A difference between buying animal products and a plant-based product is that you KNOW lethal exploitation happened to produce the animal product. With plant-based products, it is POSSIBLE humans were exploited for it, not guaranteed, and if exploitation did occur, the likelihood it is LETHAL exploitation is essentially zero. Therefore, he’s making a false equivalence in two ways: in probability of exploitation and in severity of exploitative harm.
