Demonstrating how I hold needles when knitting. In this second of two videos I show how to hold the needles when moving the yarn from the back to the front of the work, and back again, when working rib (1 stitch plain, 1 stitch purl), and how to hold the needles when working stocking stitch (1 row plain, 1 row purl).

    Hi just to clarify as a beginner knitter for a jumper when the instructions say decrease three stitches at the beginning of each alternate row to shape the armholes. Does it mean I cast off at the beginning of every second row? If I do this it may be something I am doing wrong. Would you kindly please explain how I can cast off the first 3 stitches at the beginning of each alternative row. Thank you. Excellent tutorial too.

    Thank you very much for your tutorial! I've been trying, for days now, to find a method of sewing the shoulder seams together on my finished knit summer "tee." Every video showed a method that is worked on sweaters done in Stockinette Stitch. However, the top section of my sweater was done in Seed Stitch, so I can't use their method. No one has yet been able to offer any solutions for this, other than "next time, add one more row and do it in all Knit stitches, rather than in Seed Stitch." That's fine for "next time," but I still need a solution for right now. Then I found your video! I love this idea of using a crochet hook, & I think it will work just fine on my top. 🥳 If I may, let me just double-check with you ..... When I am doing this, should I hold the right sides together, as I am sewing up the shoulders? And, you mentioned that you are left-handed; does it matter which direction I sew it up, right to left or left to right? I am right-handed. Well, I will need to sew up one shoulder, then pick up stitches to do a small neckline, then sew up the other shoulder. So, I think I need to sew from the outside of the shoulder, moving in to the center. Does that sound right? Thank you, again, for your video. 😃🧶🪡🪢

      Thank you for your kind comments. I always prefer to crochet the pieces of my garments together whether crocheted or knitted, it is so much faster and neater. I am in fact right handed. Yes, hold the right sides together when you are joining the pieces so that the seam is on the inside of the garment. It doesn’t really matter which direction you work in when joining I.e. from neckline to shoulder or vice versa but, because I am right handed I start on the RH side of a garment and work to the left. Hope this is helpful.

    Do you iron or press the pieces before stitching

    • @lonaslessonsincrochetandkn102
      @lonaslessonsincrochetandkn102 2 роки тому

      I never follow instructions to iron or press a knitted garment - not even one purchased from a store. I only ever steam my knitted garments. I don't block garments before steaming either. I lay them out, steam them from about 4 inches above the garment and pat them into shape and pat the edges a bit flat and let them dry out. I find that if you iron or press a knitted garment it ruins the texture and elasticity of the fibre and flattens and stretches the garment. Hope this is useful.

The books for beginners don't say cable half lol.....I get very tangled with stitches so I bought a hooked cable needle which helps stitches stay on then I'll tuck the needle in work too like you've shown. Your video is very helpful. I have a question. On the pattern I am using at home it says to decrease one at the end of each row for the next five rows. And THEN it says to decrease one on each end of the next three alternate rows. So I get the alternate rows instruction, I'm just wanting it made clear to me that I am to decrease one on each knit and pearl row when it speaks of the "next five rows."

      Hi there, thank you for your comment. I was quoting from the pattern. I haven't made many videos this year as I have been working but I will make some more as soon as I can. I will remember to explain the terminology of a pattern in different ways as we all have different interpretations of the instructions. Hopefully then I can help every subscriber and viewer of my videos.

      Hi Donna, apologies for the delay in replying, I work full time but I am coming to the end of my employment contract and I'm looking forward to refocusing on my hobbies. The LKC means Lona's Knitting Class and the LCC means Lona's Crochet Class. I used the initials to help me when I was searching for my own videos. People have told me that these are not helpful to people searching for videos so I set up my own Channel named "Lona's Lessons in Knitting and Crochet" and I have moved all my videos on to it.

    You say cast off! But do you mean decrease? Your videos when showing are a bit too fast i have to repeat it over & over! can you do slower please? My pattern says decrease 1 stitch but I've seen some slip 2 then knit tog. Is that OK still too? Thanks for videos. They're very helpful but a bit fast.

    • @lonaslessonsincrochetandkn102
      @lonaslessonsincrochetandkn102 3 роки тому

      Hi Donna. I would interpret Cast Off as : passing a stitch over the one in front of it and this can be done several times depending on the number of stitches to be cast off. I would interpret decreasing as knitting / purling multiple stitches together. Apologies if you think my videos are too fast, have you gone to the Settings icon (the cog wheel at the bottom of the screen) to slow the video down? Settings / Playback speed / select the speed you want to work with. You can use the Settings to slow down all videos or speed them up. Let me know if you use this and if it helps. Good luck!

      Hello Sanhita. Yes you can use the same method of armhole shaping in an adult sweater. I can't explain the fundamentals of using measurements to do the shaping, it really depends on the pattern and the size of the person you are making the garment for. Apologies for the delay in replying, I work full time but I am trying to refocus on my hobbies and reply to many comments on my videos. I am going to knit my first sweater (adult size) and was looking for an easy to follow tutorial to learn off of, which was surprisingly difficult to find. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos!

    Thank you for this video! I am trying to make my first knitted vest, but I'm struggling with understanding the different methods when it comes to shaping armholes. One tutorial I've watched shapes the armholes by for instance *knit row: k2, ssk, knit until 4 stitches remain, k2t, k2. Purl row: purl all stitches* This is for a vest with longer armholes, and decreases a total of 16 stitches. Another tutorial however, wants me to simply bind off a set number of stitches on each row. What is the difference between these two methods? Does it give a different shape? Thanks in advance!

    • @lonaslessonsincrochetandkn102
      @lonaslessonsincrochetandkn102 3 роки тому

      Hello there, thank you for your comments. The difference between the methods are: K2 ssk is a gradual shaping, the shaping is of a 'sloped' appearance; the binding off a set number of stitches is what I would describe as a 'stepped' appearance which is commonly used for underarms, neckline and shoulder shaping. Hope this helps and apologies for taking so long to get back to you, I work full time and I am now reducing my hours so that I can refocus on my hobbies.
