how long did take to dig the hole thanks
The best solution for the overflow erosion is to...Dig a trench from the drywell along the line of erosion about 20'. Go down about 8"-14". Start out at the dry well...Go down about 8". Tap into one of the dry well holes ...The trench should have a 1" drop for each 10'. So 20' would be a 2"drop at end of 20'. Use solid weeping lines with punched holes...Wrap trench with non woven drainage fabric...add about 2" gravel. 2" drainage rock ...then lay pipe...put a cap on end of 20 ' section..Add gravel to ground surface...Pull fabric over the top of gravel...Place soil and seed ..The excess water from drywell will now be able to naturally leach into the area surrounding the 20' length...Then in the future you can always extend it..The drywell holds the water...The french drain ( leach lines) distribute the water evenly
What’s with all the ellipses?
As big a yard as they have...A leach system would work out better...Have a solid line running from the house...Then use solid leach line and have a distribution box and french drain leach lines in a gravel base ... Renting a trencher could do that in less than 5 hours...
Great job 👍. Suggestion. Put a screw in side of pop up to hold it onto the inlet pipe ..Also because you have clay. You can rent a post hole auger and drill a deeper hole down the center of the dry well...That will allow water to seep deeper... Usually I will drill a 4' hole in the center of the dug out dry well hole and fill the auger hole with gravel... Your dad is lucky to have you around to help out. Great job 👍
Im facing an install of at least one of these and I'm a bit older than these folks and I'm really not looking forward to all of the digging. However, I am motivated to solve a problem.
Hi, how much water would you say this system is capable of collecting? Could it collect enough to manage a large puddle of water (like 7 foot radius). Thanks
This video has good vibes! No kidding! We did the hike on July 4, 2020. One for the books for sure. Great job!
You have to clean out that drain pipe. It’s full of dirt and shingle granules. Otherwise good job! How are you guys liking the second flo well?
Quick question…what is ideal tape to use on the filter fabric? I thought that some may break down after so many years and thought I might need speed tape lol
We just used duct tape
I've seen where bottom of barrel should be solid, drain holes should only be on sides, and use some kind of weep fabric over top and around outside of barrel,to keep sediment out,I'm using a plastic 55 gallon barrel
I like using PVC so it doesn't clog, also a clean out is always a good idea
Those little wells are a waste of time n labor n money they get overwhelmed to easy on small rains then your left with a mini swamp area we end up switching them to sump pump systems to day light all the time🤦🏽♂️⛈🔬
We stuck 2 of them together it was a massive failure caused a giant sinkhole
did it really im thinking about filling mine back up beacsue im worried about a sink hole problem?
originally watched because i have a similar issue and was contemplating this project but stayed cuz you guys are the cutest. God bless you!
Hi there ... I love your fun teamwork approach. We’re considering this option and just started looking at drywall info/DIY. I hope this doesn’t sound like a ridiculous question: I’m curious to know the reason for not just filling the entire hole with gravel. Is it that it would cost a lot more for gravel than buying the container? I was thinking a smaller hole would suffice too. The huge hole you had to dig was to fit the container. Thanks!
Hello there! I'm not an expert, but I think the benefit of using an open container versus a hole filled with gravel is the container can hold more water. The water can fill the bin and then slowly seep out the small holes and through the gravel and into the soil. Having a hole filled with gravel might work if you don't get too much rain, but I'm not sure! Good luck!
@@rebeccahartnett1980Thanks!
There is no reason at all to fill the hole with gravel. Indeed, you should not do so. Leave it wide open for greater water capacity and inspection. Regarding hole size: The manufacturer's printed installation instructions specify a 48" diameter hole. This size results in greater capacity and far greater absorption area. (Sidebar: Try hand-digging a hole 24" in diameter 48" deep. Ouch.)
Beautiful, i am in the process of doing this. I'm waiting for the dry well tub to arrive! I will follow your way, looks good. How is it holding up??
So far, so good! Good luck with yours! :)
How many bags of stone did you use in total?
Hi there! We used 38 bags.
Thanks for sharing; I am considering putting in a dry well. When the dry well is overwhelmed; did water backup to the downspouts or did water just overflow from the dry well?
Hi there! This one hasn't overflowed that I've seen. But our other one has once or twice. The water just came out the top of the dry well.
Perfect!,
You used perforated pipe, which will let water leak out before getting to the well. How did that workout?
So far, so good. It's what they said to do on This Old House, so that's what we decided to do.
@@jlew6977 perforated pipe doesn't allow the water to leak out before it gets to the well. Perforations are used to absorb surrounding groundwater and direct it to the well, which actually keeps the ground around the pipe more dry.
So far I think you’re both crazy.. in a good way :) Hbd
seems like a good gust of wind and u loose that cap on top.
