Verlon Thompson performs Mexico’s Daughter
Holed up in Costilla NM. Put me in the mood for this song.
Mexico's Daughter
(Verlon Thompson/Frank Serio)
Saturday night was just getting started
Out beneath the Cantina lights
Mexico's Daughter wore Mexican silver
And jangled her way into Mexico's night
With mission bells ringing and sweet angels singing
She was born out beneath Sonora's full moon
And the sounds and the colors of Old Mexico
Found their way on the wind up into her room
She moved with a grace and a reckless abandon
She wore scarlet roses tied in her hair
The stars hung down just a little bit lower
To watch as she moved in the cool midnight air
Saturday night was just getting started
Out beneath the Cantina lights
Mexico's Daughter wore Mexican silver
And jangled her way into Mexico's night
She shared a drink with a dark desperado
And the sweetness of the whiskey loosened the night
She was laughing and spinning around on her heels
With a Devil may care look in her eyes
He pulled her close out on the veranda
They kissed and he held her young body so tight
But a rifle was aimed at the dark desperado
As Mexico's Daughter stepped into it's sights
The trigger was touched
The hammer was falling
The barrel was smoking
The bullet took flight
Red blood and dust mixed with roses and silver
And Mexico's Daughter was lost to the night
Saturday night was just getting started
Out beneath the Cantina lights
Mexico's Daughter wore Mexican silver
And jangled her way into Mexico's night

Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson recorded this song as a duet on Buffett's License To Chill album. Boats To Build (Verlon Thompson/Guy Clark) Well it's time for a change I'm tired of the same ol' same Same old words, same old rhymes Same old tricks and the same old lines Days, precious days They roll in and out like waves I've got boards to bend and planks to nail I've got charts to make and seas...

In remembrance of Guy Clark. Sideman's Dream (Verlon Thompson) We were young and looking like outlaws Waiting for a train to take us up to Oregon A two week run of old saloons and dance halls Every show we played was better than the last one We held your songs up to the light And my harmonies got tight You were playing strong and clean We were a musical machine It was the perfect sideman's drea...

Wow! Just, Wow! I've seen you play at the Suwannee over the last few decades. Every time your music has touched my heart, but last week was so magical! Not only did you sing my twin baby boys to sleep a few times, but my 20 year son discovered you on his own and feels the magic too. Thanks Verlon❤
Glad you called your Mama, Verlon. The story you tell about this song during a live show is my favorite of them all. God bless.
