Good, watchable movie. Interesting story and solid acting. Fun factoid: John Gavin, who played Johnny, was the ambassador to Mexico during one of the Ronald Reagan terms. I can't remember if it was in the first four years or Reagan's second. He also, while still pursuing acting, served, for a time, as president of the Screen Actor's Guild. (SAG) 🎬

This woman Victoria is driven deep with evilness I'm only 31 minutes in, OMG!

Creepy old spinster woman Victoria (who is actually only 39 years old in the film this is why they "blackened" her eye sockets. The role was played excellently by the conniving & evil Mary Morris who could've been the wife or girlfriend of Dracula's Dr. Van Helsing. Actor Edward Van Sloan. Mary has that same kind of slow body movement & vocal intonation). This remarkably, is Mary's only screen credit. She returned full-time to the stage for the rest of her career. Paramount decided it wanted to sculpt her into a female Boris Karloff for horror films but, she would have none of that. Caroline played by Ann Revere (a descendant of Paul Revere) was nominated 3 times for an Academy Award & won for "National Velvet." She worked until 1976 in films & TV shows. Ann shows her acting overwhelming in this film. It's not easy to portray someone with angst, anxiety & fragility. Her facial expressions are played to perfection. Evelyn Venable is absolutely gorgeous, charming & an excellent actress throughout. Who couldn't fall in love with her? Halliwell Hobbes (Mr. Chase with the pearl box) appeared in one Sherlock Holmes film with Basil Rathbone & in the Reginald Owen version of "A Christmas Carol." He's the clergyman who scolds the kids for sliding on the ice & then when they're gone decides to have a good slide too. This film is a good thriller. Almost as if Paramount was dramatically & with set designs & lighting trying to cash in on the Universal Pictures creepiness quotient ("Dracula," "Frankenstein" & "The Invisible Man").

Hopeless movie nerd that am, the slow song played at the dance 35:00 in is also the song played in the romantic car scene with Craig Steven’s and Ali’s Talton in “The deadly mantis” both films were 1957 by universal studios….just sayin’

Don't watch 30's movies...BUT...I agree with another reviewer. This was an exception; suspenseful, dramatic and balanced acting for a 1930s production. It's definitely worth watching. A villain, a love story, a friendship and the courage to stand against evil - always a good story. ENJOY the VIEW. peace.
