My short answer, you ask? Ofc it is! When it comes to gameplay, the mech stages are definitely worse than they are in the first game, I won’t deny that, but for the other levels, like treasure hunting and speed levels, there are many times where SA2 improves off of the first game while maintaining the same formula (for the most part.) The downside of the treasure hunting levels are that the radar only lets you find one emerald at a time, but that doesn’t mean that the 2nd and 3rd emeralds can’t be found. You might get lucky. However, the stages aren’t being reused like the first game and they’re much wider and more open and you can explore more of them. The first game straight-up reused parts of Sonic’s stages and you couldn’t explore much. Sonic/Shadow’s stages do improve off of the first game more often. The levels do start off linear, but as the game goes on, they have more paths you can take, and they try to challenge you more. Sonic’s moveset has also improved, not only with the bounce bracelet, but with the somersault, you can perform tricks while doing a run which is a nice little touch to Sonic’s moveset. The first game didn’t have that making it feel even more unfinished. As for the boss fights, they are definitely much more challenging than in the first game. In the first game, they were too easy and the only one that you couldn’t beat within 30 seconds was Chaos 4, but only because he takes so long to beat as Sonic and Knuckles yet isn’t even all that challenging. They start off quite easy, but they gradually get harder as you go on. The final boss of the entire game isn’t easy to beat either. As for everything else besides the gameplay, like the visuals and story, they’re all pretty ahead of their time. The story was an improvement off of the first game, and there isn’t too much happening at once like the first game. The characterization for every character is some of the best in the entire series, as all of the characters feel like themselves compared to how they were in the 2010s. It sucks how it all went downhill for most characters after SA2, though. Like the Dreamcast version of the first game, the visuals have honestly aged really well. It also helps that when the game was ported to GameCube, they didn’t ruin the lighting engine like they did with Sonic Adventure DX, and it thankfully remained that way for all other ports. There were some downgrades like with the cutscene lighting, but it doesn’t affect the quality of the game as much as SADX. The graphics for Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast aged well, but the DX port really hasn’t. It at least has shading at night on GameCube, but after that, there is no lighting engine anymore. This game also has my favorite designs for the characters in terms of their models, from the palettes and designs. The Dreamcast Era just had it with the looks of the characters. The palettes are also an improvement as the characters don’t look as pale as they did in the first game. The GUI is also better as it looks much more sleek than the first game. The first game’s GUI looks so plain that it makes the game feel like some unreleased computer game. As for the voice acting and OST, the voice acting is pretty underrated imo. The characters all have fitting voices and all sound natural. It has flaws, but it’s mostly due to the bad direction and lack of context. As for the OST, this game’s OST sweeps. They mixed rock and metal with many other music genres and the results were amazing. They hit the balance between the more tame and plain OST of the first game and the over-the-top edginess of Shadow The Hedgehog’s OST. There are more details that I can go over, but I think you get the point. In conclusion, is it worth playing today? Again, yes it is. The first game also holds up and SA2 still has its flaws, but they don’t ruin the experience entirely imo. Though we have to remember to appreciate the first game regardless, as it did set the standards for the next game and many other games afterwards.

Luckily I still have all my consoles, including my Dreamcast from 1999, and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are still one of my favorites to play.

You can also play it on Xbox Series X/S, because you can purchase it digitally and 'cause it came out on the Xbox 360, backward compatibility is possible
