Hello I’m Dakota I’ve got a 1974 Trans am that I work on and drive and a 1981 camaro. I’m always messing with old cars one way or another and I’m starting to get it on video. Thanks for checking out my channel.
1977 Pontiac 400 Engine swap is it really 200hp????
My 455 engine I had got sick so I used a different engine I had. This 80,000 mile 1977 Pontiac 400 is no slouch and I think will be a very reliable street engine. Thanks for watching.

Don’t worry, adding American parts, won’t fix garbage! When you drop a seat, break a valve & tear up your engine, I’m sure it will be cheap to repair! Don’t forget the machine shop time you will put into your junk 🙄🙄🙄🙄!
You don’t know that
That dude on your thumb nail is the North Korean dictator.
Yes I know
When you see a cylinder head with the words made in china stay stay away if you had to give a thousand more it would be worth it somewhere there’s inferior material hope you don’t get bitten

It’s not a 801 model,
What cc combustion chambers? Are they as advertized?
I did not measure them, Im enlarging them to hopefully 75-78cc to work with a 455 on pump gas
@@dakotastimeout2827 Piston selection matters a lot due to the number and location of the valve reliefs. A set of single valve relief CP pistons, a 76cc chamber, with a .030 head gasket will give you great results on pump gas Pontiac at 463 inches. -using a 041 style camshaft.
@@RealDougFields ya I’ve thought about ram air IV cam with the IVC a about 48 degrees and I have even thought about one of Butler performances roller cams on a 114lsa
@@dakotastimeout2827 I had a 463 with #96 D-port 87cc heads and a 041 bullet blueprint cam running 1.65 rockers for .516 lift. It was 10-1 with a 780 vac sec Holley and factory intake. It made 560 ish on 93 octane in 1987. With the parts available today- everyone should make 750+.
@@RealDougFields wow that’s good! For the square bore on the iron intake did you just drill and tap new holes?
What intake are you running? I have a torker II and I know I'm going to need something like this.
That’s a performer rpm, I think the torker and torker ii you can get by with the factory air cleaners.
👍🤘
Is that this one? I might grab it for mine. Summit Racing™ Exhaust System Pro Packs 05-0014
It is not, that kit includes headers for a Chevrolet and is 2.25” diameter pipes. The one I used is SUM-680101. The one I bought does not include headers I got those separately.

Jim was a legend! He would of ported iron heads and used a ram air iv cam. I’m doing it different. KRE D port heads and lunati bracket master 230/230 292 110lsa .490lift.
I think Jim Hand did eventually go with aluminum heads in his station wagon

