"Place of Growth" is out now.
Hawktail is the instrumental acoustic quartet of fiddler Brittany Haas, bassist Paul Kowert, guitarist Jordan Tice, and mandolinist Dominick Leslie. Though at first glance it looks like an acoustic superpicker side-project, their all-original music is cohesive and unique, distinguishing them as an ensemble with a sound built from the ground up. Flush with orchestral sweeps and sparse vigils, with strains of the American South and the North Atlantic, this cosmopolitan sound is not what you’d expect from a string band.

Hawktail - The Amqui Session
One week before this session, Britt was walking through the neighborhood. She was approached by Justin, who was out mowing his lawn; he introduced himself and said "I'd like to make a video of your band." It just so happened that we were beginning to plan a filmed set for The Whippoorwill Arts Foundation in honor of the award they presented to Britt. So we had a director.
Historic Amqui Station in Madison, TN came to mind as a lovely location to film. The weather was beautiful that time of year, and the acoustics under the roof of the station suit our music. And it's safe, open air.
Dave Sinko jumped on board as per usual, accepting the challenge of operating a boom-mounted shotgun microphone: mixing the band on-the-fly by moving the sole microphone supplying all the audio.

What A/D converters was Chaloff/Sinko using in this mobile rig? Beautiful sound
Love these guys soooo much!!! So regret I missed seeing them last winter at the Grizzley Winery, near Ashland, due to a snowstorm 😢🤍🎶🖤
One of the greatest songs of ever.
FUCK YA!!!! I can't tell you how muchi Love this song. It's amazing, incredible.... I've listened to it so many times and every time it's still just as incredible. Thank you for the outlandish joy. And that's an understatement. statement.

Absolutely wonderful
From the early eighties I spent most of my time in Antiquities especially American Antiquities thanks guys
Beautiful
A search for Antique Gibson Recording King Guitars led me to Caitlin Canty that brought me to Brittany that brought me to Hawktail , to find my Ancestors living through these guys is amazing !
Nice to see a string band where the bass has so many interesting things to do.
I think this tune is so lovely. I imagine “The Lorax” as I listen…
I spent a week with jordan some years ago at a music fest and got to see how he rolls. The young man is a straight shooter ,and a disciplined hard working musician. I sat in his classes and got to hear his pesonal practice session's. He is a world class guitarist. Fact...
Brittany can play the fiddle like that and dance at the same time and never loose a stich in time.
These folks came to my home town,i have jammed with tgem and sat in Jordan's guitar classes.
so fire
Bravo!
Beautiful music
Beautiful!
See yall in St Johnsbury VT!
Wow. Beautiful and inspiring. Met Brittany and Paul this Summer at Chris Thile’s Acousticamp and was wowed there, too. Just had the pleasure of seeing Hawktail open for Nickel Creek last night, and this piece was the highlight of the whole evening for me. Cheers!
❤
Infinity begets nature.
So beautiful! No question who's running this show! Love ya'll and hope you come to Birmingham, Al sometime! I know it's tough but come anyway! Ya'll are too good to stay home! Schedule WorkPlay and we'll pack it out!
5 years, 50 thousand views, only 831 likes?! That's insane. This is magical!
Have enjoyed Britt since her days with Crooked Still.
Wow great craft. Perfection in all dimensions.
This is among the most beautiful pieces I've heard in a long time. A gorgeous composition, flawlessly played. Thank you so much! Looking forward to meeting some of you in a few weeks in Glen Cove.
Amazing! Thank you. Peace
Great! I love listening to Brittany Haas.
Perfect session. Love every minute of it. Hats off to you guys. 🥰🥰🥰
My 15 year old local grin-son was at the show a few nights back at the Ryman. I just got a text from him wherein he directed my attention to this track, Annbjørg, telling me the song reminded him of me. I may never receive a more thrilling and gratifying a compliment. Wow. Seeing his text took my breath away as did also my first hearing of this track seconds ago. I am grateful beyond words to have “ears to hear” such elegance as this. Thank you each and every and alltogether for living, breathing, soaring like this and generously taking us along onboard your flying-machine! Bravissimo!
Damn ! Such fine crafted musicianship
Lucky if that's a church
Please do another printing of this.
You don't hear many stringbands out of Nashville playing in 15/8 time. KUDOS!
They get a standing ovation trom me.
All such fine musicians. If they ever get back toghterand and tour ,I hope they come to Los Angeles California so I can get a front row seat. I can add them to my list of great shows seen.
Lovely music, very good musicians : I feel good 🥰
This band is a proof, that complex rythmic music can be played without drums 🙂 Excellent!
no drums in bluegrass my guy
@@svenlittlecross Well, plenty of percussion but not many drums
This band is my best discovery this year. Pure gem. Too little instrumental bluegrass these days!
Oh my, what a sizzling Melody!!! Definitely a fiddle composition I will learn!!!! Love You Hawktail!!
Well 🤣
Just, Wow!
i love this song so much
Creative Music to the Max! Old music to New Music.
This train station is chock full of amazing musical ability!!! What joyful music! Thank you Hawktail!!!!🙂🙏
