religious I agree, I like seeing moments of beauty that come out of faith like this
I LOVE THIS JAVERTTTTTTTT
Oh, they’re grotesque but I kinda love them. Love this Marius. Also damn, the makeup on the other two is a lot this close up
A bit of trivia that isn't mentioned in the musical is that Gavroch was the Therniader's son.
Lea is the only Eponie for me
Compared to Frances??????
Nobody comes to Queen Lea Salonga