Good to see improvements coming to that engine!
Yes sir! We’re talking aluminum heads and bigger camshaft! Should almost double the power.
@@dakotastimeout2827 I hope you'll be at NNN.
I need advice badly...I have the same carb and got a rebuild kit because the accelerator pump was leaking...now when I press the throttle I have no fuel squirting out the squirters..please help lol
Do you have it adjusted right, they say you should be able to put a 10 thousandths feeler gauge in there. Sounds like it might be tightened too much.
@@dakotastimeout2827 yes sir..cars runs and idles fine..take a minute to start it but when it starts it runs smoothly...but if I press the pedal to hard to fast it will go dead...and like i said noticed no fuel coming out the squirter
Whats holding the scoop in position on top of this system? It isnt just lying on top of filter top end?
We have the same model, almost done restoring it. will be mostly for show and storage cast iron cookware. It's missing the cole dump handle and top plat removal tool.
CHINA is Stealing our technology and unselling the company they stolen from and you are supporting that.. Support your neighbor Not CHINA.. WAKE UP PEOPLE.. you cant pay me to except anything from China
China has been stealing Hot Rod technology for a while, even HOT ROD magazine mensioned this to make money from us.
Better check what country made whatever device you typed this from 😂
Look if Butler engines is willing to put their program tech into a set of these.... how junky can they be ? Kif what's off with them can be corrected then they are worth the pocket change they cost.
You can buy just the filter from butler performance, it’s $89
Ya I saw that! At the time it wasn’t available separate like that.
@@dakotastimeout2827 do you have good performance with the drop base kit? I’m thinking about getting one but I’ve heard a drop base isn’t great for horsepower. What I have now is kinda janky though so I don’t think it would be worse lol
@@kenstirling5348 I ran that car open carb and with the drop base and I felt no difference. That engine is no longer in the car but it was a 400+ horsepower 455. I wish I would of took it off when I went to the track but I was so inconsistent it wouldn’t of told me much anyway.
@@kenstirling5348 but if your about to get in a drag race I would just take the shaker off and take the lid and filter out and put the shaker back on the base and you should be in good shape.
@@dakotastimeout2827 what times were you running at the track? I have a 77 with a 461 stroked and super T10. Only an 1/8 mile track near me and I seem to be in the 8.7@86mph range. I have 3.23 rear gear and I was having a lot of trouble getting good launches and good shifts
Decent heads, a fellow I went to school with runs 5.70’s in a sunbird with these heads , cnc’d at butler with their 340 edelbrock program
Wow!
@@dakotastimeout2827 guess I wasn’t clear because everyone is racing 1/8th mile. That is 1/8th mile time
@@doomman700 it don’t hurt to be specific, there is one in every crowd lol!
Still, 5.7s in the 1/8th is pretty impressive!
No updates? Hows does teh engine run otherwise? Have you done a compression test? I bet you have no actual compression problem. The 350 in my C2 does much the same thing, and at 13: Hg too. The engine actually runs great and the car scoots along just fine but I feel I'm probably leaving 50 horses and a lot of torque at the stable, particularly from a stop. I have a wide ratio gearbox so it's not a dragster anyway. The difference is my needle doesn't float too and yours does a bit That might be carb mixture. I feel two things are going on based on what I have done troubleshooting on my own engine: 1) The cam is installed one tooth retarded, whether or not you did it dot to dot or what. Sometimes cams aren't to spec. You can check the lifters opening with a feeler gauge and a straight edge to see just where they are opening on the 1 and the 6 but your manifold is coming off 2) you have a valve that has an issue, likely the rocker is a bit tight. Not sure if you have an adjustable valve train. I put adjustables in a Buick 462 I built and it's a slight PITA but the thing ran like a dream.
Yes I fount the problem, the carburetor was running very rich at idle. I put a good Holley on it and it got right 15-16” of vaccum and a lot slower moving needle. Something is wrong with that edelbrock carb that was on there.
@@dakotastimeout2827 Great news, glad it was pretty painless, easy swap. You had a big leak in that thing. One of the things I'm doing with mine is getting another Holley for it just like the one I have. I like to have one good carb on the car and another I can rebuild while I don't need yo do it! With luck maybe it will solve my problem too.
Hope to see you at the NNN1
I probably won’t be going but you never can tell
Oops. You measured an exhaust valve and compared it to an intake valve.
No sir
@@dakotastimeout2827 That "T" measuring tool was rattling around an intake port but a very good review of the quality, or lack of quality of these heads. Once cleaned up, they are probably good?
@@deannoun I might of misspoke but I shows the difference of the throats of the intake ports. I think they will be good. I’ll let everyone know once I get them on a running engine.
At 1:24 into the review, is that a crack in the exhaust valve seat?
Back in 1982-84 I had a red 74 Firebird. Wished it was a T/A like yours. Great car!😀
Nice! Absolutely NOTHING wrong with a formula or regular firebird.
I saw that those filters are washable. How do you do that?
Well you could just buy some aluminum heads from Russia. Oh wait nevermind because Russia has never made anything worth buying and is a worthless terrorist country.
👍👍👍
Why do you have a pic of the north korea guy and the japanese flag on a chinese heads video?
I didn’t know there was a difference
Hmm, you usually don't see them open that much in neutral. I'm surprised the car has such good throttle response on the road when the secondaries are set this loose. Usually when they flop open easy like that it causes a bog. That makes me wonder if the secondary vacuum pod on the passenger side is connected and working properly. The secondary air door spring might possibly be set a bit loose too. Sounds good though!
This is a different carburetor than the one I had on there in the last video, this one opens up better. The other one got the were it wasn’t wanting to idle. It’s always been a finicky but this one has been been sitting probably 10 years and i just threw it on there and it works pretty dang good. Got it at a swap meet probably 5 years ago and it had dust and spider webs on it then.
@@dakotastimeout2827 Too bad you don't live in NC, I'm really good with Qjets. I can make em run pretty good. I have one that came stock on my 84 Trans Am with a 1 inch 4 hole phenolic spacer and I've had it apart a few times and its tuned pretty good now. I have one on my 71 Cadillac too and it is set up really nice. I spent a lot of time tuning the secondaries to come in as soon as possible and moved the accelerator pump shot arm to the hole that squirts more. I also set the kickdown switch to come on a bit earlier than WOT and the heavy old car feels very responsive.
@@Impactjunky wow man that sounds awesome!!!
So have you ran this manifold yet ?
I have not, but I’m sure I run into a good engine to use it for.
@@dakotastimeout2827 cool, I have a 82 Z28 with a crossfire on it thinking of doing the same thing . Just not sure if it will fit under the hood. Keep us posted .
I need to find myself a good place to purchase an old manifold I can start chipping away at. I would prefer to not convert my Crossfire over to an EFI carburator replacement but those do seem to be the most effective way to open the airflow
Convert it to a truck tbi. All the wiring and connectors are the same. The stock crossfire computer will run it just fine. Use an 87-89 350 tbi unit from a truck.
@@mcqueenfanman I'm going to look into this, thanks for the idea
@@williamforbes6919 I ended up using Holley's tbi intake, it barely fits under the hood of my 84 vette. #300-49. You can run any intake you want as you can get a tbi to carb adapter plate.
Uhhhh never mind...

