Keep those carrots good
Ever go to add a carrot to a meal and found it soft, limp or even moldy? I have, so I figured out how to store my carrots so they stay good for weeks on end.
First I remove them from the plastic bag they were packed in, examine them for soft spots, wiltiness, extra foliage or other problems such as mechanical damage. I then place all the sound carrots into a mesh produce storage bag, then place that inside a plastic produce bag, such as the one the carrots came in.
I store this in the crisper drawer, alongside the ethylene absorber I speak about in my vegetable storage video: ua-cam.com/video/hCd_rlVLW_4/v-deo.html This keeps them good for a good, long time.

Nip it good
Переглядів 35Рік тому
You’ve probably heard someone say, “Nip it in the bud.” Or “nip it in the butt” or even “nip them in the butt.” It is “nip it in the bud” and it originally meant this, picking a bud on a tree branch and nipping it off with your fingers before it becomes a branch. When you’re growing fruit trees, deciding which buds get to become branches is a big thing. It was such a useful phrase that it came ...
Taming the vine: How to manage indeterminate tomatoes
Переглядів 47Рік тому
Some of the best tomatoes are indeterminate, that is, tomatoes that sprawl out vines all over your garden. This can leave fruit hidden to get overripe and rot, attracting pests and causing problems. If you've grown bush-type tomatoes but have been intimidated out of trying delightful heirlooms or other indeterminates, here's how I tame the tangle: Get a large, sturdy, round tomato cage. Plant y...
Holographic tape to save your fruit harvest
Переглядів 82Рік тому
Anyone who has spent time, money and energy planting and tending fruit trees only to have birds eat their harvest knows the frustration. In the past gardeners have used nets, old pie pans, CDs, Christmas ornaments and all kinds of objects to keep the birds from taking their fruit, but these days there's a better solution: holographic tape. Here's how I protect my harvest: Identify a long branch...
The crispiest lettuce possible
Переглядів 37Рік тому
Who doesn't want the crispiest lettuce possible on their sandwich or in their salad? This method of storage keeps lettuce fresh for weeks and crispier than you could have dreamed. Harvest or buy lettuce that's crispy, then seperate from the stem and wash in plenty of water. Drain, then stuff into a plastic produce bag with the lettuce stems facing in. Tie the bag shut, trapping some air inside ...
Hairball remedy - the easy way
Переглядів 101Рік тому
I give a daily dose of hairball remedy to our cat Minerva to help with her vomiting, which we believe is due to infection by a bacteria known as Bordetella bronchiseptica, a condition commonly known as kennel cough. Hairball remedy: www.hartz.com/product/hartz-hairball-remedy-plus-for-cats-kittens-paste/ Rather than the standard procedure of smearing it on the roof of her mouth, which sometimes...
Getting more out of Better Than Bouillon
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Рік тому
Boullion concentrate has so many uses in the kitchen. But when the little tags that assure you that nobody opened it in the store are flapping around for the months it takes to go through a jar, it gets gross and annoying. Here's how I avoid that with a little help from a box knife. Bonus recipe: Beef broth and tomato drink Ingredients 1 teaspoon beef Better Than Boullion 1 cup of water 1 cup l...
Keeping veggies crisper
Переглядів 24Рік тому
Eating lots of vegetables is on our to-do lists, but when you go to make dinner and find a crisper drawer full of soggy, rotten vegetables, that blows your good intentions out of the water. Here's how I keep my vegetables fresh and ready for a delicious meal. 1. Buy fresh veggies and store them in a mesh bag inside a plastic produce bag 2. Store them promptly in the fridge crisper drawer 3. Kee...
Eating pho - with a jalapeno spoon?
Переглядів 74Рік тому
Who doesn't love a big bowl of pho from your favorite Vietnamese restaurant? I sweeten mine with sweet soy sauce (my bottle is Kwong Hung brand) instead of the usual hoison sauce. But today I'm also eating it with a spoon carved from a jalapeno pepper. Turns out it's delicious to the last spoonful.
Stopping ants in their tracks
Переглядів 62Рік тому
Ever notice a line of ants marching up your beloved fruit tree? They are farming, probably aphids or scale. To keep them out, a sticky layer of goo like Tanglefoot does a great job. Equipment Tanglefoot Tree Insect Barrier (tub) Tongue depressors Tangleguard tree band Duct tape Process Find a flat spot as high up on the tree trunk as foliage allows and secure a strip of tree band to it with duc...
Don't let one bad orange spoil the bunch
Переглядів 139Рік тому
Ever heard that one bad apple spoils the bunch? I've found the same to be true for apples, so I always sort them into baskets when I get a big bag of them home from the store. Firm, unblemished oranges go into the yellow basket to be eaten later, while any oranges with blemishes or soft spots go in the green basket to be eaten right away.
Stopping buttermilk in its tracks
Переглядів 11Рік тому
Buttermilk is a strange substance. Originally it was the leftovers from making butter from cream. These days it’s cultured milk, used for baking and making ranch. The truly amazing quality it has is its ability to escape. If I keep my buttermilk in the carton it comes in, it climbs out the top and oozes out through the seam in the bottom, turning my fridge shelf into a flakey mess. So when I ge...

