    I think my favourite gaming experience this year was playing Dune: War for Arrakis with my husband. It was just such an epic experience and so much fun! Yes, it took awhile to set up and learn, but I think the effort was worth it. 😊

    QotW: mine was bittersweet. My best friend of over 40 years and his wife (and my great friend) of 30 years drove over an hour to the house for a day of gaming. She had been diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer about 5 months previous. The outlook was somewhere between 12 and 18 months, with the average being 14-16. I taught them (and their adult son) Return to Dark Tower over the course of the afternoon. Reveled in the companionship and nostalgia of a game we had played (although quite different) when we were 7th graders. I got to hang out with my dear friends for 6-7 hours doing what I love. 4 weeks later she passed. I'm so thankful for that last "game day" with her (even though we didn't know it at the time. There never really is enough time, is there?) Ill cherish that memory forever.

    My favorite moment this year happened at GenCon. I decided to pitch a couple game ideas I had to a publisher (I've never designed a game before). To my surprise, they immediately said "we want that game" for one of my ideas. Within a few weeks, I had a contract & became a signed game designer (stay tuned for more information as I'm able to share it).

    QotW: There was no single experience I can think of, but broadly speaking it was an awesome year for discovering new cooperative games with my wife. Far too many to listt hem all, but our favorite new-to-us cooperative games this year were (in order we played them): Dorfromantik, Unsettled, Daybreak, Legendary Encounters: The Matrix, Lord of the Rings The Card Game, and Keep the Heroes Out.

    Is PAX more like GenCon in that it’s mostly for buying games, or is it more like dice tower east where it’s more about playing games? I live near Pittsburgh and have been interested to go.

    • @TabletopToolbox
      @TabletopToolbox 7 днів тому

      @ryancombs2722 PAX is probably 8% of GenCon - there are demo spaces, gaming space, and an expo hall, but all of it is just smaller than GenCon. Last year the gaming area was packed like I'd never seen - a little nervous about this year, but I usually go and grab a few games, and I'm going to try to get some play time in this year!

    Looking forward to getting Santa's Workshop to the table this year. I got it new last Christmas season but never got it played. Go to games for non gamer family include Dragonwood, King of Tokyo, and Trekking Through History. Non-gamers tend to grok the concepts in those games pretty easily. Great Ratchet as always!

    Thanks for the first impressions, Jeff. I’ll be curious what you think after the 2nd play of Deep Shelf. 🙂 In defense of our score theming, you are building a colony ship to another world. You are not allied with any government, many of which have now become hostile with you. The story becomes clearer in the campaign but… You need to secure land both for extraction rights, secure shipping, and as a mooring place for the building site launch pad. Rare metals are needed to build the colony ship. Almost all upgrades are double purpose, they improve your submarine but would also help a spaceship/future colony. Money doesn’t matter if civilization collapses. Use some of it to buy the ores you need to research better upgrades!. 😁 The game ends either when you complete your research and can leave safely…or when the biosphere collapses entirely, and you are forced to leave with the best you have at the time. Happy exploring!

    I always look forward to playing games that are little off the beaten path - really good games that don't otherwise get much love on BGG. This weekend my wife and I will probably play a couple of those. First up is Peacemakers: Horrors of War (#7,662 on BGG) and after that will be Project EOS Rise (#17,379). The latter is a space-themed game - if you're not aware of it, you should check it out. So, this weekend it'll be about giving thanks for lesser-known games and their small/boutique publishers.