I thought the same thing, but it has never blown off and we get extremely strong winds here. It's low enough to the ground that the grass protects it from blowing away. I'm sure you could secure it if you were concerned about it!
Nice video guys
If you need to install another dry well, rent a hydraulic post hole digger, use it to break-up the clay, digging is much easier that way.
Hi there! Thanks for the tip. I hope we don't need to dig anymore dry wells, but I'll keep it in mind!
What’s the song that starts at 4:40?? Thanks and good job
The song is Born Twice by Eyal Raz ua-cam.com/video/JWnwadFZvlM/v-deo.html
Hi there! It's called Born Twice by Mark Tracy. It's a free song on the editing software I use called Wondershare Filmora. Thanks for watching!
Nice video 👌👍
Good job! I like the bonus footage at the end!😉
Haha thanks! 😁
This is another homeowner who clearly doesn't know how to install a Dry Well properly, and I'll explain why. First, the hole for any Dry Well should be at least 2 to 3 times the diameter of the Dry Well itself, and this hole is clearly not. Second, the amount of crushed stone or gravel these people used is grossly inadequate for proper drainage. Again, this Dry Well requires 2 to 3 times the amount of crushed stone or clean washed gravel for proper drainage, and that's not what these people did. Third, the soil conditions need to be conducive to leaching, which does not appear to be the case... looks like clay to me, which does not absorb water. By the way, that's why the hole still had standing water on the second day. Fourth, it's the wrong type of pipe, and shopping at the local "big box store" is not where the professionals purchase the materials for this kind of a project. Fifth, the Filter Fabric or Landscaping Material should only be installed over the top of the crushed stone, not around the perimeter of the hole, because it will plug up with silt and prevent the water from dissipating. Lastly, depending on the state, city, town, and/or county you live in, specific environmental rules and regulations need to be followed, which very often require permits and inspections by local code enforcement officials. To be clear, different parts of the country have different rules and regulations, so it's very important to find out what is required by law or local codes and ordinances in your area, before you attempt this type of project. I'm an experienced Septic & Sewer Professional, and in my state, not just anyone can embark on the installation of a Dry Well without proper authority or approval. I suggest you consult with a Licensed Soil Scientist or Professional Engineer to make sure you don't violate any of the local rules and regulations in your city, town, or county.
Hi Craig! I appreciate your insight. There is room for improvement, but we did the best we could with our time and resources. It's been over a year now and it's working really well! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Ha you better watch out Rebecca, the internet hall monitor warriors are everywhere lol
Who in their right mind would go and get a permit for a project like this? Seem a little excessive and unnecessary.
@@Koston-xo6cx You'll notice I suggested or recommended consulting with a licensed professional to find out what is required in the city/town or county and state you live in. I can only speak to the environmental rules and regulations in my state, and after 20 years in the Septic and Sewer Industry, I can tell you most homeowners don't even bother to consider what is allowed in their area of the country. Not to mention, most homeowners typically do these types of projects without concern or consideration for the environment... not to mention local codes and ordinances.
Haha! Yep. Do more research before making an example of yourself. Although the guys from This Old House demonstrate by lining the entire perimeter of the hole with landscape fabric. Are you saying they did that wrong? But anyway, the music is cute. Oh well.
Looking forward to seeing some more of your videos. You deserve more views. Do you know of smzeus . c o m!? You could use it to help increase your subscribers!!!
I was under the impression that you needed a hole 4’ wide and 4’ deep. You also are suppose to put drainage fabric in the hole first when a base of drainage stone(1”-2” dia) then add about a foot of stone around the dry well. You have clay and two pipes. A strong rain will easily fill it and overflow it. It is possible a light to moderate rain will also. What are the sources draining into the well? One might not be enough. Also, are you deep enough to handle winter freezing temps? If it gets cold by you, that can freeze up at that depth. Use the NDS calculators and find out what you really need and how to do it right. In clay, that will be a guarantee redo
Hi Frank! I appreciate your insight. There is room for improvement, but we did the best we could with our time and resources. It's been over a year now and it's working really well! It has overflowed if we have several days of heavy rains, but it just flows out the top instead of rushing out the pipe like it did before. We're very happy with it so far! It solved our problem and the yard is looking great. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. :)
Shouldn't you knock out the 1" holes around the sides of the Flo Well to increase the drainage?
Yep! At 6:43 I knocked out all of the small holes. Then I knocked out only one of the big holes to connect to the pipe. :)
@@rebeccahartnett1980, ah, missed that. Thanks!

How are you enjoying the gimbal. I might get one
We like it a lot so far! Hopefully the software for the app gets updated though because the app that goes with it isn't very good. But you can use the gimbal just fine without the app.
