    Does morphing your drawing often to get shape and perspective right affect your ability to draw better overall? I feel I rely on it too much that I can’t do traditional mediums well

    • @Zxu.Inking
      @Zxu.Inking 13 днів тому

      You mean I always like to use warp tool in Photoshop right? Yes, it’s a really powerful tool that you can not have in traditional drawing so it probably gives you a feeling like your digital art is better than your traditional art. I mean it’s all about practice, if you practice more on traditional drawings you would do warp tool “in your mind”. Btw, nowadays even a lot of traditional artists created rough ideas in digital way, once they figured out everything they “transfer” it to traditional media again. lol I know sounds like cheating, but since traditional artists want to bring the best artwork and sell a highest price, no one cares how they started the artwork.

I think you have a very nice blend of eastern and western influences. I feel the same way about linework. I don't know why, but if I render someone else's lines, it looks fine. However, if I do my own, it's terrible unless I change it as I render. I feel it might come down to shapes and not seeing them in 3D. The worst part is that going over linework with multiple layers makes drawing a lot less fun, and usually, the result comes out worse. I wonder if it's something that should be overcome. Should I be focusing on getting rid of lines to learn faster? It's hard to find content that doesn't focus on lines and traditional construction. This year, I have been going hard on drawing courses, and I feel like it's like walking backwards.

      I totally feel you. I’ve been there too, stuck, didn’t know how to improve. Looking for good teachers but ended up got bunch of frauds. What I did was just keep practicing, and asking questions to all art teachers I could reach out to. Trust me, art is an endless journey, no matter how far you go you would still have questions. Like Craig Mullins, he’s still chasing his “rabbit”, at his level no one could teach him anymore, so he has to figure it out by himself. That’s why I do UA-cam videos here. And hopefully I’ll do more videos on draw-overs, which is collecting everyone’s drawings and correct them, improve them so that whoever is making the same mistakes would know the solutions :).

    • @deadsm

      @Zxu.Inking I'll keep that in mind. I am glad that I am not alone in wanting to move forward no matter what. Knowing that you never really feel satisfied, even when others look to you for guidance, is reassuring. I am getting to the point where I can usually identify technical issues and resources to solve them. I am kicking myself though because I have had no social media for the last 15 years and thus can't rely much on natural critique or art friends to learn from. I'm glad that I finally have started asking more and more for feedback and have been posting work regularly. It's hard to get good critique once you get to the level where you need someone who has solved the same issues themselves. When it does happen, though it's like a massive shortcut in getting to the next level. I look forward to your next videos as I always feel like I learn from your insights and how you work.

    @EldritchUniverse 22 дні тому

    Let me ask you a question. But I'd like you to pick a side, just like you did for this video, where you didn't want to sit on the fence by saying "do both quality and quantity". What's a better and faster way to improve: By creating full artworks (which incorporate everything) or do concentrated studies like spending time doing anatomy only, lighting only, perspective only etc? Obviously for beginners creating artworks is much harder because everything comes together. But I feel like many people give up on art because they're told to draw 100 noses and they just give up because it's so boring. I'm one of those people. I just can't draw arms in perspective. It's not fun. But at the same time trying to create artworks is really, really hard at the beginning. Proportions are hard. Rendering is especiaaally hard. Yet at the same time it's somehow more fun. But the question is how effective is it compared to doing studies of the fundamentals. (Most people seem to be leaning towards studying the fundamentals and then trying to incorporate those into artworks. Which is probably the safest way to learn but again... it's just sooo boring.) That might even be a whole new topic worth discussing. I don't like practicing art but I LOVE creating art. I hate struggling with perspective and rendering but I LOVE visualizing my ideas. So I always wonder if there are tricks and shortcuts to get to the finish line quicker. The biggest game changer for me personally was incorporating DAZ 3D into my workflow. Creating the elaborate reference in there and then try to redraw and repaint the 3D artwork by hand to have the painterly look and feel I'm going for.

    • @Zxu.Inking
      @Zxu.Inking 22 дні тому

      I never asked my students to practice fundamentals individually like you said 100 noses, or only lighting, only shading. I mean you need to learn from design process, that would be more fun and useful, and btw for every single design you need to go through line work, shading perspective and lighting anyway. The ugly truth that some teachers only teach you fundamentals because teaching design is HARD! And they probably don’t know how to design themselves, lol. Only teaching fundamentals is a lot easier, quicker for them to make courses and earn your money, lol. For example, like you said you are not good at drawing arms in perspective. Then you just specifically create a small project emphasizing on arms, like how about you create a small project like a cool humanoid octopus, and the tentacles will be 8 arms in different directions in perspective? To be more fun, make this character as a chef, lol. Btw these arms could be 2 human arms, 2 robot arms, 2 like claws, 2 giant, sick, infected, polluted tree branches…..(I’ve got too many ideas, lol). Then you need to make several rough ideas, once you decide which one to go deeper, you will need to really spend time on the perspective of the arms. This will be the hard part but fun, and it’s the main purpose of this project. If you really spend time on this project, when you finish, you will be a master of drawing arms in perspective! Then you move on to your next weakness!