    Hello My beautiful people Welcome back Jeff and I’m sorry for your loss. I’m so sorry I know how it feels a lost one of your friends, I lost one of my cats about 3 years ago and it took awhile, but I got a new cat a few months after and she’s one of the most amazing cats I have been friends with. I hope you get to heal soon. Cherish and remember your pal and his memories. Question of the week - I believe that any way you like its a good way to store your games. It just depends of how you like your games to look. In my head it looks kinda messy when they are storage horizontally it could be just me, and I believe that vertically makes a lot of more sense because of the time I spent at the library and all the time I blew with my friends alphabetically organizing their dvd and cd collection plus one of them is a librarian. We brought Letters dividers and we did the same with my board game collection plus my video game collection at home so in my head it make sense and it’s easier for me to get to things because they are alphabetized, plus if you stored games horizontally what happens when you put a heavy game in the bottom, you will have to hold the top stock while pulling the bottom game at the same time and pray that they don’t land with enough force that could shuffle the contents inside the top games, or viceversa, but like I said before that could be just me. I see my board game collection and I enjoy the looks and level of organization it has, and I know that anyone who has been in a library can find any game alphabetically in my board game library I’m proud of that, and it’s nice and lovely definitely tough to keep it like that, but worth it either way. Blessings Jon

    QOTW - Aesthetically I like the way vertical stacking looks and the ability to grab a game without moving others above/below it. I tend to store new games shrink wrap vetically and most games opened horizontally. Anything in zip lock bags can handle vertical but trays and inserts means a messy open if not stored horizontally. So a real mixture, but I almost always have a game vertically face out at the front of the kalax for show and to hide any organisational mess behind it!

    I am so sorry to hear about Tinny, Jeff…. They really are part of the family. Our little dog is 17 years old, and we know the inevitable is coming soon. I guess I’m comforted by the knowledge that we have given her a loving home, and that every day we have with her is precious. I shelve my games both ways. 😊 It depends on the game. Some are simply components in baggies, so they are fine standing up, but others would end up a nightmare of jumbled parts; so they get the horizontal treatment.

  • @MarkB-uu5we

    QofW - We do both. Most are vertically, but some get a little too disheveled for my liking if we store them vertically, so they are put horizontally. Recently, as we have begun to run out of shelf space, I have begun to rearrange similar smaller sizes (Carcassonne size box, for example) horizontally to allow more boxes to fit on a shelf. (Greg hates it! He votes vertical all the way)

    Very sorry to hear about Tinwald. =( But it was very heartwarming to hear and see pictures of the good times spent together. Those little four legged furballs really are companions for life. A quote I've heard that seems to ring true (at least for me), "The difference between friends and pets is that friends we allow into our company, pets we allow into our solitude." And lastly, no amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat. And no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch. He'll always be around in one form or another. Take care of yourself Jeff.

    Sorry for the loss of your friend :( For QotW: The right way is horizontally. Only in exceptional circumstances (such as lack of shelf space) a board game box may be squeezed vertically beside other horizontal boxes. Also my small games are stuffed into a drawer haphazardly so that I can shut the drawer :)

  • @tteshera
    @tteshera 27 днів тому

    Mostly vertical to make it easier to take games out and put them back. And, I like the "bookshelf" aesthetic. But, there's some horizontal games to fill in spaces here and there, and for some sections of games we don't play much or at all any more (but keep for sentimental reasons).

  • @ITOmarHernandez
    @ITOmarHernandez 27 днів тому

    I stack both ways, depends on the game(s) and its contents. Some games, like Cthulhu DMD, I stack horizontal because I will typically pull the entire stack at once so horizontal is just easier for that. Also, sometimes the game doesnt have the best insert or organization and vertical would mess it all up. Other times, vertical is just easier to get a game out.

    Losing a best friend is probably the lowest feeling ever. We continue to make it through by seeing Google randomly bring up collages and Memories based on our past pooches. Having the memories, especially the ones you lovingly shared with us, are the way you survive times like this. Hang in there and play with the ones who want to fill in the space left behind. They know you need it.

  • @realjeremybrooks
    @realjeremybrooks 28 днів тому

    QotW: I mix it up, both vertically and horizontally. Games in shrink tend to stay horizontal since I don't need to worry about components shifting. I have 2 or 3 gorgeous covers (Amazonia, Santa's Workshop, Destinies) are vertical and front facing. 90% are horizontal.
