A huge club hit from the early 90’s with a heavy disco influence, this remix of the track from the London based Acid Jazz group featuring the insatiable vocals of N’Dea Davenport was remixed courtesy of Joey Negro aka Dave Lee and still sounds fresher than ever.
The Brand New Heavies began in Ealing, West London in 1985 as an instrumental acid jazz group called ‘Brother International’ and was centered around songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy , who still remain the core members of the group since its founding.
The group came up with the Heavies name after signing their first record contract, borrowing from a liner note on a James Brown single declaring the artist "Minister of New Super Heavy Funk".
The group soon gained a cult following in the London club scene and signed to the Cooltempo label as Acid Jazz replaced Rare Groove in clubs.
The group’s debut single ‘Got to Give’ was released on Cooltempo records before signing over to Acid Jazz Records where in 1990 the band released their debut single on that record label called ‘People Get Ready’ backed with ‘Gimme One Of Those’ with Jay Williamson (then known as Jay Ella Ruth) as its lead singer, when they also released the ‘Brand New Heavie’s album to critical acclaim.
Their next release in 1990, was the single ‘Dream Come True’ also featuring Jay Ella Ruth on vocals.
The band signed to a division of Chrysalis Records in the UK and American distribution was picked up by influential label Delicious Vinyl, and NDea Davenport (who had signed an artist development deal with Delicious Vinyl) joined the group.
A revamped version of the first album with vocals by N'Dea Davenport was then released in 1991 and the singles ‘Dream Come True’, ‘Never Stop’ and ‘Stay This Way’, all with Davenport on lead vocals, became hits on both sides of the Atlantic.
Upon its release, ‘Dream Come True’ achieved chart success, reaching the top 20 in the UK Singles Chart. The song’s popularity helped elevate The Brand New Heavies to a wider audience, solidifying their position as one of the leading bands in the soul and funk genres during the early 1990's.
Over the years the Brand New Heavies has been one of the most successful Acid Jazz/UK funk groups of all time and along the way has had many lead vocalists join the group including Linda Muriel, Jay Ella Ruth, N'Dea Davenport, Siedah Garrett, Carleen Anderson, Nicole Russo, Honey Larochelle, Dawn Joseph and Sulene Fleming. All but the last two have appeared on lead vocals on the group's records. The group enjoyed the most success with N'Dea Davenport in the first half of the 90's. Davenport returned to The Heavies for the ‘Get Used To It’ and "Live In London" albums, after which the latest vocalist Dawn Joseph gradually took over lead vocal duties. Joseph and the drummer and co-lead vocalist Jan Kincaid, one of the founding members, both left the group in late 2015 (and soon formed MF Robots). N'Dea re-joined the band for their 2016 tour.
The group's biggest hits include ‘Never Stop’, ‘Dream Come True’, ‘Dream On Dreamer’, ‘Midnight At The Oasis’, ‘Sometimes’, ‘You Are The Universe’, ‘You've Got A Friend’, ‘Saturday Nite’ and ‘I Don't Know Why (I Love You)’.
‘Dream Come True’ holds a special place within The Brand New Heavies’ discography, as it was one of their earliest hits and helped establish their unique sound and style. The song remains a fan favorite and is often performed during their live shows, showcasing its continued relevance and enduring popularity.