    hey man i have been watching your videos, you have been doing some cool art!, talking about AI and Photobashing i have a feeling that these are two complete different animals, you are right some people at the time got trigered with Photobashing like 15 years ago ? but honestly ,it wasn't that controversial.... not at level of AI, now i did Photobashing ! for me it was something great but i din't know composition color theory nothing, so it was pretty bad lol, but let me tell you if you, wanted to get to the result you have a plethora of avenues to get to that result, a buch of options and paths to take, and i think that is where it falls all your skills as an artist, unlike AI i feel like you are in a echo chamber of creativity sort to say, you are tied to an algorithm machine learning and stuff, and also the data base used it is not ethic ( this is the problem for most Artist.... it is not the thing of " they r using the cheating code" ) i know if you where doing studies with photobashing ( just for you ) you could use practically any image on the internet, but ... if you where in a Concept art studio, things where serious , you needed to make clear that you where using a Legal use of images otherwise you could get in big troubles that's another big big difference, another difference... much of the people using Photobashing they where really good at Art, they where using it to speed up the process .not for enhancing results, unlike AI, now all the talk in general of "you must use every tool"... i feel like most people and artist are using this like a mantra all most, but they aren't learning other tools , like Blender or SketchUp, substance painter etc...you know what i mean ? personally i pretty much enjoyed Photobashing in the past, but i'm not looking back, i'm on a path of getting better on my own skills i thought i was ok, but now i know that i must level up haha, once again your channel is great

      Thank you for the comment. I mean, photo bashing can make design or painting a lot faster like what concept designers are doing for movie concept designs, but I totally agree, it’s hard to avoid copyright issues, umm… some artists said if you use lower than 30 percent of each photo would be fine…but I doubt that. I personally prefer just do it by myself, maybe just involve some colors from some photos but trying my best not let people see the original photo. AI, for my personal opinion, it’s still a baby now, we need to be able to do more or more unique than Ai otherwise we will be easily replaced. Anyways, art is all about combining things we’ve seen and produce a new thing, Ai will have way way bigger resources than our human brains, I guess the only way we can survive is just producing more unique designs than Ai… I mean, it’s easy to say than doing, we will see…

    • @birmix
      @birmix Місяць тому

      @@Zxu.Inking yeah the phothobashing you did here was great, you did a complete transformative use, I think that if AI was ethic it could be used in a very specific way, like part of a mood board ? and to be honest there is a lot of hype and speculation around this tech, eventually things are going to settle down, and let's hope that laws or something help, cause we need some kind of regulation on this, and I think we could use AI eventually in the workflow but I don't think... i mean we are going to use AI, but it won't look like this (generative art by itself )i think we are going to use it in a different way ( if everything goes well) not like now, welp anyway keep it up !

    Would you use the same approach now if you tried to draw more slender characters like women or men without armor? That painting had a silhouette with very strong shapes where shape based design with the lasso tool seems to work wonderfully - but what about when it's more about the base human figure?

    • @Zxu.Inking
      @Zxu.Inking Місяць тому

      Thanks for asking. Now I do all drawings all themes with this lasso tool technique, even you draw slender characters, because it forces you to have an image and cool silhouette first before you moving on. Having interesting silhouette is really important. To evaluate a design is cool or not normally just need 1-3 seconds. You can do a little practice, you go on Pinterest and keep browsing, you can scroll a little faster than normal, and you will realize the designs slow you down or make you stop to take a closer look are the ones that have cool/ interesting silhouettes.

    • @Zxu.Inking
      @Zxu.Inking Місяць тому

      I had some students showed me their cool character designs and explained for an hour, but the silhouette is no different from a simple human figure. So ended up I always like “Great idea+boring silhouette =bad design, your idea is wasted…”

    There are paint programs that makes this technique a lot easier as they allow you to draw a region like in lasso tool that then gets autofilled with current color, making you waste less time of switching back and forth between paint bucket and lasso tools. I think Krita has such thing, but not sure. Definitely ClipStudio has it, though whether it is in the default brushes or on its asset store, I don't know.

    I love the final drawing and even more so how you've started off in this drawing. The shape approach. I'm still very early on in my art journey but I find myself hating doing sketching with lines more and more. It's just... not fun. The proportions always look bad and off. And I don't know if that's just me not being good enough or if I'm one of the people who gravitate more towards creating with shapes instead of lines. Supposedly there are people who perceive stuff as mass instead of outlines / contours.

    • @Zxu.Inking
      @Zxu.Inking Місяць тому

      I hate line works too! I just like to use line works to do rough general big ideas. Technically you can practice, but it’s just no fun for me either. And sometimes when I’m done with the line drawing but when I start rendering/shading I realized the design is lame and cliche, but I couldn’t find that out in line drawings. I mean there are different types of artists, shading type, line work type. If there’s no fun, just change another drawing process, like me doing in my newest video, using lasso tool to shade, no line works at all, that’s more fun for me. Remember, enjoyment determines the quality of your work! If something doesn’t work to you just change another way :).
