How did the Lombards become the Kings of Italy?
Переглядів 903Рік тому
There are two things that you should be aware of whilst watching the video. 1) I kept it very short and left out many important details about the Lombard's journey and 2) much of the story is strongly influenced by the "historia langobadorum" which was written by a medieval historian who lived in the Lombard kingdom, which certainly makes for an interesting story, but also for many made up elem...

Yo guys, here another ranking video which I hope you ll enjoy ... Btw. most numbers giving in this video refer to George Medelski's work "World Cities". All numbers are only qualified estimations and heavily debated, especially Bianjing could have been estimated higher (with somer experts making estimations close to a million inhabitants, but fors consistencies sake, I stuck with Medelski's est...

Hopefully, I was able to answer this question somewhat satisfactory! This video took waay too long to make dude... The last ones were much quicker, because I only told straight up facts, in this one I had to analyse information more, and think about whats important to include and whats not. The editing took long aswell, I am not sure how well it turned out since its very fast paced but I hope i...

How Emperor Augustus really looked like
why do we all forget that we Franks still exist
They were Dutch people Thats why its called the Netherlands They came from the lowlands.....
wszelkie ludy czarnowłose zwane teutonami to przybłedy ktore wpiły sie w kariny zamiszkała z jednej strony przez Galów a zdrugiej pzamieszkałach przez słowia stad ich jezyki tak sie porózniły
They were europeans. This should be an incentive for more european integration into a single confederation.
Hell nah
When looking at history from the Rhineland, then the Franks were definitely their historic ancestors. But looking at it from the perspective of North or East Germany, they were very much not.
Take north-east actual France, west-Germany, Netherlands and Belgium, then you got the Franks Kingdom.
All of this just to tell me charle was dutch? Gekoloniseerd!

let's stop the midwitery, they were a germanic tribe, end of story. then they evolved into the french we know today with time, their culture merging with the natives gallo roman
Except they didn’t, maybe you should pay attention to the midwitery and learn something
Neat channel. Nice username.
Franks were Franks. They were a Germanic tribe, but they were different from other Germanic tribes who the Franks also did battle with. When I took French history, in French, the Franks are part of the mix that created modern French people. Celts, Latins, Franks, all mixed together to create the modern French.
The franks where also dutch We dutchies are direct descended from the franks so is our language
@@Teringluier4546 True, Franks and North Sea Germanic people like the Saxons.
In short, they are the OG white people
Wrong Dutch Is not german Its a separate germanic language
@@Teringluier4546 I get what the guy above says though. There was no Dutch or German in Charlemagne's time.
He was French by dynasty, German by birth, Frankish by family, and Germanic by genetics. But I guess it depends on how far you want to go back. The interesting thing is that the Franks (in the Frankish Table of Nations) come from Francus, from Hessitio, from Alanus. The Alans were an ancient Iranic nomadic people part of the Sarmatians that spoke a form of Scythian. So was he French, Frank, German, Hessian, Alan, Scythian, or Indo-European? Well, just pick your preferred time frame and call him that. 🤣
They were very obviously German. It just doesn't fit into the narrative of the french and anglosphere.
Except they weren’t actually German because the “German” identity didn’t exist yet. They were Franks, nothing more and nothing less. Their modern continuations are mainly the Dutch, some West Germans and some small parts of Northern France (ethnically only as their culture was eroded)
People sleep on Hungary. They fought the HRE and won half of the time

