So this is the game Throfinn suggested King Canute and Ketil to play instead of fighting...lol
Hehe, really!?
Question: Let’s say I have a set of 3 red on my plate, after rolling my neighbor takes the trade bun die. Then after small and medium dice resolve my neighbor then trades me their red bun for my blue bun. I then have 4 red buns on my plate. Do I put them all back? Or is the red bun I received from my neighbor a separate set of red?
Heya! Dice on your plate can’t be stolen or traded, they’re ‘safe’ so to speak. If you had 3 red on your plate and were traded another one, it could only be traded with a bun that’s not on your plate. So the red bun they trade you would form a separate set of red below your plate. If you were to collect another 3 or more red buns below your plate, they’d go back in the bag, but the 3 red ones on the plate stay where they are.
@@boardgaimz no wonder our game took so long last night we were sabotaging each others sets! Haha thank you for clearing it up!
@@nickbotello4961😂 that probably threw a bit of a spanner in the works!
Really well explain thanks for making
Thanks so much, no problem! Hope you have fun!
Thank you so much we couldt find any manual so this really helped us🙏
No problem, glad it helped and hope you have fun!
So is this a one-time thing?
You can play it as much as you like! You never know what cards you’ll get or the order :)
@@boardgaimz but it looks boring after the first few games, especially since all cards are used.
In the case of Hive Carbon and Hive Pocket, the ladybug and mosquito are included already. You have to order the pillbug separately for these sets. In the original Hive set, you have to buy the ladybug, mosquito, and pillbug separately. Fortunately, the expansion pieces can fit in the portable container.
@@michaelmacaraig2841 Ah we didn’t know Hive pocket had extras, lucky us! We’ll have to try find the pill bug to add in at some point too :)
Woohoo!!
I’m glad y’all are some of the first people to actually show the cards 😀
Oh really!? Hope it helped! :) We've had a few plays and it definitely makes the game more interesting!
Note that while a lot of modern rules, including those used for tournaments and such use them, the "king most be surrounded on four sides to be killed" and "king must reach a corner to escape" rules are not historically "correct". The four-sides rule is bases on a very severe mistranslation. What the actual rules said was that he could be killed from two sides, just like any other piece, except when on the center square (in which case he needed to be surrounded on four sides). Also if he is next to the center square he must be surroundes on three sides (the fouth side being the center square itself). The "king must escape on a corner square" rule is a modern invention to try to fix the imbalance created by this mistranslation, based only on the fact that the corners were sometimes decorated on a few historical boards. In the original rules he only had to reach any square at the edge of the board (effectivly "running off the board", escaping the attack). Historical side note: in some Old Norse sources the non-king pieces are specified to be shield-maidens (either all of them or spesifically the defender's ones, the wording is a bit ambigious). The bearded designs used in this style of set is actually based on the style of Norse chess pieces. Historical hnefatafl pieces tended to be pretty abstract ball or "onion" shapes (except for the king usually being more elaborate).
Interesting stuff!
Hello. Can i play it with only 2 players or its unplayable?
I’ve noticed you haven’t made a tutorial on ito yet. Maybe you could try that?
@@alixx_legenddark_xx2819 Maybe! Have some more lined up soon, but a couple more previews we’ve been sent to show off first :)
@@boardgaimz ok
The last challenger starts the next turn regardless if they win or lose the challenge?
Yep that's correct! Whoever made the challenge starts the next round, regardless of whether they were correct, or revealed a skull :)
High quality video! Thanks guys
@@bobojo6447 Thank you for the kind comment!
Very good videos. I'm surprised the algorithm has only awarded you with more views in a few of them. Good work!
Thanks! We’re still improving / testing things out, but hopefully the algorithm will be kind one day :)
Hi! Can you make a tutorial on Air, Land and Sea now? I’ve tried looking for some, but they’re not great.
Ah, shame! That’s not a game we own or have played at the moment we’re afraid! Maybe one day though!
Okay, that’s fine. Are there any games you have but didn’t make a tutorial on yet?
Loads of games! We only manage to make one a week in between work at the moment, so there’s always more left to do hehe! As we’re short on time we tend to stick to the simpler ones, as the videos take a while to make/edit.
