    Blurred background is ok, in fact fine for portrait, where the only part of the image to be considered is the face and lighting, but not for much else and definitely not a must have. It has become an 'in thing' which has not done a lot for photography generally. In fact a lot of what people may call good today was a sign of cheap lens construction for fast lenses in days past (even though they cost more). A fast lens was not for blurred backgrounds, but for enabling a shot in poor light and very very few fast lenses were sharp wide open either. Being sharp wide open was something that cost a rather large amount of money and was not for mortals. For shots like the man stirring the pot at 5:07 a blurred background would lose context and therefor be a "what is that image". Without context an image is incomplete. I have this wonderful 14-150 lens and bought it for my EP2 in a past era. Since then it has been on the first EM5 just days after their release and then the EM1 also days after release. Still in use on the EM1, I don't need anything else for walk around.

    I had great hope that your "hack" would solve my similiar problem of my phone disconnecting from the controller on my Mavic mini but alias it did not work. Very helpful and some nice shots. I fully agree with everything you said. I might have taken a 17 or 25mm prime rather than the 45 because indoor group shots are difficult with the 45 IMO. Still the bokeh on that 45 is great. What do you think of the bokeh on the 14-150 at 150mm? It looks decent to me.

    • @samdavisphotographer

      Thanks! To be honest, I've not paid too much attention to the bokeh. All I can say is I've never thought "wow, that bokeh sure is ugly" when using this lens. So I think decent / pretty good is a fair assessment.

    I recommending putting the zoom on f8 or 9 and leaving it there. Use shutter speed and iso to control exposure. Sure you may get a lot of noise in your photos but the new AI denoise feature in adobe camera raw is amazing. For super dark scenes like astrophotography it doesn't work so well but that's not what this lens is for anyway. Adobe camera raw AI denoise has shocked me in its capabilities. I've shot at iso12500 and used the denoise at 100 percent and the results looked like I shot the original file at iso200! I was happily shocked.

    I did not realize the 14-150 is weathersealed. I have the EM-5 III, so that would make a good combination. My main lens is the 12-45 f/4 PRO and I also have the 45 f/1.8, which is fantastic, and which I use to photograph high school basketball games. Another shirt pocket lens is the 9-18, which is tiny and light for when you want to go really wide. For long nature photography, I use the Leica 100-400, which does a surprisingly good job at insect photography. When I'm out in the field, I never use a camera bag. Everything has to go around my neck or in a pocket, and, of course, no tripod because the image stabilization is so good.

    • @samdavisphotographer

      Yes it's weather sealed to a certain degree and I've never had any problems. You will notice a difference in sharpness compared to your 12-45mm ( my 12-45 is incredibly sharp), particularly in the corners.

    More food for thought! I have the 12-40mm & 40-150mm pro lenses, the 45mm f1.8 and for sport the Panasonic 100-300mm ii. I used to have the 14-150mm the first time I had an Olympus system and do wonder whether it's time to find another. Having limited mobility and carrying capacity, the 14-150mm / 45mm f1.8 does indeed offer something useful. The probability of going out for a walk with both f2.8 pro lenses is very low. For trips out where I don't stray far from the car the f2.8 zooms are fine. One thing possibly worth mentioning is that the importance image sharpness is always relative to the intended viewing medium. For social media sharing and modestly sized prints, the 14-150mm is almost certainly going to be sharp enough.

    • @samdavisphotographer
      @samdavisphotographer 9 місяців тому

      Absolutely agree. I think the end purpose of the images should be considered before making a lense choice. I'm more likely to pick up a pro lense for a gig with a paying client than the superzoom, as they are expecting premium sharpness. End use of images should be considered before picking up a lense. That said, if your gear weighs you down enough to potentially prevent you taking images, then I would go with the lighter option.

    I'm of the opinion that when you're just out and about, walking around and taking pictures, a superzoom is often worth the compromise. Changing lenses all the time is just a pain. I don't have an ILC so I can change lenses every time I change subjects; I have it so I can use an appropriate lens when I want to and aren't STUCK with one built into my camera.

      Thanks! I did use the 100-400mm when I was up there last March once Tes had left (as it was a lens I owned). The main thing with hares is that if you get too close, they just bolt. So you really want top performance at the long end of the lens. The 300mm in this sense is perfect as it had a lower fstop at f4 and so let's in more light, plus also very sharp at f4 so no need to stop down. The 100-400 still performed well and I got some great images with it. I just think the 300 is better for this particular species.

    • @samdavisphotographer
      @samdavisphotographer 11 місяців тому

      It's pretty good to be honest. No animal or subject detection like on the om1 though. The single point AF works well still for me. The C-AF tracking has its heart in the right place, but sadly not good enough to be 100% dependable so I don't use it. The only other thing I'd say is some people might prefer the larger grip of the om1 when using these larger lenses. I tend to carry the main weight of the kit in my left hand on the lens and my right just does the controls and directs the camera, so doesn't bother me as much. OM-5 is a fantastic all rounder camera, OM-1 better for wildlife

    Thankyou. I've had a problem RC not connecting to mobile device, was getting a bit fed up as sometimes it would connect and then not connect. I'm new to this Drone Hobby, but seeing your post has helped, I have reversed the cable and that seems to have done the trick will see how it goes. Thankyou again.

      Glad it helped! Let me know if turning it around works in the long run.

    Thanks Sam, Dont you find it ANNOYING... when changing shutter and apperture and 10 overlays symbols pop up on either side of the screen? I find it extremely annoying.

      I haven't really noticed it to be honest. Then again I've set the evf so that all the data, symbols etc are along the bottom so the picture stays clean.

      @@samdavisphotographer ahh fair enough... yes that setting in the evf gets rid of it... However in liveview its still there... so anoying. Cheers anyways 😉
