Um, just use a strap? If you are a woman with bosoms it will not stay in place as you suggest. And holding it too close to your body deadens the sound of the instrument. Yes, hand positions are important, as you say. But it’s easier to keep hand positions loose with a strap.
Yes use a strap but not everyone has one. And yes wahine have more to deal with in the chest but growing up I’ve seen amazing wahine hold their ukulele exactly the way I teach. Back in the day straps weren’t used for ukulele. It wasn’t the norm… But if u have a strap? Perfect 👍🏼
Just found your channel, wow great stuff, got my ukulele from a charity shop keen to learn. Will be learning from you from now on sensei lol . Nod UK
Ooh can I take your lessons
You definitely can. Patreon.com/jonahdavis
Beautiful!!
Thank you so much. This is helping me become proficient in playing. I sing at the hotels in Kona with Pomai Brown and have always been afraid to play. Now you’ve made it easy to practice and I want to practice.
Mahalo! Im so glad you’re enjoying it🙏🏼
I love your teaching style. So many musician players who teach are not as patient and able to break it down. I will definitely stay with your videos. I am a performing musician who just sings but I need to develop and strengthen my ukulele strum style. That up down strum is GENIUS!
I love your nails.and teaching the simple finger style. Thank you
Awesome thanks
Not what I expected or hope for. The melody is buried in and around the chords. Fingerstyle is including enough of both, together, at the proper time, to present a very full song on a single instrument. 10 yin and I’m just starting to work out finger style arrangements on my own. Hoped you would help with that.
Loving your lessons! Bravo
Thank you very much!
Um, this is just a fingerpicking accompaniment….there is no melody involved? Fingerstyle is chord melody - where you play the melody and a chord accompaniment at the same time.?
Thank u for your comment:) but a fingerstyle is a technique or skill you apply to a chord melody… “Fingerstyle ukulele is a style of playing the ukulele that involves picking the strings individually, rather than strumming them” Fingerstyle is simply picking…
@@JonahDavisit’s a bit confusing….different people seem to use different terms to describe things. Thanks anyway
@@eileenlander1380 i know what you’re talking about… I’m sorry about that. Thats why Im doing these videos to help clarify. As a musician and teacher for over 20 years here in Hawai’i I see so much people confused so I hope this helps.
I agree with you. Most people, when they see the phrase “finger style”, they think chord/melody. Fingerpicking is just plain fingerpicking.
Too much talk . Then played something very nice that no beginner can do.
…brilliant…
I really enjoy the way you teach, thanks from australia
Thank you! Aloha from Hawaii
I'm on the opposite of that spectrum. I'm on the "My fingers are way too fat to get that close together" side.
lol that's definitely a tricky one as well.
Thankyou your tattoo and hands are so nice to look at, from australia
Thank you I appreciate that!
Mahalo! That was great!
Glad you enjoyed thank you!
Wow, very nice. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed!
I am just midway through but I am already learning sooooooo much ❤🎉❤🎉❤
Mahalo nui loa, Johah! My Dad played and tried to teach us as kids, but I just didn't like the sound of his Uke so never picked it up. A couple months ago a dear friend let me noodle on her new uke and I loved it. So much so that I bought my own and am learning it now. And by the grace of god, Dad's lessons are coming back. Who knew that was even possible. And thank you very much for the strumming pointers! Every little bit helps!
Great tutorial and very inspiring. Please Please could you do a video on how to do that fast piece you played as it sounded fab!
I’m super interested in the option of the resin nails. It I went to a nail salon, what type of nails should I ask for? Do you have them on your left hand/fretting hand also?
Great, answered a few questions for me, thanks.
I like so much the way you teach
Dang I'd kill to play like you! Wow 👌 👏 😍
Using those stick on acrylic nails is dangerous the glues esthetists use to stick them on have formaldehyde and fungicides and expoxy resins all of which are highly carcinogenic and absorbed into your body.
Like it!!! I want to strum like that but I would have to get a couple resin nails too!
Useful!
Thank you!
Thank you for doing this tutorial. Can you also do a tutorial on how to strum fast? Thank you 😊
Thank you very much! I absolutely can :)
Por favor, me encantaría aprender a tocar (Tems - Me & U) en mi ukelele.☺️🙏🏽🙏🏽
Would this also apply for guitar?
Yes, this is exactly what I teach my guitar students to do as well.
Such a great lesson. I needed that. Thanks. Can you do a video doing that fast strum you did in slow motion?
Thank you! I sure can:)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤aboutley beautiful song 🎵❤ unlce jonah