@@boardgaimz Can’t wait
Great job explaining the rules so quickly. I do wish that the Pillbug was also part of Pocket Hive.
Thanks! Same here, we’d love to add it to the collection!
Could you play the game with only 28 balls, rather than the normal 30
Did you lose some? We haven’t tried, but with only 28 it wouldn’t make the pyramid, so you couldn’t put the last one on top. You could still do the winner is whoever places the last ball though, not sure how much it would affect things!
great video!
Thanks, glad you think so!
I count 617 thumbs ups
You win!…. Another thumbs up! 👍
It saddens me that this channel is a very small one. Why don’t I help you? Edit: here’s a suggestion: why don’t you make a top ten best abstract games, or board game, or card games or anything rlly? If you did that, can you link it to me?
Aww thanks! We're surprised anyone watches these videos, so don't be sad! We'll have to do some more videos like that at some point when we get time!
Use google translate app camera to translate the manuals!
Good idea! It came in super handy when we were there!
This is an fantastic outline of the game, I am going to print QR codes linking to this video to give to people I show the game
Glad you think so and thanks you! We’re always a bit critical of the quality of our older vids, so glad you still found it useful!
I thought there was supposed to be two face up discard piles too?
You can do if you like! You won’t be going through them after discarding, so where you discard cards you’ve swapped or contraband you’ve not snuck through is up to you. Often we just put them in the box to save space and in the rare event we need to make a new draw pile, shuffle them back together after :)
@@boardgaimz what do you mean you don’t go tnrough them? The rulebook talks about having the two face up discard piles because when you draw cards you have the option of taking from either face up discard pile as you choose. And the cards you discard can go in either pile. This allows people to see what you are taking sometimes to have a better gauge if you may be lying or not. Instead of just randomness from the deck unless you choose that.
@@KMReviews Ah, are you reading the rules from the first edition game? In the second edition that bit is omitted - in the version we have at least !
@@boardgaimz the second edition. It’s on the setting up the game portion on the third page. They even have a picture. It specifically says to draw five cards into both piles and that both face up piles can be looked through by anyone at any time. Then on the next page when it talks about the market phase, it talks about after you choose your cards to discard, you seem aside and draw back up from either face up discard pile or the facedown deck in any order you choose, etc etc. there’s also a picture with an example on that page too
@@KMReviews The UK edition with the new artwork (the one that includes the expansion)? We've just gone and checked ours and there's nothing of the sort, how strange! It does have a diagram and an image in the first edition one however. Have checked around online too and it does seem to state this is a change in the second edition.
Thanks guys! :)
No problem! 😊
This was actually much better than the highest viewed explanations of fox in the forest. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful :)
100% agree!! I was going to leave a comment similar to this after finishing the video. I have ADHD and the way they got straight into it and explained things was perfect!
@@MonkeyBrainMcGee thanks so much, glad it was helpful!
Great explanation
Thanks!
great explanation but ranking a warthog that high on the sexy scale is inexcusable
Haha, thanks! Warthogs have rizz 😂
Best explanation video ever. Even more clearer than the actual game itself. I needed a guide cause I couldn't understand it from the rules guide...bad translation maybe? Thanks for the video ❤
Awww thanks, glad it helped! We find rules in lots of games are often a little ambiguous. It’s definitely a skill rule writing. We always look at our older videos and think ‘what about this scenario we didn’t cover’ etc.
@@boardgaimz good job really. Keep it up! <3
So the colours of the cards have no purpose in this game?
Nope! The colours are just to differentiate the numbers / highlight the two halves of each card a bit more.
My version of the game have 1 special card that i cannot find anywhere what that card does, it's a spiral arrow (arrows forming a circle) much like the recycle logo, any ideas?
Heya, is that not the inwards arrows card? Or is it another different one? D
Hello! Different one i believe, my cards have the inwards one also, it couldn't be that
@@uglyduckk5632 hmmm not sure! Do you have a picture or link to a similar one? What edition is it?
Update: i think i found what it does! Never thought of looking through the wikipedia page, but that is the ONLY place that have this information. Pass it Forward: Blue arrows circulating. Players now match using the cards played by the player on their left.
