African Homestead
United States
Приєднався 25 жов 2017
After 20 years of climbing the corporate ladder and chasing the American Dream, I moved my family to Liberia. Since 2011 we have been partnering with the citizen's of Liberia to heal their country holistically (spiritually, physically, socially, and economically).
For more than a decade, we have done everything from running a for-profit Business as Missions company, to working in an Ebola Treatment Unit, to community development projects, to traditional missionary work. Now, we are preparing for our biggest change yet... moving from a walled compound in the capital city of Monrovia to a off-grid homestead deep in the jungle. This channel will chronicle our journey.

About the African Homestead:
In 2018, my family and I relocated from Liberia's capital city, Monrovia, to the edge of a small village in the interior of the country.
On this channel, we will cover many aspects of homesteading and self-sufficiency / self-reliance. Subjects will be a mix of vlogs and DIY projects, including primitive and modern construction, solar power, micro-hydro power (hopefully), selectively harvesting trees and milling lumber on-site for the construction of our house and other structures, Practicing Farming God's Way, natural farming, permaculture, and organic agriculture that includes kitchen gardens, food forests, composting, and more, all in a tropical environment.
We will also cover multiple types of livestock. Everything from raising chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs, and (maybe) cows, ranging from breeding, to milking, to butchering.
As part of self sufficiency, after growing our own food, we will share how to preserve it, from curing and smoking meats like bacon, to canning and fermenting veggies from the garden. Of course, we will be sharing some of our favorite recipes too!
On many of these endeavors, we will be learning as we go, which means we will make mistakes and have failures, all of which, we will share with you.
Thanks for joining us on the journey!

Tour of Beyond Organics Farm with James Maginot
I have dug a hole - 2m diameter by 800mm deep. Unfortunately it is heavy clay with extremely poor drainage. It is on the top of a fairly teep hill. I'm wondering whether I need to put ag pipe in the bottom of the hole to slowly drain out to the hill so I don't end up with a pond with rotten organic matter, rather than OM breaking down to compost with some air available to the process
Thankyou
Good information

So nice to see people interested in soil 👋Greetings from Canada 💌
Awesome recipe ! Thank you 🙏
You suck, how much do you use? How often do you use it?
Do you have to support the trees from wind? If so, how do you do that when it's in a circle like this?
But Washing Machine / Bathroom / Sink Waste water contains the chemicsls (Shampoo, Soap, Detergent) Wondering wat type of Organic Farming you've done 🤔🤔🤔
Thanks for your information, can you help me to make a water source as l will be starting farming afresh....
Europe don't have poppi circles or somthing?
Smart move to funnel waste water from the kitchen and outdoor shower. 😊
Excellent video! Great info. Going to make one in North Georgia! USA
Thank you
Thank you very much for the great work you are doing in Liberia.
Your videos are amazing! If you like farming or harvesting videos, I look forward to having you visit my channel to have relaxing moments together!
Brilliant tutorial
Sweat hornets. Tip nose, tip toung, and right between eyes
Lol
Well down where I'm from they would probably be called Guinea wasps
Omg your hilarious
Poor thing! What kind of insect? Sounds nightmarish.
Glad to see the Lord still does gardening, especially with the toils of today.
Amen
Do you filter the kitchen water at all before sending it off to the banana circle? We are in Greece and use lots of oils in our cooking. I would be concerned that the oils would inhibit decomposition.
That’s a great question! We do not filter our grey water coming from the kitchen sink and washing machine. However, the only oil we put down the kitchen drain is residual oil on our pots and pans that we remove with soap and water. If we need to dispose of larger amounts of oil, like for frying chicken, then we dispose of that elsewhere. On a related note, we also limit the amount of bleach we use, since that kills soil microbial life in the banana circle. Are you planning a circle garden? What will you plant?
@@africanhomestead Yes, we are more or less the same in our habits then. Still, I am thinking I am not going to risk it due to the smells associated with kitchen greywater. Our banana circle will sit right on the edge between Zone 1 and 2, close to the house and my partner has a sensitive nose.
I'm very curious about your toileting operation for the family and employees.
I'm curious why you wanted to avoid burning? Had you considered a herd of pigs to root all that area out? I'm glad you've had such good results.
I’m enjoying your technique of presentation on really good information. I’m learning a lot for my own mini food forest here in Belize. Thank you 🙏
Thanks! There are also some great channels based in Central America. I’m glad this one was helpful!
Great tutorial: tight, concise, informative, and not a lot of blah blah. I got some great ideas, with you giving me the whys and wherefores of things. Good job🙏
Thank you for the encouragement! I’m glad is was helpful. I try not to pad my videos with unnecessary stories or unrelated information. Please feel free to provide feedback anytime!
We) you not doing anything 😂😂
The sweat in my shirt would disagree. 😅
Thank you for this video. This is very interesting. I'm going to try it.
Thanks! Tell me how it goes! 👍🏼
Thanks man, great stuff, can't wait to try it.
Have fun!
Very good design elements. How far from the eaves do u plan to put the passionfruit vine?
Great question! I plan on moving the permanent trellis about 3 ft/1m away from the house eves. This will minimize the vines reaching over to the house and growing up the roof or entering the attic space, which is a big problem with the current placement. With that, I plan on raising it about 12-18 inches/30-45 centimeters to prevent that 4 pm sun from directly shining in, while allowing more indirect light. I’ve learned it’s important to severely trim back the vine from the top of the trellis after it completes the fruiting cycle. Otherwise it will develop a thick and impenetrable mat that will prevent fruit from dropping through.
What is your contact number?
What did you use for your poles?
Great question! I used 1/2 inch/12mm steel rod (rebar). It is relatively inexpensive and readily available here in Liberia.
Could have at least put some decent wheels on it.
And look like every other classic car on the road? No thanks! I love my granny hubcaps!
@@africanhomestead That's just LAME.
@@Thirdgen83 Guilty as charged! 🤷🏻♂️😂
Great content. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I spent months or research and observation before starting the project.
do you let it sit uncovered, pls? i got mine on balcony, should i cover it or not, pls?
Great question! I left mine uncovered. Also, you will want to keep it out of the direct sun. Thanks for watching!
They do not have a UA-cam channel?
They did when I made the video, but it’s since been deleted.
Tell this to the farmers and they’ll laugh at you… farming is much like our medical field problems… insurance has ruined it and chemical companies are making big bucks
Preach it, brother!
I’m a rancher myself. Farmers irritate me
very nice. good info
Thank you. I’m glad it was helpful. 👍🏼
N-n-nine inches...😰
😅
Mystery plant at 3:03 - is that katuk?
No, it’s not Katuk. The leaves look similar, but are much smaller on my bush.
Welcome home!
Thanks, Jeff!

Thanks for sharing! This bring back some memories from my childhood and early teenage. Back in the 60's and 70's we mixed the concrete by hand when we built the foundation for a 65sqm cabin/summerhouse and our 20sqm boat house in a place with no running water or electricity at that time. Luckily there was a small stream with clean water nearby. We had to carry everything els by hand, so it was a long process of hard work even if the whole family where helping us. The cabin was a few hundred meter uphill and the boat house was equally downhill from the road. Even we younger ones developed thick hard skin in our hands at that time. Just wonder how today's teenagers in the west would handle such hard work...
Yes, I’ll never forget the experience. You probably cannot tell in the video, but my shirt is soaked with the sweat from a hard day’s work!