Lol full rehab
I guess that the suspension is of no concern? You may have lost a tie rod somewhere. Open carb? 🤦🏻♂️
Absolutely 0 concern this is a solid USA engineered car built by real American Patriots!!!
@dakotastimeout2827 Not the same road engineers that neglect those ruts and pot holes, I bet.😆
@@MrJohnnyDistortion most of that noise was tools in my car hiring each other
@dakotastimeout2827 Dang! Sounded like broken sway bar links and blown out control arm bushing about to hatch like an egg.
Valve stem got boogered up? Flywheel might have spider cracks from worn thrust bearings causing the crankshaft to walk back and forth.
Most of those mid-late 70s smog era V8s were under rated from the factory to make them look more efficient on paper during the gas crisis era. My 73 Mustang 302 and my 84 Trans Am 305 both supposedly make 140 HP but there is no way in hell that could be accurate with they both kill tires.
Ya I agree, I like those 71-73 mustangs! But this engine has to make more than 200hp, thanks for watching.
@@dakotastimeout2827 Do you know what RPM you are running it to? That would help you get a rough ballpark idea. Especially with the help of the Bowling rough horsepower calculator.
@@Impactjunky i think it quits pulling at about 4500 rpms
Plus which, this later 400 was probably net-horsepower-rated with a monolith catalytic converter and single exhaust, so the straight duals in the TA probably add 25 horses or possibly even more. I'm guessing that the Super Duty 455 was rated at, or closer to, its actual output.
@@DanEBoyd ya that’s with the power steering pulley and AC and all that we don’t commonly dyno engine with today becuase we want to brag about the big peak numbers lol! This engine might make 250-270hp it honestly runs a lot harder than I thought it would. Like you said de-smogging it probably helped a lot.
Alabama roads look like Michigan roads ffs!
Hey man, you have awesome videos I like your stuff 👍 I got a 78 T/A and I was lucky when I bought it, it had a 455 put in it. I'm debating whether I want to mess with it and do like what Jim Hand done in his book, I'd pretty much copy his set up 😅. I'd either do that or just keep it like it is and 4 speed swap it, I'm gonna 4 speed swap it regardless I'm tired of the automatic lol.
Thanks so much man! I’m having a hard time keeping one going so I’d just be tickled right now to have a reliable vehicle lol. I love Jim Hands Book.
That’s a killer TA MAN! You should think about doing videos.
@@dakotastimeout2827 I am thinking about it, stay tuned 🤷♂️
@@dakotastimeout2827 I heard in one of your videos you went to Pontiacs in Pigeon Forge, maybe I'll see you up there this year.
@@Hossbossusa yes I’ve went a couple of times but never brung any cars with me, I think they’d laugh at my car lol!
Goddang son! That road! You didn't tell me you was coming to Ohio! Late 400 needs all the gear you can give it. Sounds good and looks like it goes good enough - probably still better than in '74. If you put a 0º straight-up timing set in it when you do the water pump, that'll probably gain you some power too! My Fox clunks like that from the exhaust, and my Corolla does it from its wore-out swaybar links.
Thanks for watching Dan! I already changed the water pump... I’d love more performance from the cam but I’m afraid to mess with a good running engine. I’ve got just a touch hotter camshaft and lifters and even a double roller timing chain, I’m kinda afraid I’ll screw it up.
@@dakotastimeout2827 If it does have a cam, then it probably does have a straight-up timing set.
@@DanEBoyd oh no I think it’s stock timing chain and cam, but I’ve got a 204/214 cam and a double roller timing chain that I might upgrade too.
Ohio? Sheeet! Take a trip to Michigan, son! I moved out of Michigan 20 years ago, because the goddamned roads were so bad, went back for some visiting about 3 years ago, holy Christ, they are 5 x worse now than they were 20 years ago!! I live in Ohio, these roads are a dream compared to Michigan roads!!