My hiccup cure
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
There are few things more distracting than a case of the hiccups. Here's how I cure them. Ingredients Water Equipment Glass Process Fill the glass with water all the way to the top. Bend over the drink the water from the near edge of the cup. Swallow while still upside down. I've found this cures my hiccups much of the time.
I got so confused on me doing this, that I didn’t Even realize I lost my hiccups🤣🤣🤣 , this works .
just came from a reddit comment where you tagged your video - very informative, i enjoyed this! i usually just throw some frozen chicken thighs and veggie scraps in a stock pot and call it a day.
U got an OF ?
Thank you auntie!! I hope you make more videos in the future!
Thank you so much, Auntie Dawn! ❤
Im so impressed right now it just worked
What a smart, sexy woman!❤
What a sexy bbw .I would love to see more of you❤
That was awesome, id love a video on how to stop explosive diarrhea. Ive been shitting every hour for the past 18 hours.
😂😂😂 gross
Looks good
Thank you Dawn!
Thank you!
sorry that is nothing like toad in the hole
I ate this once in England. It was just amazing! The sausages were whole!
Looks great. Thank u for sharing ❤
Nice name. I’ll pass. Lol
Thank you. This looks yummy and easy to make. I'm going to make this for my family.
Add some baking powder and salt to the flour and milk mixture or just use self-rising flour.
What about using aluminum foil?
I've seen that used in some gardens, crinkled up so it doesn't tear in the wind. I like the holo tape because the fluttering action really seems to keep the birds away.
Honey, where did you place your camera? A stepladder?
I have a tiny kitchen with a funny layout. Hope you can see everything okay!
Very good idea!
Nice video I liked it
I love your cooking style.
I love pancakes! I use Bob's Red Mill Whole Wheat Flour or Pastry, too.
Looks yummy!
Nice helpful advice! I don't know how I got this recommended but you earned a subscriber :)
Great video!
Thank you Dawn. Simple, yet lovely recipe. Excellent presentation
Your hiccups sound very cute. How often do you get them? Would love to hear more of your hiccups sometime.
More often than I like. 😉 When they’re little like that, it’s more possible to stop them with drinking upside down or breath work. When they’re deep and painful, it’s usually a matter of waiting them out. If I get them while I’m filming, I’ll be sure to post it!
@@AuntieDawnsKitchen Next time you get the strong ones, would you please make a video?
How long was it cured for?
As a one pot bland soup man with limited expectations for my own "you can eat it" soup - I do still hold out hope for cooking my own good soup and bread in my old age. keeping a soup pot and fry pan going, able to cook each vegetable just right in sequence sounds like a step down the better soup road. Thank you for your detailed soup recipe and process so from watching the video about a cup? of lentils and head of broccoli - is the broccoli a regular part of the recipe or in the any "found" veg at hand category as the bit of pepper, I do not see lentils and broccoli on the ingredients list. thanks ps I'll pass on the jousting but with crusty french bread - yes.
how long in the fridge for the chuck?
A day for the salt to sink in, a day up to three or four for the air-cure
Salting the meat! Sorry I didn’t include the proportion in the description with the recipe: It’s 3/4 teaspoon of Diamond kosher salt per pound of meat. More if it’s a fattier cut
Those kitties are so cute!
Minerva and Lily are the best! I'm so glad you enjoy them, too
This was very helpful, thank you!
Hello! Your videos are getting soooo good! 👍 Keep it up 😊
Could one just place the sweet potatoes into the pressure cooker and skip the frying pan?
You’d probably want to cut the cook cycle on the beans and rice to 15 minutes or so to spend more time cooking the sweet potatoes. But you’d miss out on a lot of flavor.
What a tempting recipe you cooked!😍
Just tried this last night using turkey broth. I loved the simplicity of it! Always thought it would be more complicated. Thanks!
how delicious everything. I love your menu today yummy
Thank you! Tomorrow is bulgur wheat. Check it out!
Looks very tasty
There are few things as tasty when it's cold - or you have a cold!
Any recommendations for those of us that can’t eat dairy products anymore? 😢
A vegan sour cream or adding lemon juice to your preferred nut/seed milk might do for the buttermilk. Lard or shortening subs for the butter.
Bravo on this video! New sub here! I recently made Cheddar Biscuits on my page too and *your dish looks amazing!* Hope to stay connected! 😁
Thank you! Oh, your bagel and lox recipe has my mouth watering!
Is it important to start with crunchy peanut butter or would smooth work as well?
You're going to blitz it so much with the immersion blender that it doesn't matter, but I've always used crunchy.
Mind letting us know how you made the mixture of oat and hemp milk? I’m not used to making mixes. Thanks!
I usually add the hemp milk to cover and then the oat to top it up. Pre-mixing is unnecessary.
What I would give for "drink through the screen" technology right now...looks delish!
This chocolate is fast to make! I usually have it with toast, and by the time my toast beeps done, the chocolate is ready.