Detailed demonstration. Thanks. This is a beautiful instrument
Thank you! Much appreciated.
i have a 6-string ukulele and its been with me for about 10 years. i had 2 unison A strings for the longest time. recently, i switched to a low A when i got the strings replaced. i'm finding challenges to play and i highly recommend it.

do you use any grain filler/how many coats of nitro?
🌺Puamana, located in Lahaina Maui, is one of Hawaii’s most famous songs that is sung and danced the world over… Read below for the history of this song and how it came to be. Comment below your favorite Hawaiian song… 😉🤙🏼 The Story of Puamana in Aunty Irmgard’s own words. My father [Charles Farden] had bought a piece of property [situated oceanfront on Front Street in Lahaina], and on the deed appeared the name “Puamana.” Dad, knowing the Hawaiian language well, said, “Well, that is a good name for our place.” He built our home, which was a large six bedroom, two bath home, and he called it “Puamana.” That name was chiseled into the stone wall leading to the house. We moved into Puamana in 1916. I was four years old. One of the things I remember so well is that my father took the nine of us children and gave each of us a sprouting coconut tree. He had some holes dug along the stone wall near the ocean. And he said, “Children, each one of you are to plant your coconut tree, and as that tree grows, so will you grow.” Well, we planted them. Later, there were two more children and the youngest two were taken by mother and dad, each given a sprouting coconut and they were planted. Now the trees are tall, bending toward the ocean, and they are still on the land of Puamana, though the home is no longer there. This home was such a happy one for me. Later, I wrote a song about it, and in it I mention the coconut trees. It was in 1937 that I composed “Puamana.” I was home on a visit (I was teaching on Moloka’i), and suddenly-I was just sitting at the piano playing-and this tune came. I said to my sister Emma [Emma Farden Sharpe, who later became a beloved kumu hula on Maui], “Come, do a few steps of the hula to this song that I am just composing.” She asked, “What song is it?” I said, “It’s going to be for Puamana” with no hesitation, although I didn’t even know that yet-I hadn’t planned it. But it must have been the love for this place that brought this all about. I got the tune, and my sisters gathered ‘round with their instruments-we had the bass, the piano, the ‘ukulele, the guitar. And we started to hum it in harmony. Then Dad came home for lunch. I said (before he even had a chance to eat), “Dad, come sit down and help us with Hawaiian words for this song for Puamana.” As we threw him phrases, he would translate them into Hawaiian. Because we had planted those coconut trees as youngsters and watched them grow over the years, I had to include them in the second verse of the song. Puamana has since become the “family song” for the Fardens, and although Irmgard composed more than 200 songs in her lifetime, it is “Puamana”--telling the story of her beloved childhood home in Lahaina--that is always sung and danced at every family occasion (including her funeral).
great info from true pros! Thank you guys

Thank you 🙏🏼
the goat of ukulele and also my teacher 😌
that’s my teacherrrrrrtr
Awesome bro
I love low action too, dear Jonah. I've been at too high an action with my guitars all my life until recently. Some luthiers have started drilling two-hole/string bridges of that reason, to increase break angle, esp at low action. Please tell me: what action at the nut, say, at 1st fret, do you use and recommend for a typical baritone uke. To explain: I'm after the baritone basics as mine is somewhere around 0.5 mm of space there, which seems mighty much to me. I'm trying to understand this my new instrument better, the lovely uke. So interesting vid I must say, this one of yours, interesting and friendly. All the best from Sweden.
Tell me more about the classes! Thanks. 😀🥳
