    Just did this today with my boys. Lovely spot. Next time, we'll bring water-resistant footwear. Those exposed roots formed pools and there was lots of mud. No regrets through. - Great trip report, BTW. Thank you! (hand prayer thingy)

    Just did this trip! would not recommend going in late July. Mosquitos were very bad at every point, even at the highest points. The sun was hot with all the exposure and sadly it was very smokey due to Falls Fire approaching the area. Would recommend doing this trail, looking forward to trying this trail in the later season. Its very hard (lots of climbing) but good fun.

    A quiet, lovely walk! It's nice that there is a bench or two along the way to sit and enjoy the peace. I would hope that part of the "restoration" of this former logging site includes the reintroduction of native trees to provide habitat diversity for birds and animals that formerly inhabited this area.

    Very nice to discover this trail guide series. In the first 2/3 - 3/4 of this one, however, the color is very pale and washed out and you don't get to see the beautiful greenery until the very end.

    Thanks, this is an interesting and informative series!. However, there were no close shots of Little Strawberry Lake and one cannot tell how far the campsites are from the lake???

    • @PacificNorthwestTrailGuide
      @PacificNorthwestTrailGuide 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, I see what you mean, sorry about that! It actually varies a little bit. The first group of campsites shown are set back more from the lake, probably 2 or 3 hundred feet. Then after you cross the little creek flowing out from the lake, those few sites after that are closer, more like 100 feet back from the lake, you can see the lake from the campsites over the buses there, i just didn't catch it well in the video. Also, the one site I show at the end is kind of a secluded one that is on a little hill farther from the lake.

    Just a few years ago, there used to be an upper viewing deck and a hidden user trail to the bottom. The deck was removed after a fatality and the user trail has been usurped into the new trail to the base of the falls that you followed. I remember gripping that rock wall all the way down the slick mud back when it was only a user trail. People had sketchy ropes secured to lower yourself by but I never touched them. Glad to see there's a safer way now. Thanks for the vid.

    I can remember when hiking at Cape Horn was a few pull offs on the side of the highway and a steep cobweb of trails that ended up right at the cliff face. I used to sit there and say hi to nearby turkey vultures and distant lightning. The waterfall felt great in July.

      From the parking lot there is a lot you can access with a decent stroller. You will not be able to take the path that goes behind the waterfall. It is too steep, uneven, and at times too narrow for a stroller. You would be afforded a decent view from the top though.

    You did this in July 2023. In August 2023, I led a group of volunteers with Trailkeepers of Oregon and cut most of the logs off this trail, except very near Serene Lake. We camped at Middle Rock Lake, which has more room for campers than the lower one. We cleared out that spur trail as well. We did not attempt to drive 4610-240. Instead we parked at the Shellrock trailhead, near Hideaway lake, and hiked in. In 2024, we hope to get someone to drive supplies in to Frazier Turnaround, so we can log out the trail to Shining Lake. We also want to do an overnight log out trip camping at Cache Meadow and log out the Grouse Point trail to Serene Lake. I will be happy to answer any questions about our plans for next summer.

      @PacificNorthwestTrailGuide 6 місяців тому

      Wow, thanks for sharing that info Mark, it's really cool to hear from someone that takes care of this trail. I guess if I had visited a month later, I would have found middle rock lake thanks to your crew! Myself and others that see this I'm sure appreciate having a little insight into what might be happening this year too, so thanks again.

      I encourage anyone with overnight backpacking experience, and loves this area, to look at the calendar page for Trailkeepers of Oregon this summer. ( OK, look at it all the time... ) The exact dates for these trail parties will depend on snow conditions. It would also be nice to get someone with a high clearance vehicle to truck in the gallons of mosquito repellent needed if we go in July :) I will provide head nets. Seriously though, about half of our crew did not have crosscut saw experience, but we have trained, certified people to supervise. Logout work is a great combination of physical and technical - lots of fun.