@@uglyduckk5632awesome, mystery solved - interesting!
Great concise teach video! Makes it easy to start learning and just looking up specifics in the rule book.
Thanks, glad you think so! This is one we definitely feel we could film better now we’ve had more practise, but glad it’s helpful still!
It seems complicated
Heya! It's pretty simple really - turn over a card, vote for a player you think matches whatever it says on the card the most, with the aim of voting the same as whoever is the dictator that turn :)
Loved the hand gestures and how no time was wasted showing things
Thanks, glad you thought so! Have been trying to tone them down a tad from when we first started so they’re not too fast, but still succinct :)
👍
👍 👍 👍 👍
@@boardgaimz 😄
About the way to win with "the winning hand", if I understood correctly, it would require to play a big enough hand, so the other players cannot scout it and beat it until it's your turn again. Basically if you are able to scout your own card, you win? What about the scenario where the player prior to you scouts the last card? Thank you for the video!
Heya, no problem! So the way to win is to have the most points. The ‘winning hand’ as you refer to is a round end condition. A round ends if EITHER one player runs out of cards, or ALL other players (apart from the one who laid the set on the table) could not, or did not play against a players set on the table and only scouted from it. If you are the player that laid down that hand, when it comes to scoring the round, you don’t deduct points for how many cards you have left in your hand. Everyone else does. You play as many rounds as there are players. Whoever has the most points at the end of them all wins. So for example: If you laid down a hand and everyone scouts from it up until it’s your turn again, the round ends, scoring for the round begins and you don’t lose any points for the cards left in your hand. If, for example, you’re playing with 5 players and you lay down a 2 card set, then the 2 players after you scout both the cards in your set so that there’s nothing left on the table, the next player can lay down whatever they like as there’s nothing to scout from or beat. Hope that makes sense?
This is the best, most succinct HTP Skull video I have watched. Thanks!
Thanks, it means a lot! The perfectionist in us is still resisting the urge to remake some of our older videos though hehe!
Just saw the video. I don't see how this game is so popular. Glad I did not pick it up during PAX.
For us it fits the niche of quick and easy game to take the pub or play with someone not wanting something too complex. It’s another trick taking game (a crowded genre), with another little twist. Wouldn’t say it blew us out the water either, but it’s a solid little game that’s easy for non gamers to pick up too. There’s a few things to consider if you want to (which way up to have your hand, where to put scouted cards, when to use your scout and show tokens, which adjacent cards to use and when) or you can just play without thinking too deep either. For a small box and some cards, it does a fair bit we guess, just depends if this type of game is up your street .
It is fun and easy to play , the strategy (although not very high) is there, the battle is mostly between you and yourself. Furthermore it can be appreciated both by experienced players and non gamers alike and it is a very compact and portable game that can be played anywhere. It may be not in your alley, however give it a try before dismissing it completely.
Just one question because it is not clear for me in the rules and you didn’t show it as well. If somebody plays 4 5 6, can I beat it with 7 8 9?
Yep, if the type of set and number of cards are the same, the set with the lowest value card in it loses. So the 7,8,9 wins as the 4,5,6 has the lowest value card in it (the 4).
@@boardgaimz thanks a lot! So also 789 beats 678, right?
@@TheQrank No problem! It sure does as 6, 7, 8 has the lowest value (6) :)

And thank you for watching!

These are awesome! I've heard great things about Wonder Bowling and Crash Octopus. Adding Viking Seesaw and that Love Letter edition to my list! So fun!!
Thanks! Viking See-saw is a great simple little filler game, the pieces are so cute!
You didn't talk about how cards are actually played, for example can i play a 2 value card next to another 2 value card? Or does my next placement always have to be higher than one I've already placed?
Hi Mark! You can place your cards however you like, so long as they are orthogonally adjacent to each other, that's the only rule ;) However if you want to maximise scoring, you'll want to try and make it so every card contributes to a path. To make a path, each card in it must be greater than the one before, but they don't have to be consecutive numbers. The path has to start and end in the same tree species. You could play a 2 next to a 2, but it's less likely to help your score.
@@boardgaimz Thanks!
@@marktaylor4962 No problem, have fun!
