Upper Fox-Wolf Demonstration Farm Network
United States
Приєднався 28 кві 2020
We're a network of farmers testing and demonstrating the best conservation practices to reduce phosphorus, nitrates, and sediment entering the Great Lakes basin. We are based in Northeastern Wisconsin, covering the Upper Fox and Wolf River Basins. We work in Waupaca, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Outagamie, Portage, Shawano, and Winnebago counties.
We create videos related to soil health practices farmers in our area are trying, plus events from the Upper Fox-Wolf Demonstration Farm Network.

Late Season Interseeding
Переглядів 432 роки тому
Late season interseeding offers another window to establish cover crops. Seeding in late summer to early fall seeding gives the cover many weeks to grow. Having these well-established cover crops before harvest allows you to trade one living root (of your main crop) for the other living root (that of your cover). By doing this, you have continuous living roots which hold nutrients and soil in p...

Testing Wyoming Winter Peas and Balansa Clover as an Overwintering Cover Crop

“I'm trying to grow my own nitrogen,” says Dan Boerst, about the combination of blansa clover and winter peas he’s using for cover crops. Based on some trials by Rick Clark, Dan is trying out the dual crop, and unique planting times here in Northeastern Wisconsin. Dan says, “there was a lot of controversy on [when to] plant these Wyoming winter peas. Some people told me to plant 'em early. And ...
Testing 2 Ways to Plant Green
Переглядів 382 роки тому
Demonstration farmer, Rick Gehrke tested planting soybeans green in two different ways; planting then roller crimping, and roller crimping then planting. Planting, then roller crimping is ideal because it reduces the risk of having planter issues (like hairpinning) from the vegetation mat. However, you may consider roller crimping the cover crops, then planting if you plan on running the crimpe...
Planting Green then Roller Crimping
Переглядів 2952 роки тому
Our demo farmer, Dan Boerst, planted green into standing rye, then rolled the rye to terminate it. Using a roller crimper flattens the cover crop and crimps their stems, stopping their growth. The terminated crop remains on the ground until it naturally breaks down, providing continuous soil cover. Keeping the soil covered helps reduce erosion, regulate soil temperatures and moisture, provides ...

My son rented a small field to make into a orchard grass hay field. It had previously been in corn for many years. We planted in the fall , the next spring there was clover that came up really thick and tall. So our first cutting was a lot of clover and some OG. After some investigation, found out the previous farmer had planted balancia clover that didn’t come up. It was odd it took over a year to germinate.
Hi Dan, Great to hear about your experiment! Would love to know if you used FIXatioN Balansa or another variety? Rick has been using FIXatioN Balansa and Survivor Peas. Both FIXatioN and Survivor have been bred for cold tolerance. Balansa doesn't show much above ground growth until mid Spring when the soil temps warm. Then it goes crazy.
Will there be a follow up interview with him, to see how his experiments turn out?