Well yes, of course. 🤣🤣🤣
Ok it will be simple charles martel was french or geman ? chamelagne is his grandson and martel was more considered as french than german he even ruled in France (neustrie) wich is the north of france now . So the franks are a germanic tribe but charlemagne legacy's come from france , and franks consider charlemagne as their natural leader so franks natural leader legacy was french . so sorry to tell you that germans but Franks are clearly more close to the french that to the german , its why france has the name of their legacy and germany not .
@@memetv8428 why you gotta make em Germans cry 😫
The franks were germanic foreigners that assimilated into « french » culture… as such they were lot more « german » than french before they assimilated, and lot more « french » than german after they assimilated into latin culture and converted to catholicism.
@@fablb9006 thats a great way of putting it Sir :)
I am from Bitche, Moselle or Bitsch,Mosel. And I present my familly as ethnic germans.
All the germanic tribes lived in West france north of the somme river. And north of the schelde=rhenus river in roman times. The merovingiers come from tournai were the grave of chilperic was found. Charlemagne was born in querzy france. Crowned in noyon were his palace was. His brother was crowned in soissons. Charlemagne was fighting the saxons for 30 years. Who lived on the northwest coast of france. By frethun on the coast he murdered 4.500 prisoners of war. And deported every year saxons to new dry land in what is now north germany. Germany has geven this name in 1872. The real germany was france flanders. There was the old language border with german and the gallic roman language. There never was a folkwandering. The original german people lived there for a verry lang time. The belgae lived north of the seine river. Till the somme river. From there the germans lived the whole of belgium and Luxemburg. The Frankische karel martel came from north belgium. He was the grandfather of charlemagne. This all has nothing to do with germany. North of the belgae
This whole question is based on English discrediting of the French. ''French'' and ''Français'' literally mean ''Frank'', but in 21st century English and French. After king Clovis 1 conquered the Gauls, he made everyone in his territory ''Franks''. By the time of Charlemagne and up until now the people of France all were ''Franks'' and were called as such by all the surrounding peoples and even those further into Arabic lands.
Except they weren’t Franks, they were being ruled by Franks
@@sebe2255 They were Franks by then. "Frank" isn't a race.
It was a sort of “race.” It was a tribal/ethnic group. And just getting conquered by the Franks didn’t make the Southern Gaulic fisherman “Frankish.” It isn’t like you coupd get Frankish citizenship in the 5th century if you weren’t one Franks were definitely a distinct ethnic group and their modern continuation is in the Low Countries and lower Rhine in Germany. The French state is Frankish in origin that they “founded” it (among many other political entities) but the French people definitely aren’t
@@sebe2255 It wasn't a race, but a human group under a name. There was no genetic difference between the Allemani and the Salien Franks. You can be as obstinated as you want, it is the kings of the Franks that decided the Gauls were Frankish, go complain to Clovis the First and Charlemagne. The Franks were heavily Romanized, Clovis himself knew Latin and had a cavalry like the Romans. The Franks were basically the heirs of the Western Roman Empire and became one with the Gauls. Even to this day the French are called "Franks" by the Germans themselves.
Give me their decree that stated that everyone under their rule was a Frank. And while the genetic difference between Gauls and Allemanic people would be negligible they would still be a distinct cultural/ethnic group. Germans and Dutch people are genetically similar but both are still distinct ethnic groups. The same went for Franks. And no, French peasants weren’t included lmao Again find me the decree
Is the Franconian dialect Hoch Deutsch, was involved with the consonant shift ? I would think so, as they don't speak plat deutsch like the Northerners. So, did they migrate to central South Germany before the consonant shift? In other words, are the Franconians of today, around Nuremberg, migrant Franks? Sounds bizarre to me.
They most likely aren’t Franks and just got the name the same way France did, as a legacy of them being conquered by the Franks
Conclusion: he was Dutch
The Franks were Germanic tribes and spoke a Germanic language. The ethnic Luxembourgers are descendants of the Franks.
Excuse me? The Franks were a Germaic tribe, therefore ancestors of the Germans at source, and partially of the French (were the name also comes from - "Frankreich", meaning "das Reich der Franken" or in English "empire of the Franks"). To be frank;-)
Your inability to see the continuity of these peoples and their culture, despite all the changes they have gone through, is nothing to be proud of. That doesn't mean today's French and Germans are the same as Charlemagne, but to see how the foundations that were laid back then, still influence us today. Like for example Roman Law.
@@Corvin2696 well, first of all I am not proud of anything. Secondly, we have continuations from the first humans onward, to answer the question asked in the beginning I tried to find specific cultural elements if the franks had closer similarities with german or french developement. One thing to remember: If you look back at history, you have to put off (as good as you can) the lens of today and look for what it was in their specific time and not what is has become.
@@p0mp3y73 As I already said, I agree with you on things changing over time. But actions have consequences, maybe even for millions of people. If we make unwise decisions today, it may influence humanity for generations.
@@Corvin2696 true true ... But how would you have attempted to answer the question?
@@p0mp3y73 The same as you, that wasn't the point (also sorry if my post came off harsher than I intended). But my emphasis in the final words would have been that you maybe can't attribute Charles to any side, but a lot of the structures he implemented are having an effect to this day. Your focus is more on everything was diverse and random and stuff just happened (At least it came off this way). Btw this is just food for thought. My english is not as good so my formulations are sometimes clunky.
@@Corvin2696 don't worry I was just curious ^^ I def think you are raising some good points I've been neglecting :)

There is a link between modern and ancient germans. And I mean by this the real germans and not the newcomers. Same as there is a link between Myceneans and Greek or Italics and todays Italians.
They were German, Germanic the change did not take place until post the sons of Charlemagne.
