And we thought our measly little muscle cars were something. What a thrill it must have been to boot around in one of these machines.

From the engineering side I certainly understand that there was little that could be done in terms of assisting the pilots reduce the very long list of things they needed to remember, and no doubt a lot of training could make much of this second nature. But I have to wonder in combat how well one could do, notably after a very long flight and possibly with a bullet or two in you. Hats off to anyone out there who actually flew these!

One other thing... The fine folks at Pratt & Whitney produced a number of excellent radials, of which the 1340 ci Wasp was designated by the ASME as an “Historic Engineering Landmark.” Their engines were so reliable, experienced pilots would say, “When the going gets rough, place your trust in God and Pratt & Whitney.” However, Pratt metaphorically hit a grand slam when they created the 18-cylinder Double Wasp, arguably the finest radial aero engine ever made. A senior mechanical engineer I worked with in the late 1960s had flown P47s over Europe and had nothing but praise for the Jug and especially for that noisy monster to which the propeller was bolted. He was one of many airmen whose planes took enemy fire to the engine and despite losing some cylinders in the process, the engine kept running and brought him back to base.

Just think about the fact that these engines were conceived and built well before any computers were available to carry out all the design calculations or help illustrate the assemblies and subassemblies that made up the engine. It all got done by engineers and draftsmen using slide rules, big sheets of vellum, India ink-and a lot of brain power!

What an awesome airplane. I guess all pilots think they could be fighter pilots. I feel like I could take off and land that plane provided I had time to review the info thoroughly on the operations. Oh and provided I had a good long runway!

WHAT A PITY...the average young British man or woman probably know little about Mitchell.....I dated a young Philippina of 35 and she did NOT KNOW WHO GENERAL Douglass MacArthur was.

This aint far from reality. In the UK pilots went sraight from the T6 into the Spitfire...huge difference, lost a lot of guys thru accident.

Well, my grandfather could... and did. But the question you should be asking, is who would win against each other in a dogfight 2 out of 3, me or my grandfather? The answer is not as clear cut as you might think.... he flew 171 missions in the Pacific and I've seen him shoot a flying wasp out of the air across the room with a can of raid from the hip... but... I'm the world's best aerobatic dance pilot.
